Born in Snow Hill, Alabama in 1917, Noah Purifoy lived and worked most of his life in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, California, where he died in 2004. He received an undergraduate degree from Alabama State Teachers College in 1943 and a graduate degree from Atlanta University in 1948. In 1956, just shy of his 40th birthday, Purifoy earned a BFA degree from Chouinard, now CalArts.
His earliest body of sculpture, constructed out of charred debris from the 1965 Watts rebellion, was the basis for 66 Signs of Neon, the landmark 1966 group exhibition on the Watts riots that traveled throughout the country. As a founding director of the Watts Towers Art Center, Purifoy knew the community intimately. His 66 Signs of Neon, in line with the postwar period’s fascination with the street and its objects, constituted a Duchampian approach to the fire-molded alleys of Watts. This strategy profoundly impacted artists such as David Hammons, John Outterbridge and Senga Nengudi. For the 20 years that followed the rebellion, Purifoy dedicated himself to the found object, and to using art as a tool for social change.
In the late 1980s, after 11 years of public policy work for the California Arts Council, where Purifoy initiated programs such as Artists in Social Institutions, which brought art into the state prison system, Purifoy moved his practice out to the Mojave desert. He lived for the last 15 years of his life creating ten acres full of large-scale sculpture on the desert floor. Constructed entirely from junked materials, this otherworldly environment is one of California’s great art historical wonders.

An artist is a person who creates things. Dave does that. He's always done that, at least for the 15+ year's I've known him. It might be a Ham Radio antenna or a box of electronic circuitry that turns his Christmas lights on/off via a radio signal on the way home. Or maybe it's a simply metal bracket that hold something on the top of his car or a one of a kind piece of jewelry fashioned from silver or gold.
Dave takes pieces and parts and makes things. Cool things, beautiful things. Art.
And whatever it is, Dave always strives to do his best, to try new things, to continuously learn more, to do more.
It’s the same with photography. Dave makes cool photographs with a few pieces of camera gear (LOL), some lights, etc.

I'm experimenting with using Pages on the iPad to create artist's notes by embedding image files I've saved out of Brushes to my Saved Photos. Pages can save files as pdf. Unfortunately Flickr does not accept pdf files. So, I email the pdf file to myself and use Preview (a program that ships on all Macs) to open the pdf and Save As... a jpg file. This is the jpg file. So far I haven't figured out a way to do it all on the iPad.
Artists donated their time & talent while eager art aficionados asked question and watched as the artists made their creations at the Phoenix Comicon Sketch Offs (Wolverine, Batman, & My Little Pony) benefiting Kids Need to Read.

Artists of Mosman: 2088 showcases the creative enterprise of artists living in Mosman, and members and volunteers of the Mosman Art Gallery.
Exhibited works include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics and textiles.
The exhibition is at Mosman Art Gallery from Thursday 1 April – Sunday 25 April 2010.
These photos were taken on the walk through rice fields and a small village to Chimi Lhakhang monastery, known as the Fertility Temple, built in honour of Lama Drukpa Kunley who lived at the turn of the 16th century. He was also known as the Divine Madman or Mad Saint.
While inside the monastery, a monk blessed us with a sword and a phallus.
