museumPASSmusees 2024 - Wiels - Jana Euler - Alexis Blake
Jana Euler?s exhibition Oilopa, a contraction of the terms Oil (painting) and Europa, unfolds into a semi-utopian land, reversing the ascendant flows of financial figures while extrapolating on cycles of surplus and vacuity.
Originally conceived as a performance, Crack Nerve Boogie Swerve embraces concepts such as transparency, resistance, resonance and disruption?breaking free from norms, liberating oneself from the constraints of oppression and stretching the boundaries of art institutions. At WIELS, Alexis Blake (b. 1981, US/NL) expands the scope of a live work into a performative exhibition that encapsulates its past iterations while slowly transforming the present one.

Participarão do Exercício de 2024: Brasil, Argentina, Canadá, Chile, Colômbia, Equador, França, Alemanha, Itália, Paraguai, Peru, Portugal, África do Sul, Suécia, Uruguai e Estados Unidos.

SCOUT: "Daddy? Daddy!"
DADDY: "Yes, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Daddy, can we go out for a walk, please?"
DADDY: "Yes of course, Scout. Is there somewhere in particular you’d like to go?"
SCOUT: "Anywhere there are flowers, please Daddy!"
DADDY: "Well, it is wintertime now, Scout, so a lot of the flowers will be asleep, but we will see what we can find."
SCOUT: "Come on Paddy and Rosie! I know Daddy says that it’s wintertime, but if Cornelia found some pretty flowers for Moesje, maybe we can find some pretty flowers for Oleg and mijn beste vriend Peter."
ROSIE: "Who also happens to be mijn prins Peter! Yes! Let’s go, Scout! Peter saw me in his magical crystal ball, so I want to give him some beautiful flowers as a thank you for thinking of me!"
PADDY: "Yes, let’s go, but let’s wrap up nice and warmly first, everybear. "
SCOUT and ROSIE: "Yes Paddy!"
DADDY, PADDY, SCOUT and ROSIE: *Go for a walk.*
PADDY: "Oh look Scout and Rosie! There is a whole bush of pretty red Prunus flowers! We can pick some of them for mijn best vriend Oleg and your beste vriend and prins, Peter!"
ROSIE: "Prunes? Oh yuck! I hate prunes!" *Sticks out cute little pink bear tongue.* "They taste disgusting! Blagh!"
SCOUT: "Oh, I hate prunes too, Rosie! Yuck!" *Sticks out cute little pink bear tongue.* "Daddy makes me eat prunes when I can't..."
PADDY: "Ahem!" *Clears throat.* "Scout!"
SCOUT: "What?" *Looks at Paddy questioningly.*
PADDY: "There is no need to discuss bodily functions in public, Scout!" *Blushes pink beneath plush fur.*
SCOUT: "But it's true, Paddy! Daddy makes me eat them when..." *Lowers voice to a whisper.* "When I can't... can't... can't go visit the... the... the Lady Louisa!"
ROSIE: "Considering that mijn poor prins Peter got stuck on the poop chair, he might not like these Prune flowers that help you go poop."
SCOUT: "Oh, I hadn’t thought of that. We don’t want to upset mijn beste vriend Peter."
ROSIE: "Who also happens to be mijn prins Peter!"
SCOUT: "Maybe we better find a better kind of flower than these Prune flowers then, Paddy and Rosie!"
PADDY: "Prunus flowers, Scout and Rosie, not Prune flowers."
DADDY: "Actually Paddy, I think you'll find that those red flowers are actually Japonica and aren't Prunus at all. Sorry to correct you."
PADDY, SCOUT and ROSIE: "Oh thank you for telling us Daddy!"
SCOUT: *Scratches head.* "What is a Japonica, Daddy?"
PADDY: "Isn't that a type of Camellia, Daddy?"
DADDY: "Well, it is, but it is also the proper name of the Japanese quince or Maule's quince."
SCOUT and ROSIE: "Oh! Thank you Daddy!"
PADDY: "Yes, thank you for correcting me, Daddy."
ROSIE: "You are so knowledgeable Daddy!"
SCOUT: "I bet you know the names of every flower, Daddy!"
DADDY: "Well, perhaps not every flower, Scout, but quite a few common ones."
SCOUT: "Daddy? Daddy! "
DADDY: "Yes Scout?"
SCOUT: "Do quinces help you..." *Lowers voice to a whisper.* "Go to the Lady Louisa?"
DADDY: "Well they can Scout if you eat too many of them, but they don't work as well as prunes do. Why do you ask, Scout? Do you need some help?"
SCOUT: "No! No! No, Daddy!" *Shakes head vehemently.*
ROSIE: "Good! Well, now I know that it isn't a prune tree! I like these Japonica flowers! They are pretty! Maybe we can pick some for mijn prins Peter" *Smiles.*
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, includng the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
Being colder here, Paddy and Scout are wearing hand knitted scarves, Paddy is wearing hand knitted hat and Rosie is wearing a hand knitted cape made by Lorna's Lovely Looks. Paddy sports a heart pin and Scout insisted on wearing a pink cupcake one, which seems most appropriate considering his perpetual grumbly tummy. Both were gifts from a good friend who is very fond of both Paddy and Scout.

France. Alpes.

