Cool story about this shot

I already told you about Richard Wilson's *sculpture* "Slice of Reality" (from the year 2000), 15% of an old dredger, the other 85% is cut off. I'm a big fan of this location since I 'discovered it' back in 2010.

The funny thing is when I'm in London and I ask someone about this piece of pop-art, nobody knows of its existence. Anyway, it was on my wishlist to visit it at friday night together with Scott Wilson. I googled the Thames tides table, so I knew we would have low tide over there between 8 and 11 o' clock in the evening.

So after doing our bankside and Tower Bridge tour I suggested to take the tube to North Greenwich (O2) and so we did. To get down to the Thames it's a short walk from the O2, and when we descended towards the muddy area alongside the river Scott immediately recognized the photographic possibilites of this awesome place, yelling: "Now this is hardcore photography!" Hehe, and it sure was - especially after doing the 'tourist thing' on the Tower Bridge, LOL.

It's a fantastic place for long exposure stuff, huge clouds (and airplanes) rapidly passing by plus the pretty lights of Canary Wharf. All this, together with that huge, quite absurd sliced ship made it all quite surreal!

So there we were waving about with torches to lit up the intestines of the ship, slipping and sliding over the muddy banks of the Thames, sinking deep here and there, splashing away, while trying to keep an eye on each other not to end up in our shots all the time (we both were working with ULTRA wide angles, hehe). We were having a ball!

Actually, I was so enchanted by the whole 'moment' of being there, in a foreign country, in another metropole, at such a stunning photographic location under such excellent conditions, together with Scott who I only just met in the afternoon... it was mindblowing. I was so perplexed I only took about 25 shots in 2 to 3 hours or something.

Get back! oh wait...

In fact we were so excited we didn't even realize the water came back so fast! The difference between low and high tide in the Thames is about 7 meters (21 ft.) and we we're doing perfectly alright close to the 'Slice of Reality', but we didn't realize the water already got back around the corner, where we entered the area! Thank goodness there were still a few (slippery) rocks along the embankment sticking out above the water which we used to make it back to where we came from. If it wasn't for Scott helping me out with my gear I'd probably be stuck there, waiting for a helicopter! LOL

Whatever, even if we should have waded out of that place it still would be the pinnacle of our London meet-up, I'm sure Scott would agree. I hope you all enjoy the shot(s)!

Another photo from that amazing late afternoon / early evening nature walk last Sunday; it was perfect outside, one of the nicest weather days we have had so far!

Beautiful warm breeze, sun shining down and illuminating everything with a golden glow, trees standing tall, watching over the meltwater streams flowing by, and the river just beyond...really a wonderful time for a walk!

The amazing light was due to the fact that it was late afternoon, getting into evening, and the sun was just beginning to set!

Here we have two creatures that can see in the dark. Demetrius the cat, and the D800. Dark is an understatement. We're talking f/1.4, 85mm @ 1/30th sec, and ISO 25,600. What's more impressive than the low-light handling is the fact the AF locked on with absolutely no problems.

Versus the D700, when downsampled to match, I'd say the D800 is around 1-1/2 stops better. If I nail the exposure, I would definitely feel comfortable with a 25,600 image at 5x7... *maybe* 8x10 if the stars were aligned. I'd say I felt this way about the D700 at ~ISO 8000.

But, that's relative. I say that about the D700, but in practice I would *never* go above 6400 because of the loss of detail. Noise I can deal with, but the problem is that images start to look soft on the D700 when that high. I mean, check out the whiskers in this shot! I'd say it's easily TWO full stops more usable... if not 2-1/3rd.

I'm still rather unsure about this photo. I played around with it for a couple of hours but wasn't happy, so I tried out adding some textures which is something I've not properly done before in post processing. Hopefully it works but I'd love feedback, positive or negative!

