Early morning symmetry over another flawless backcountry lake, Kings Canyon National Park.
First things first; yes, the water really is that color. Some of the lakes in this area do have that gemlike look, making them even more beautiful. I’m not sure why, but I’m quite curious! The breeze was beginning to pick up, creating small ripples in the water – I had to wait for a few brief moments of calm to get this shot.
Taken in the middle of a 19-day, 275-mile backpacking trip last summer. Good times. :)
My tent shared this vantage point – can you say waterfront property?
note: sorry about my weeklong disappearance from the flickr world -- lame excuse, I know, but I've been busy beyond belief with midterms and projects. I will stop by your streams and try to catch up ASAP! As always, thoughtful feedback is highly appreciated.

In winter, Amsterdammers watch the falling thermometer readings with the same focus as people in Aspen and Chamonix. When the temperature drops low enough for long enough, the lakes and the canals become sparkling highways for the skaters. Little kiosks are set up on the ice to dispense heart-warming liqueurs. I really love this part of our culture. Almost everyone, young or old, likes to skate and is smiling and friendly. We already have one week of ice and wednesday 8 Februari I took a day off to skate on natural ice. According to Richard van Ammerzoden, a skater from Rotterdam, skating in Holland originated as a poor man's sport. Isolated by mud and water in the damp winters, rural farmers prayed for ice. When it came, just like Hans Brinker, they strapped on their wooden skates with leather thongs, and traveled great distances to visit friends and relatives they hadn't seen in months. Then they skated home. Perhaps that explains the origin of the Elfstedentocht or "Eleven Cities Tour", a 200-kilometer mega-tour in the province of Friesland known as "the mother of all skating tours." In the 1890s, some Frisian farmer with well-developed leg muscles tried to skate through all eleven cities of Friesland in a single day. He succeeded, and the rest is history.
Photo taken in Holysloot at the Holysloter Die nearby Amsterdam. Father and son skating from pittoreske village to pittoreske village having a skate-break at "Koek en Zopie". A little kiosk which is set up on the ice to dispense heart-warming liqueurs and warm soup. I really love this part of our culture. Almost everyone, young or old, likes to skate and is smiling and friendly. Dutch skaters enjoying the natural ice. Today I enjoy the natural ice too. I did skate a tour from Amsterdam - Zunderdorp - Ransdorp - Holysloot - Uitdam - Zuiderwoude - Monnickendam - Broek in Waterland -Zunderdorp and back to Amsterdam - about 40km. This photo I took on my way home to Ransdorp.

Mont Blanc (French) or Monte Bianco (Italian), meaning "White Mountain", is the highest mountain in the Alps, Western Europe and the European Union. It rises 4,810.45 m (15,782 ft)[2] above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence. It is also sometimes known as La Dame blanche (French for "the White Lady") or Il Bianco (Italian for "the White One").
The mountain lies between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Haute-Savoie, France and the location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the Arve Valley in France.
The two most famous towns near Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy, and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France—the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain from Courmayeur to Chamonix.
Begun in 1957 and completed in 1965, the 11.6 km (7¼ mi) Mont Blanc Tunnel runs beneath the mountain between these two countries and is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes.
The Mont Blanc massif is popular for mountaineering, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.
The summit of Mont Blanc is a thick, perennial ice and snow dome whose thickness varies, so no exact and permanent summit elevation can be determined. But accurate measurements have been made. For a long time its official elevation was 4,807 m (15,771 ft). Then in 2002, the IGN and expert surveyors, with the aid of GPS technology, measured it to be 4,810.40 m (15,782 ft 2 in).

Courmayeur is an Italian town and comune in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley, in northern Italy. It is located at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in western Europe, in the Graian Alps range, and is crossed by the Dora Baltea. Courmayeur shares the summit of Mont Blanc with its neighboring commune of Chamonix in France, and owns the title of highest commune in Italy.

This is probably the weirdest fence I've ever posted! First I had a snowstorm fence, then I had a picnic in the park fence, then I had a beach fence. But as I was looking through my archives, I came across a 'heart' fence. This being the month of love and all, I immediately yanked it from the archives and dusted it off (I know, it looks like a missed a few spots)!
Seriously folks; this looks NOTHING like the original! I took a beautiful, pristine digital image and systematically destroyed it. And it was so much fun! I really shouldn't be doing this, I have SO MUCH to do before I start my road trip next week. Been up since 3:00 am getting Jack off on her flight to San Diego. So what I'm really doing right now is procrastinating. And when I procrastinate, you can usually find me in Photoshop ... or on Flickr! I decided to 'do something different.' I ran the image through a plugin called Retrographer. It does a whole bunch of fun neat retro camera effects!! I like how this looks like a rumpled Valentine's Day card found in a musty box in the basement.
Happy Fence Friday Everyone!!
A wonderful weekend to you all! I hope you have the opportunity to hand around like these three guys.
I've been back from vietnam for more than a months - I didn't touch my camera ever since. This morning I had the feeling to grap it for the first time after the trip. It's itching again even though it is insanely cold around here. I can't wait to work on something new during the next weeks.

