Noticed the combo?

The light was really bad and the car stood so close to the wall, so I couldn't take any better shots of this lovely car. :(

(Rosana Arbelo)

Have a great week my friends !!!

Watch the videos:

- Glider start at Bern-Belp on www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWGPhghodyU

- Flying directly under the clouds on www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoTWTJyJydw

I had the possibility to join a glider flight with my friend Ivan. We started from Bern Airport (Bern-Belp, IATA: BRN, ICAO: LSZB)

We found pretty good thermals and were almost four hours in the air, an unforgettable experience!

This photo was taken over Thun/Steffisburg. On the horizon you see the Jura mountains, then bern. On the left under the wing is the Längenberg and on the right the Belpberg. Between the two hills lays the Gürbetal with lots of farm land (Check out the tags in the picture).

Gliding is a recreational activity and competitive air sport in which pilots fly unpowered aircraft known as gliders or sailplanes using naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to remain airborne. The word soaring is also used for the sport.

Gliding as a sport began in the 1920s. Initially the objective was to increase the duration of flights but soon pilots attempted cross-country flights away from the place of launch. Improvements in aerodynamics and in the understanding of weather phenomena have allowed greater distances at higher average speeds. Long distances are now flown using any of the main sources of rising air: ridge lift, thermals and lee waves. When conditions are favorable, experienced pilots can now fly hundreds of kilometres before returning to their home airfields; occasionally flights of more than 1,000 kilometres (621 mi) are achieved.

Some competitive pilots fly in races around pre-defined courses. These gliding competitions test pilots' abilities to make best use of local weather conditions as well as their flying skills. Local and national competitions are organized in many countries, and there are biennial World Gliding Championships. Techniques to maximize a glider's speed around the day's task in a competition have been developed, including the optimum speed to fly, navigation using GPS and the carrying of water ballast. If the weather deteriorates pilots are sometimes unable to complete a cross-country flight. Consequently they may need to land elsewhere, perhaps in a field, but motorglider pilots can avoid this by starting an engine.

Powered-aircraft and winches are the two most common means of launching gliders. These and other launch methods require assistance and facilities such as airfields, tugs, and winches. These are usually provided by gliding clubs who also train new pilots and maintain high safety standards. Although in most countries the standards of safety of the pilots and the aircraft are the responsibility of governmental bodies, the clubs and sometimes national gliding associations often have delegated authority.

The sport is facing challenges to maintain its popularity. Many factors have put pressure on the movement such as the increasing demands on people's time, cost of insurance and fuel, competition from other air sports and the growing requirement for land and controlled airspace.

Thermals are streams of rising air that are formed on the ground through the warming of the surface by sunlight. If the air contains enough moisture, the water will condense from the rising air and form cumulus clouds. When the air has little moisture or when an inversion stops the warm air from rising high enough for the moisture to condense, thermals do not create cumulus clouds. Without clouds or dust devils to mark the thermals, thermals are not always associated with any feature on the ground. The pilot must then use both skill and luck to find them using a sensitive vertical speed indicator called a variometer that quickly indicates climbs and descents. Occasionally reliable thermals can be found in the exhaust gases from power stations or from fires.

Once a thermal is encountered, the pilot can fly in tight circles to keep the glider within the thermal, so gaining altitude before flying towards the destination or to the next thermal. This is known as "thermalling". Alternatively, glider pilots on cross-country flights may choose to 'dolphin'. This is when the pilot merely slows down in rising air, and then speeds up again in the non-rising air, thus following an undulating flight path. Dolphining allows the pilot to minimize the loss of height over great distances without spending time turning. Climb rates depend on conditions, but rates of several meters per second are common and can be maximized by gliders equipped with flaps. Thermals can also be formed in a line usually because of the wind or the terrain, creating cloud streets. These can allow the pilot to fly straight while climbing in continuous lift.

