A few years back the British Dragonfly Society reintroduced Downy Emerald dragonflies to Epping Forest at Wake Valley pond. The area has a lot of tree and shrub overhang providing the shade that this species loves. Now they can be found throughout the forest ponds.

This might turn out to be a wonderful bluebell season. I haven't even ventured up to our larger woodlands recently because it's been so wet. This, just a shady little spot near a churchyard.

You've got work to do my spotty little friend. The cherry tree leaves need clearing of little black bugs...(which to his credit is where I found him).

Glorious colours and a definite style! This vibrantly dressed woman was taking a break in the city. Even her flowers seemed to match her outfit.

The picture shows a side view of the recently restored (2010) North-East gate of the Castle of Chinchilla de Montearagón (XV Century), with the drawbridge over the imposing moat. This gate was destroyed in 1810 during the Spanish War of Independence, as a result of the works to increase the defensive power of the fortress against French Napoleonic troops. The other southwest gate remained as the only access since then.

The 2023 Bluebell Show is warming up. Somebody told me today that we should be in for a treat due to the cold winter and recent rain.

Soft focus and diffuse glow in Affinity Photo. An experiment you might say...

As a child I recall seeing a painting of a wheatfield painted just before a storm. The leaden sky hung in the background a perfect colour contrast to the colour of the ripened grain. That image rather stuck with me and the composition (half and half) has always appealed - you will see a fair amount of it in my photostream. Van Gogh's wheatfield with crows is another (for me) riveting image. Perhaps I should go in search of crows this summer? I liked the telegraph pole in this one... a contrast to the natural world.

Following on from the smew pair, here is one of the very handsome drake looking calmer. I do this these are my favourite duck/sawbill. Stunning birds - Mergus abellus

So many amazing formations by the Red Arrows!

Amongst our large wisteria new shoots have been waiting their turn to shine (this one approximately 3 cm long). Captured in the light of a summer’s evening.

A glimpse of a popular courtyard near the historic center of Sciacca, in via S. Nicolo'. Two women and perhaps a little boy, sitting on white plastic chairs, chatting to each other trying to enjoy the shade inside the courtyard on a hot early summer afternoon. Scenes that are usual in courtyards, where the aggregation between the families who live inside is always alive.

Path winding through the bluebell carpet.

I love paths like this... it could be the middle of no-where, but actually has allotments on either side! It seems to have been allowed to overgrow a little, which suits me fine especially with the sunshine streaming through :-).

Have a great week everyone!

With my grateful thanks to Keith Todd toddkeith533 for ID.

Wintry conditions are not that common close to the protection of the south coast but this small heath is a bit of a frost pocket. Young colonising birch saplings on the heath were coated in frost on this morning in early December, simplifying the scene and I felt contrasted nicely with older trees on the edge of woodland behind.

Happy Christmas to everyone after a very strange year so wishing everyone good health too, whatever you may be able to do to celebrate. Many thanks for all of the interest, faves and comments in my work, all very much appreciated and for the sense of community and sharing this generates. Take care everyone.

And I'm being watched...

On a warm late spring day, some people sit on benches along the Thames side in Greenwich. In the background the landscape of the other side of the river, view of Island Gardens and the entrance to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel North, part of the Isle of Dogs and the skyline of Canary Wharf.

I'm on a bit of a roll with amusing animal shots... our local park has recently had the pond dredged and these wooden posts installed. The birds love them and perch in a row... they look so funny! We thought they were seagulls at first and wondered what they were doing so far inland, but they are actually black headed gulls in their winter plumage... plus an infiltrating Canada goose :D

Happy Wednesday!

A very Happy New Year to everyone... I hope it brings everything you wish for.

This one was taken in Manchester, of a walkway above one of the City streets. I've tweaked it a little (HSS!).

Thanks for looking :)

Ok, hands up I didn’t stay up til the wee hours shivering my tits off in the name of art and this isn’t a UFO.

Instead, it’s an old aviation navigation beacon (probably out of commission now that satellites are de rigeur for such things) the sky is courtesy of Luminar 4, there’s a slight difference in the resolution of the sky compared to the main image so apologies to pixel peepers everywhere.

Once again I enjoyed the bokeh of the Canon EF70-200mm lens at f/4.

Snow-plastered gritstone tors near the trig point at Kinderlow.

It was a real pea souper but the freezing fog and a tree or two can be so rewarding and distracting, especailly during the pandemic.

Ullswater Calm

A beautiful morning on Ullswater with a nice layer of mist with some really lovely colours and a very calm lake. This is just a wee bit along from the Duke of Portland Boathouse, which when I went past had a line of photographers all taking their shots of the boathouse...couldn't really blame them, a stunning morning.

I went out with my camera after dark the other night and learned how to control my camera using the phone app. Great for long exposures. It took a bit of getting used to at first - fiddly but worth it!

Macclesfield has some lights up in the town centre :-)

Thanks for looking!

Thought I'd take a break from bobcat kittens for awhile.

This was from last summer. To me, it somehow has a little bit of surreal or HDR look to it, but its just straight out of camera . Only processed from raw.

View On Black

Swift found crash-landed in the garden yesterday - I assumed heat exhaustion but later saw another swift being chased by a hobby so who knows. Drip-fed water from a syringe and watched over it for just over an hour when it was able to relaunch itself. We have them nesting in our attic so it may just have got too hot up there.