Brand spanking new, and a snip at £360 - this is the Vulcan Demonstration Van. Its chassis could take 20-25 cwt., and it was distributed by B.T. Lambert Ltd., 3 Cornmarket, Dublin.
From examining shots of the van from other angles, what we thought was the reg. no. seemed to be 0010 YI (definitely YI, but 0010 didn't sound right). Thanks to Bob Montgomery 2012 who explained that it was a trade plate rather than a registration plate...
I've transcribed the full text from the carving over the door of Reginald's Tower behind the van below...

Beautiful Lucky! I love when he is still long enough for me to get a shot like this one so everyone can see how beautiful he is. Like seriously look at those eyes and stripes and whiskers. He works hard every day shining himself - sometimes interupting other tasks to tackle a leg or a toe - and not to mention getting plenty of beauty sleep inbetween too.
Sure 'tis a tough life

The island drifts amongst the snow-capped mountains surrounding the Lake Maggiore.
Isola Bella, meaning "Beautiful Island", really does live up to its name. It is one of the Borromean Islands (Isole Borromee) of the Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. Until the beginning of 1600s, the island was a small rocky cliff occupied by a tiny fishing village. In 1632 Carlo III of the influential House of Borromeo began the construction of a palazzo with luxuriant baroque gardens dedicated to his wife Isabella, from whom the island takes its name.

I yearned for snow, it came ... briefly ... and now my thoughts are drifting along to good times & warmer climes. It is such a dull, gray day today that I needed something warm to light up my day. Hope it warms up your day too! Isn't a sunset on the beach so cliché ?

Rhodes(Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos, IPA: [ˈro̞ðo̞s]; Italian: Rodi; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes) is a Greek island approximately 18 kilometers (11 mi) southwest of Turkey in eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, with a population of 117,007[2] of which 53,709 resided in the homonymous capital city of the island.
Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today Rhodes is a tourist destination.
The island of Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead, 79.7 km (49.5 mi) long and 38 km (24 mi) wide, with a total area of approximately 1,400 square kilometers (541 sq mi) and a coastline of approximately 220 km (137 mi). The city of Rhodes is located at the northern tip of the island, as well as the site of the ancient and modern commercial harbors.
In the 1st century AD, the Emperor Tiberius spent a brief term of exile on Rhodes, and Saint Paul brought Christianity to the island. Rhodes reached her zenith in the third century, and was then by common consent the most civilized and beautiful city in Hellas. In 395, the long Byzantine Empire period began for Rhodes, when the Roman Empire was split and the eastern half gradually became a Greek empire. Although part of Byzantium for the next thousand years, Rhodes was nevertheless repeatedly attacked by various forces. It was first occupied by Muslim forces of Muawiyah I in 672. Much later, Rhodes was retrieved for the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus during the First Crusade.
In 1309 the Byzantine era came to an end when the island was occupied by forces of the Knights Hospitaller. Under the rule of the newly named "Knights of Rhodes", the city was rebuilt into a model of the European medieval ideal. Many of the city's famous monuments, including the Palace of the Grand Master, were built during this period.
The strong walls which the Knights had built withstood the attacks of the Sultan of Egypt in 1444, and of Mehmed II in 1480. Ultimately, however, Rhodes fell to the large army of Suleiman the Magnificent in December 1522, long after the rest of the Byzantine empire had been lost. The few surviving Knights were permitted to retire to the Kingdom of Sicily. The Knights would later move their base of operations to Malta. The island was thereafter a possession of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries.
Exam next Friday. Potentially going camping afterwards so I should get some more interesting shots there I assume! I have 1-2 more photos to upload from this day at the beach. I'll get around to that sooner or later.
My first explore! Woohoo! Thank you to all my lovely contacts! Kind of fitting that my 100th upload is my first explore, no? Please feel free to browse through some of my other beach work!
On another note, I hope you're all well. Thanks for your kind comments all.
Take care,
Ben

While on a photowalk around Westminster with Siany, we walk around the back of Westminster Abbey and she found this little entrance. We wandered in and found this fantastic little cloister and many other churchy-type things. We also found the oldest door in England, dating back to around 1050.
The interior of this, I believe it's called a chapter house, is modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. I loved the sense of perspective that this corridor gave, plus the wonderful ceiling and the bright sunlight shining in through the cloister windows.
This looks much more lovely large on black. I've also just realised that my Flickr stream has just passed over a million views, so thank you everyone who as visited and continues to visit my photos!
