The current church building dates from the late medieval era; construction of the main area of the church began in about 1267 and was completed in 1340. The successional building kept the guidelines of the floor plan of the original Willigis building and with it the design as a double quire church. St. Stephan is the oldest Gothic hall church in the Upper Rhine district, and is (besides Mainz Cathedral) the most important church in the city of Mainz.

Only a few changes have been made to the church since the 14th century. The cloister, for instance, was added between 1462 and 1499 to the southern side of the church, and the outer face of the church was updated during the Baroque period. In 1857 a great explosion in a nearby powder magazine (Mainz was a federal fortress in the 19th century) destroyed the baroque facing of the church.

St. Stephan was heavily damaged in the cause of the bombing of Mainz in World War II. The cloister was heavily damaged and was rebuilt between 1968 and 1971; the restoration of the huge western belfry was also completed at that time, albeit with some difficulty. The arches over the nave and the quire could not be saved and have been replaced by a flat wooden ceiling.

The church features a Gothic hall with a triple nave and quires at both the west and east ends. A large octagonal bell tower rises above the western quire. (Wikipedia)

Houses in Percé, Gaspésie, Canada, just before sunset. Sometimes we can get heavy snow and still see the grass because of the strong winds that push the snow into the ocean or somewhere else. Is spring late this year? :)

"The Queen's Walk" is casually referred to as the South Bank Walk located on the South Bank of the River Thames in London, England.

The Queen's Walk, London

This is quite an interesting story, so before you decide you want to be a queen here is a note of caution....

Mary Stuart, known to history as Mary, Queen of Scots, was one of the most fascinating and controversial monarchs of 16th century Europe. At one time, she claimed the crowns of four nations - Scotland, France, England and Ireland. Her physical beauty and kind heart were acknowledged even by her enemies, yet she lacked the political skills to rule successfully in Scotland. Her second marriage was unpopular and ended in murder and scandal; her third was even less popular and ended in forced abdication in favor of her infant son. She fled to England in 1568, hoping for the help of her cousin, Elizabeth I. Her presence was dangerous for the English queen, who feared Catholic plotting on Mary's behalf. Mary never met her cousin and remained imprisoned for the next nineteen years. She was executed in 1587, only forty-four years old. By orders of the English government, all of her possessions were burned. In 1603, upon Elizabeth's death, Mary's son became king of England as James I.

There is a bit of mystery about the origin or the statue and naming of this property in Fleet Street London.. Best i can make out is that It appears that the building dates back to 1905. A nearby pub sign says "the building next door, Mary Queen of Scots House was built in 1905. The statue of Mary Stuart a romantic idea of the developer Sir John Tollemache MP, who was a great admirer of Mary Q of S." In addition, the building was designed for a Scottish Insurance Company

A rare bird for Florida. Franklin's Gulls are very similar to Laughing Gulls. They are slightly smaller, with a smaller bill, larger white eye arcs and a darker, more extensive hood in winter.

Some friends and I spent several hours picking through a couple thousand Laughing Gulls at a few different locations in the Daytona Beach area one day this fall. We finally found what we were looking for right before sunset. This is a first cycle (first winter) bird as shown by the brown feathers in the wing.

Last evening's shot of the Andromeda Galaxy. The image is a composite of 15 one-minute exposures at ISO 3200 and setting the f-stop back one setting to f/6.3 from the default 5.6. Seems to have made a difference in the details. Too bad the moon was rising, it was a perfect night for imaging. Temperatures stayed above the dew point during the entire session.