As it requires rising heated air, thermalling is most effective in mid-latitudes from spring through late summer. During winter the sun's heat can only create weak thermals, but ridge and wave lift can still be used during this period.

Meet my F.R.I.E.N.D. Lunara Mendes

Lunara and I worked together for about two years, and it had been a while since I last saw her . We did her photoshoot on a sweet sunday morning, at her house, where I got to meet her family, and where we shared great laughs and listened to our favorite pop songs.

Today I have gone in the mountains, Dolomites, Nuvolau peak. A great

trekking, but although I was alone, I have met by chance the most beautiful clouds I could think of. Even if I cannot touch them, they are always good company to the skies in my life.

PS: A moment of relax is self-portraited below... :D

Spotted this field from my house and headed over to grab some shots, basically to see if it was viable for a sunset session. Then that evening it clouded over and the sunset was rubbish. So I didn't get over there in time. Seeing as the bales aren't covered the farmer has probably already collected them. Anyway I'm quite pleased with the daytime shot, the sky was pretty awesome that afternoon. Opinion and criticism would be appreciated, thanks :)

Vigevano (Pv) - Girando in bicicletta nella campagna vigevanese, prima del temporale, uno scatto e poi ...... via a casa (Luglio 2011).

Not been out with the camera far too windy, this is one of the pink series, a few more being saved for a rainy day LOL, I know I'll not get a shot like this for another year, I'll have to wait for the Rhododendrons to flower again, hoping that I'll start seeing more Common Darters soon, seems a long wait :)

This male Terrier Mix is new at a small farm where I visit often. They have a GSD mix, Border Collie and Australian Shepherd also. The larger dogs get to run free and help with the farm duties but this little guy was tethered to his dog house. I guess they're worried about him getting run over. Looking a bit lonely and bored, he was happy to pose for my camera.

I'm thinking this could become very addictive. After receiving an alert on my phone and finding the kp had shot up to 8 (very high chance of aurora in the UK) I scoured the weather looking for somewhere to escape the thick cloud over Aberdeen. This was taken between Portknockie and Findochty on the Moray coastline, Northern Scotland. Most of the night there appeared to be only an arc but at this point we could see rays shooting upwards. It was difficult to visualise well with the naked eye due to the sun not being far below the horizon, and the cloud cover was a bit excessive most of the night but overall definitely worth the trip.

Just like August of last year, the Pacific Northwesterners are going to miss the northern lights again tonight. Damn this PNW weather!

The photo above was taken during our last night at Clear Lake. I was getting ready to crash inside the tent when I thought of going back to the fire pit to warm up a little. I'm sure glad I did.

Am back again after another short break, another work trip and therefore no time for my camera :(

I have had a lot of transit time to think about new experiments and I've decided to work on them in the next couple of days so hopefully, you will see something fresh and new from me soon. In the meanwhile, here is another one of my earlier images, treated in a different manner.

This is like old wine in a new bottle but am not sure this is going to rock anybody's world. Thanks for looking up!

I'll visit your streams today and check your work out. Have a good day my dear friends!

Photographer Richard Tilbrook captured a fine array of pedestrians in this shot - "ordinary" women; a nun; a schoolboy; a window cleaner; and a cyclist. Also in evidence is the haphazard parking down the middle of O'Connell Street that would give a modern traffic warden pause for thought.

I've been in kind of a colorful mood lately.

There's been some beautiful light out there on the streets.

You'd never catch me shooting in color after the sun sets...

But when I ran into this woman I ran into a polytonic explosion!

The shadows were growing long and it was gettin' to be the 'golden hour.'

She was a lot of fun to shoot...

And her personality was as warm and as colorful as her self.

When I first bumped into her I was shooting in black and white...

She asked to see the picture and before she finshed objecting to the mono magic I had switched that sweet D300 to the technicolor mode and I shot her as we talked.

It's been the most amazing summer I can remember in a long time.

Nothin' but love and light.

When you're walking on sunshine the world can see that.

The 'light seeks the light.'

