Story telling. Passing the token to the signal box from the moving train. Bure Valley Railway...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Token_(railway_signalling)

In railway signalling, a token is a physical object which a train driver is required to have or see before entering onto a particular section of single track. The token is clearly endorsed with the names of the section to which it belongs. A token system is more commonly used for single lines because of the greater risk of collision in the event of a mistake being made by a signaller or traincrew than on double lines.

The Atlantic Ocean around Tenerife is crystal clear in some areas and so the tidal pools are a wonderful thing to explore. There is an array of fish, starfish and sometimes octopus but the most curious species is the sea hare. They are classed as a nudibranch - a marine sea snail and they feed on sea weeds which are thought to give them their colour. They can also be found around the UK I'm told.

Those who know me will guess that I had help with the identification of this beautiful slime mould. I am told by those more knowledgeable that the spores line the cavities of this elegant species and are released on the wind.

Following on from yesterday's shot of Battersea Power Station, I managed to haul myself up off the sofa again this afternoon just in time to make it for a blue hour walk along the Thames again, this time stopping off to snap off a few shots of the always-picturesque Albert Bridge.

Again shot with the combo of my Sony RX100 mkIII and the little GorillaPod tripod ...

In a contemplative mood tonight.

I managed to capture a lightning strike over Stannington, Sheffield during a thunder storm the other night.

2023 and a all to short break in the wet, wet, wet New Year weather. Much prefer the cold frosty days although the mild weather does mean the central heating isn't working overtime.

Happy New Year!!!

Not for everyone but nature doing its thing - stinkhorn covered in flies attracted by the smell of decaying flesh. The sticky coating contains the fungal spores which are then spread by the flies. Gotta love the humourist who gave this the scientific name of Phallus impudicus.

SOOC shot testing the capabilities of the new gear. Mine too come to think of it.

Early morning, the sun was low and to my left. It’s just reflecting off the boats and the storage tanks in the background. I couldn’t have manufactured anything better. The new Canon’s light gathering ability is phenomenal, in this case with minimal input from me (just ISO & WB). I might have lightened the shadow along the bottom edge, but I don’t believe I will. As it is this is my personal favourite from today’s shots.

A quick visit to Williamthorpe Ponds and Nature Reserve on my way back home following the grandkids school run. Autumn colours are now really beginning to show.

A new perspective on this curious piece of Postmodern architecture in the City, juxtaposed with the more classical forms of Mansion House and 1 Princes Street on either side.

This is a telephoto view from further away than I've usually photographed the building, which rather flattens it out and reveals the chunky wedge shape of that entire block ...

Well...a British Border Terrier in fact. But he looks the part. There was a noise some way off in the distance. It might have been a pheasant, or it might have been something else. He doesn't confide in me...

Just back from a week at #Photokina in Cologne. It was a fun but exhausting week and really nice to catch up with friends and former colleagues as well as make some great new contacts.

I managed to get an evening out shooting and headed for this view looking over the Rhine towards the Dom and Hohenzollern Bridge. I got a similar shot back in 2012 and as always during Photokina week there are no shortage of photographers with their tripods at this spot. However it is probably the iconic image of Cologne as well as a nice, relaxing place to shoot.

He also does warning barks, chasing and the "expectant look". Well my boy, if you want fresh food you can catch it yourself.

(Our garden this afternoon. SOOC shot, no crop.)

From our garden feeding station. Meanwhile I'm positioned behind a trellis. Not that I particularly needed to do that. They're commonly to be found on the patio helping themselves to Freddie's water bowl. But hey, it's spring and I've actually got the sun on my back!

Another selection from my collection of carnivorous plants. This is a pitcher plant - the pitcher on this one is twice the size of the actual plant. Should snare a few insects in the coming weeks. It looks to me like a section through a heart - perhaps that's just me.

Locally light snow overnight; unfortunately an appointment kept me away from the park until late morning, all the snow had gone! A bright and sunny late February morning, the last week of winter; spring begins next week, let's hope March brings better weather. Path from the car park wet, muddy and slippery. Heavy rain for the last two weekends and water levels are high. Fortunately we are much better off than many parts of the country who again have floods. The government must do something about this but Boris and his mates seem very reluctant to act.
