The folly of man! In late May this year, an oil drilling project cracked open a natural gas-rich water lode at a depth of around 6,000 feet (1,800 metres) inundating about 200 hectares of highly urban Sidoarjo with at least 10 feet of noxius mud high in fluoride and laced with sulphur. About 8,000 people have to be evacuated as factories, rice paddies, homes and a major toll highway were swallowed by hot flowing earth. Today, culverts that were placed to make the road usable are just about to be flooded again.