I hope you've enjoyed your summer so far.

It's movin' fast.

Faces on the street

35mm 1.8 cropped square and contrast and expo danced around until those reflections in her glasses looked magical.

I'm back from Kauai with as many good photos as I've made in all of my previous trips to Hawaii combined, but with no huge winter waves of course. I really lucked out with the light I think. So here is a good place to start. The start of the day in Hanalai.

The clouds were heavy before sunrise but they cleared out just enough to allow the sun to light up the 4,000 ft. mountain range behind the beach. Without that light, the scene did not have the punch and depth that is does in this photo. Summer is when the light strikes across the mountains at the best angle.

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

Okay. Okay. So I'm really happy with the turnout of this photo! Your comments, favorites, and feedback would be really helpful!

VIEW ON LIGHT BOX PLEASE!

So many thanks to Christine Watson, and David Pollinger for helping me! They were my models for this photo!

Christine dove not once, but twice into a muddy creek, not knowing what was lurking in the depths so that her hair and dress would appear wet and tattered looking. We all had mud over our feet and up our legs, because of a heavy rain storm we had the day before.

David is my other model, and arguably the star of this photo. He's those creatures, or beings covered in cheesecloth. Cheesecloth does not smell like cheese, but when covered in rank, smelly,creek-water-mud...it smells...A LOT. He let me cover him in the wet, disgusting muddy fabric and moved from spot to spot for a good hour while I took various shots.

Also thanks to Norm and his girlfriend Cara. Norm was our designated Frog wrangler. There were HUNDREDS of little baby frogs around us. I fear that I may have stepped on one before I noticed them all... Cara helped blow orange powder paint in the air, but I didn't end up using it in the photo. :(

This is my entry for Brooke Shaden's contest. :)

It's a surreal/conceptual look on Alice in Wonderland. I really hope that you all enjoy this.

Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater)

Location: East Java, Indonesia

Coordinates: 8.058°S 114.242°E

Elevation: 2,799 m (9,183 ft)

Type: Stratovolcano

Last eruption: 1999

Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater) is a nature reserve Ijen Park is located between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso District, East Java, Indonesia. This crater exactly located at the top of Mount Ijen which is one of a series of volcanoes in East Java such as Raung, Bromo, Semeru and Merapi.

This beautiful warm crater lake with its blue-greenish water look very inviting but it corrosive and dangerous! Kawah Ijen is the world's largest highly acidic volcanic lake. The crater size is about 960 meters x 600 meters with a depth of 200 meters is so acidic that it can dissolve clothes and human flesh. The acid measure is almost zero (pH<0.5) about similar to the strength of car battery acid.

With the elevation 2,799 m (9,183 ft), cold air with temperatures 10° Celsius, the temperature might reach 2° Celsius will increase the sensation of its own experience. Various plants that exist only in the highlands can also be found here, such as Edelweis Flowers and Pine.

The best time to start hiking to Kawah Ijen is early morning. From either Arabica or Catimore homestay, takes for about 30 minutes driving to Paltuding Starting Point. Enthusiast hikers even leave the homestay at 4 am or earlier, so they can reach the crater on time for sunrise.

From the parking lot, a well-worn 3km track leads us up to the volcano rim. At first, heading up through the shady casuarinas forest, the track is wide and flat but it is just the beginning and gradually it rises up with some steep sections. After about 2 km walking, there is a shelter up there, Pondok (shelter) – the post to weigh the miner’s sulfur load where they can get a promissory note to exchange it later with cash money at the base camp.

Just about 1 km from pondok, the trail thankfully flattened out all the way to the crater’s rim as we are welcomed by smelling sulfur fumes. From the edge, we need to climb another 300meters down a narrow steep path to the lakeside to get the best pictures.

As alternative, the panoramic view can be seen obviously just hike up for about 1km to the northern-east of the crater and follow the track, a breathtaking view of stunning turquoise lake brings us to this magnificent.
