I miss snow! Fortunately, I managed to catch some snow time this winter, I went to see how far will I be able to go through the unpaved road to the nearby mountain lodge - despite some, at the moments iffy road and my completely ordinary car (but with proper winter tires!), I managed to reach the snowy top, the whole 815 meters.

This is our local museum, located at the heart of downtown Norris City. Taken with an old Instamatic camera that was broken, but I figured out a way to get it to work - use it like a pinhole camera. Plus, I loaded 35mm film into an old 126 cartridge. Did I mention the film was expired as well?
Back in the 1940's, this building used to be a movie theater. It was about a block away from a train station and two hotels - none of which are there anymore.

I won't try to pull the wool over your eyes by claiming to have read Plato, but I was reading in one of the late John Michell's articles, collected as Confessions of a Radical Traditionalist (Vermont, Dominion, 2005) that, at the end of The Republic, the soul of Ulysses is one of a number gathered together to choose their future lives. After all the lives of wealth and luxury have been taken, Ulysses finds, discarded in a corner, the life of a quiet, retiring country gentleman, which is exactly what he'd have chosen if he'd been given the pick of the bunch. Ulysses and I are of one mind on this matter, although my modest circumstances permit me to reproduce the situation of a "country gentleman" only, as it were, in microcosm. My mind's natural mode of functioning is to observe, contemplate and understand. It is possible, of course, that when I say this I am merely making excuses for my habitual sloth and procrastination. Naturally I regard my own understanding as correct, but another chap, approaching Life from a different point-of-view, might arrive at a different, erroneous, understanding. I've never had an ounce of ambition and I've never been able to understand why anyone would wish for a "career". Just having a job is bad enough. So here I am, enjoying a ruminative plug of Old Setright Waybill Ready-Rubbed, in surroundings conducive to the thinking of great thoughts.
My neighbourhood is one big construction yard, at the moment, old heating pipes are being replaced, and these road signs are, obviously, taking a pause.

We went for a brisk walk around the neighborhood on a freezing and sunny Saturday, with a plan to take a few pictures, and go home quickly. Needless to say, the plan failed spectacularly, with the track time being a few hours, and "a few pictures" transformed into the whole roll of film. The development of this bad, but beautiful, boy was...challenging. Particularly the "loading the film onto the reel" part. But I'd say it was worth it. I'm loving the contrast and the grain.

The Webb-Hay house, located in Carmi, Illinois. It is one of the old, original homes there, built in 1876 in the Italiante style. It's closed to the public right now, but there is a party room on the third floor and a pub in the basement. It used to be a bed and breakfast inn.

#smalltowninertia David at home September 2016
Early Thursday morning I had a telephone call from David, his SARA audio scanner (Fundraised via social media) had ceased working.
David was beside himself with worry.
A quick telephone call to the wonderful Sight and Sound technology later and I was relayed a way to potentially fix the problem. Juggling caring chores at home I immediately headed over to David’s home on the bus.
The SARA device is a lifeline for David. Samantha, the electronic voice that reads aloud any printed material scanned has evolved into being as important, in the absence of an actual person, a companion, a voice that cuts through David’s 100% NLP (Nil Light Perception) blindness and informs hen reading bills or a newspaper and transports and soothes when reading pages of books.
Thankfully, the fix worked and in no time I had cleaned, repaired the SARA device and once again it was working perfectly and Samantha’s voice sang out. David was overjoyed.
Afterwards, David and I took the time to make some portraits together. I’ll be returning next week to work some more upon a coming update to his story of enduring blindness, alone, in 2016.

As always, I've been walking around, and wandering through the unknown-to-me parts of the city. Also, I got a box of compact cameras in various states of decay, but some of those cameras were quite nice to use. This is one of those few.

The camera, although built in 1996 is one of those basic models, with fixed everything - the lens has no zoom, the aperture is fixed, the focus is fixed, and it relies completely on the film latitude. The Internet isn't very helpful, either, there is conflicting information, one source says it does autofocus, but I haven't seen any evidence for that claim. :D

A long timed exposure shot of star trails in my backyard. During the exposure, the camera also happened to pick up a shooting star – you can see it at the lower left edge of the frame. I positioned the camera flat on the ground, facing up, in my backyard and when I went to retrieve it and stop the exposure, it had fallen over. I don't know why it did because it's a light camera and there was no wind, maybe the family of raccoons living in my yard got nosy and tipped it over. Whatever tipped it over, I don't think I got the full three hours of exposure pointing straight up. I'd guess from the length of the star trails, the camera only pointed up for about 30-40 minutes. At least I got something for my efforts.