I thought up this image the other day, originally after going to see "The Raven" at the cinema - a rather dark film but this ideas took a lot of twists and turns since! It originally came from the idea of escaping after being buried under the ground, and I planned to make it seem more raw at first. Today, however, was a beautiful sunny day. For most of the afternoon I lay in my garden reading, and all I heard was birdsong, and I was more in the mood for creating an image showing my character at peace.

Hopefully that made some sort of sense and, for those of you in the UK, enjoy this beautiful weather whilst it lasts! :)

The area I have photographed here is another very neat part of Fish Creek in the spring...all the melted snow and ice from the winter gathers here, where the land is filled with little valleys and rises, and creates beautiful meltwater canals that birds love to gather in and the local beavers love to build dams on!

Here is an example of a beaver dam (one gets built on this spot every year), surrounded by fiery burnt umber grasses and reeds and majestic trees on the horizon.

It was a very nice evening for a walk, and for photos!

Joy for Me Again Monday

Literally jumping for it! Today was a great day. We did a Flickr Meetup / Photobooth SF photo walk with instant cameras around the Mission today and had lot's of fun and made new friends. I have a nice set from it coming up once I get them scanned.

Then we had a yummy lunch followed by a walk on Golden Gate bridge. The weather was perfect for it too. Shot this on the way back to the car and I was jumping up on down on this tree stump when Robin said 'careful you don't fall down the cliff there' and of course my childlike happiness and fearlessness left me that instant *_*...but nothing can beat that view...

Valuable for ToTW

I treasure the joy photography brings me and also the wonderful inspirational place I live in

^_^

If you arrange a beauty contest among the destination of Bangladesh, Shusong Durgapur of Birishiri will surely get the prize of the most photogenic natural look of all. Its scenic beauty is very unique. The main attraction of Birishiri is the ceramic hill of Durgapur and the picturesque landscape along the Shomeshwari River. Except the rainy season it’s hard to find any water in the river and that’s why the river changes its landscape color with the seasons. There is also an ethnic museum at Birishiri. It’s a must place to visit while you are in Birishiri.

Up in the northeast, we are having some beautiful days with temperatures in the mid 70s and on the first day of Spring, who could ask for anything more than beautiful weather? Update

Explore #9 (FWIW) that's what you get with the old cliches! ;-)

Btw, I delete comments with *huge* banners and reference to people's own pix. So now you know. Ta! :-)

About this shot

I was deffo in two minds about uploading (one of) the ultimate cliche shot(s) of Westminster Bridge and The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace (whatever) you know - hehe. *blush* But I walked past the London Eye and couldn't help myself looking back over my left shoulder... I had to take the shot anyway! It was a perfect job for my Nikon 50mm f/1.4 from that angle, and oh boy that piece of glass is *SO* sharp it scares me (see 100% crop below).

Hope you like it - at least the sharpness of it all - althought it's been done to death a thousand times. I'll come up with some more original shots soon enough! ... oh wait, I've got a couple of other cliches waiting down the line as well, hehe. I'll try and make it an interesting mixture then! ;-)

See ya!

I chased down a rainbow yesterday morning, first by car and then on foot, and it took me to this fence I've been wanting to photograph for years.

This really works better larger. I don't ask this often, but please consider hitting L or clicking on the photo so you can see the raindrops and the depth of the background better.

Happy Fence Friday!

I wasn't overly happy with the white balance and the way the city kind of looks "Smudgy" in this shot.. I tried so many different settings but as I am still learning so much I honestly think it was because of the lens I was using. So when I get the time I'll return here with another lens to try it out. Other then that, I liked the rainbow reflections. :)

March & even into April is going to be a VERY busy few weeks for me so I'm trying to keep up as much as possible. My daughter and I are going to be apart of a wedding party in two weeks so I'm looking forward to seeing my little princess dressed up as a flower girl! I'll be sure to get lots of pictures then haha!

This is what I have been feeling the last days.. I just want to pack myself up and go somewhere far far away. Sometimes I am wondering what I'm still doing here, when there is so much to experience out in the world. I'm tired of living in a nutshell. I'm tired of this place..
