... the Dance of the Fools
or Awa Odori takes place during the Buddhist observance of O-bon, when the spirits of the dead are thought to return to their ancestral homes.
Way back 1587 when feudal overlord decided to give a party to celebrate the completion of his new castle. The drunken guests began to dance way to the castle. Once they had recovered from their hangovers it was decided to make it an annual event.
It is also said that AWA ODORI may have been the so called elegant dances performed by Gaisha from Kyoto to entertain the upper class samurais'
It is clear that the dance has been around for more than 400 years. With both arms in the air, steps follow the rhythm of the music. The ensemble consists of shamisen (a musical instrument similar to a guitar), drums, wooden flutes and gongs. Although there are no set moves to awa odori, dances by famous ren groups are very graceful.

The folly of man! In late May this year, an oil drilling project cracked open a natural gas-rich water lode at a depth of around 6,000 feet (1,800 metres) inundating about 200 hectares of highly urban Sidoarjo with at least 10 feet of noxius mud high in fluoride and laced with sulphur. About 8,000 people have to be evacuated as factories, rice paddies, homes and a major toll highway were swallowed by hot flowing earth. Today, culverts that were placed to make the road usable are just about to be flooded again.

Longueur totale : 85 cm. Envergure des ailes : 50 cm. Poids adulte : 850 g
Distribution : Amérique centrale et du Sud: du Panama au nord du Paraguay.
Ils sont encore assez commun dans certaines régions : forêts tropicales, savanes, zones découvertes, marais et abords de l'eau. Ils nichent dans des trous de palmiers secs.
Ils vivent toujours en couple ou en bande. Les couples restent formés à l'intérieur des bandes, même en vol. Le mâle est dominant. Il peut se montrer extrêmement protecteur et donc agressif pendant la reproduction. L'Ara Ararauna est un perroquet monogame, très fidèle. Lorsque le couple s'est formé, il demeure très uni jusqu'à ce qu'un des deux disparaisse. Ils passent leur temps à se becqueter comme pour témoigner de leur affection l'un envers l'autre.
Ils sont granivores, herbivores et frugivores. L' Ara n'a pas d'odorat. Il est gaucher ou droitier. Pour manger, il développe une préférence pour l'une ou l'autre de ses pattes.
Ce sont des oiseaux très affectueux et très intelligents qui apprennent extraordinairement bien à imiter et à parler.
L' Ara n'a pas beaucoup de prédateurs mis à part quelques félins et rapaces diurnes (Aigle huppé, Harpie féroce, Spizaète orné) mais son principal ennemi est sans aucun doute l'homme qui détruit la forêt tropicale.
L'exportation du perroquet est illégale. Pour chaque Ara exporté qui arrive vivant, cinq vont mourir.

Distribution: Central America and South America: from Panama to the north of Paraguay. They are still rather common in certain areas: tropical forests, savannas, discovered zones, marsh and accesses of water. They nest in holes of dry palm trees.
They always live in couple or band. The couples remain formed inside the bands, even in flight. The male is dominating. It can thus be shown extremely protective and aggressive during the reproduction. The Macaw Ararauna is a parrot monogamist, very faithful. When the couple is formed, it remains very plain until one of both disappears. They spend their time caress each other with the beak to testify their affection one towards the other.
They are granivorous, herbivorous and frugivorous. The Macaw does not have sense of smell. It is left-handed or right-handed . To eat, it develops a preference for one or the other of its legs.
They are very affectionate and very intelligent birds wich learn extraordinarily well how to imitate and how to speak.
The Macaw has not many predatory besides some cat-like and diurnal raptors (crested Eagle, wild Harpy, decorated Spizaète) but its principal enemy is without any doubt the man who destroys the tropical forest.
The export of the parrot is illegal. For each exported Macaw which arrives alive, five will die.

This is a long exposure taken on the beach at Ke'ei in South Kona last night.
I'm not sure I should even upload this, but hey, if I have to look at it, then so do you! LOL! As you can see the colors are very strange, and unlike some shots, I did not fiddle with the color at all in post -- this is as the camera saw it, other than some levels adjustments. Once again the GND filter somehow has exaggerated what at the time seemed like a very subtle sky color after sunset.
When I left the beach, I thought I might have some great shots, but once I looked at them on the computer, I just had to laugh!
I disgust even myself. Ugh. And no, I don't really look (or act) like this (as far as you know)
Maybe I should call these "Lessons in how to be unattractive"
Even as the storm was coming in he continued with his fishing.
I was lucky as I broke into a run after taking this shot and managed to prevent my precious camera and equipment from getting drenched. Hope he managed some shelter too.

Sometime ago I wished that I can capture a traditional candlelight procession in an old town, viewing the ocean of illuminated faithful on top of a balcony of a century old house. The building across mine must be as old, spewing out rustic details of days of the past. The spot had be at the corner so that the candles will be a stream of curving flickring lines. Thanks to rox?, the dream became a reality last Good Friday.

Freshly caught- that was what they were. Sitangkai is in the basin of the Sulu Sea teeming with marine life. Being Muslim, the people of Tawi-Tawi rely on fish for protein. Beef is practically non-existent as the islands in Sitangkai are small. Goats and chicken are also few. But when you have a bounty of the sea right at your doorstep, you would not really miss terra firma meat.

Sometimes if you use a polarizing filter optimally it looks to me like you're poking straight through the atmosphere. Definitely best viewed large.
One joins the Sinulog for several reasons: obligation, piety, community volunteerism, remuneration. But when you already are in the thick of it all, you soon realize that you are also there to have fun. These guys are seriously enjoying themselves and I applaud them for it.

Ramena beach is popular to both tourists and locals. Situated in just one of the 3 gigantic bays of Diego Suarez, the immaculate white sand coast of Ramena is among the numerous pristine beaches that enveigle the senses of sunlovers. For locals however, public buses are scarce except during Sunday when day beach trips become regular for those who want to partake of a piece of paradise. We took a taxi to this beach on a Sunday and with 20 kilometers of beach to choose, empty stretches are the rule and crowds are non-existent.
For the nearly 3 hours that we were there, I chose to skip taking a dip. I practiced with my Rebel camera as the lighting was perfect and the people could not be any more generous with their smiles- or in the case of this child leaning on her napping mother, her lazy stare.