Calçado and Cristal Peaks covered by fog at the end of the afternoon and without sunset.
We tested the trail to see if it was possible for all of us to climb the peaks at dawn. It was.
We trekked 5.22 km / 3,24 miles in 3:22 hours.
View of the Alaska Range, including Mount Foraker (17,400 ft/5304 m), Mount Hunter/Begguya (14,573 ft/4442 m), and Denali (20,310 feet/6190 m), from Talkeetna, Alaska
Having not had the opportunity to see Denali (the tallest peak in North America) on my previous trip to Alaska, it was high on my wish list for this trip. Unfortunately our helicopter flightseeing tour was canceled due to fog, so my hopes rested on a trip up to the town of Talkeetna. After two days of clouds and snow, the weather was not looking promising; as we drove out of Anchorage, the sky remained gray and occasionally spitting icy flakes.
For much of the drive through miles of snow-covered boreal forest, past small communities and long stretches of nothing but snow and trees (and the occasional moose, which thrilled both my daughter and I), the forest blocked the view toward the mountains. As we turned off the highway toward Talkeetna however, the trees began to thin out and I could catch an occasional glimpse of the the Alaska Range, and what I thought was a hint of blue sky. My hopes rose - perhaps there would be a chance to see Denali after all.
Then the road turned and suddenly, ahead of me I could see it, the glorious Alaska Range, bathed in brilliant sunshine, laying just underneath a thick layer of clouds! My next thought was to hope that the clouds would not descend again before I reached the overlook pullout above Talkeetna. Luck was on my side however, as Denali and the other majestic peaks remained in clear view not only from the overlook but long enough to marvel at an unobstructed view from down in the town. (The snowy foreground here is actually the Talkeetna river, frozen and covered with deep snow.)
It was an absolutely breathtaking sight to witness, and I stood there with a mixture of awe and reverence as the view and the moment soaked deeply into my soul. It is a memory that I will carry with me for a long time.
THROWING ROOTS
In the easternmost parts of the humid forest, the cordillera cypress and the coihue grow together.
However, here, the rock that emerges in these shallow soils where only these cypress specimens resist can be seen.
For me, this is one of the most beautiful places we visited on our tour of the southwest.

Shiprock is a monadnock rising nearly 1,583 feet (482.5 m) above the high-desert plain of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. Its peak elevation is 7,177 feet (2,187.5 m) above sea level. It is about 10.75 miles (17.30 km) southwest of the town of Shiprock, which is named for the peak.
The shape of this rock is reminiscent of a 19th century clipper.
Governed by the Navajo Nation, the formation is in the Four Corners region and plays a significant role in Navajo religion, myth, and tradition. It is located in the center of the area occupied by the Ancient Pueblo People, a prehistoric Native American culture of the Southwest United States often referred to as the Anasazi.
So much for the prose. But we also had a special encounter there, which I would like to describe to you.
Since this rock is sacred to the Navajos, we parked in the nearest parking lot in front of it and after a short look I discovered this beautiful puddle in which the Shiprock was wonderfully reflected. I was setting up my tripod and setting up my camera when a small red car appeared from the right, then turned onto the path you can see here and slowly approached us. Already annoyed that some earthlings have nothing sacred, I expressed my displeasure and we waited until the car passed us. My friend said I shouldn't judge so hastily, maybe there were good reasons that they drove around here. When the car was level with us, it stopped and the driver rolled down the window, so it was easy to see that they were indigenous people - an old man and a young girl. He asked us what we are doing here and where we are from...both got out and so we had an interesting conversation with interesting people. The man was very friendly and he introduced himself as Herman (a German name given to him by his mother because the doctor who gave birth to him was a German named Herman...). Since we are from Germany ourselves, the whole thing was quite amusing. In the course of the conversation, we learned that the girl was his niece, and it was her birthday on that very day. So we decided without further ado to sing her a birthday song - Happy Birthday... and she told us with a bright face that she had never received a birthday song before...
We had already said our goodbyes and were about to drive back towards Shiprock (the town) when the little red car came towards us, stopped and the old man gave us his beautiful Indian jewelery which he had just been wearing - unbelievable...we thanked him so much and drove on...a few miles down the highway towards Shiprock I suddenly saw in the rear view mirror a small red car coming, flashing its headlights...it passed us, signaled right, braked in front of us and pulled to the curb. ..we followed him and stopped behind the little red wagon...it was our indigenous friends of course and Herman jumped out of the wagon and came up to us and asked us if we could sing the birthday song for his niece again - namely in German :-) which of course we gladly did. We took his niece in the middle and sang her Happy Birthday in German and Herman recorded the whole thing on video with his smartphone...
What can I say? It was a beautiful encounter of a special kind... and if you can make someone happy, then you're very happy about it. With good wishes and that we should visit them next time, we said goodbye.
This little story is now firmly connected to Shiprock for me and I also derive a New Year's resolution for myself from this. I'm trying not to judge too quickly - Herman, thank you!
I wish you all a wonderful and happy new year!
Was soll man dazu sagen?

When I took this photo I could not see in detail the peaks photographed being an analog camera.
So I asked the Chamonix section of the French Alpine Club via email for the courtesy of providing me with the data that I received this morning. I sincerely thank the CAF for its availability and promptness in processing my request.
Finally, I proceeded to indicate the names of the individual peaks in the posted image.

Civilization has forgotten what indigenous cultures always knew: all living beings have a soul. God doesn’t create disposable life forms.
When I photograph creatures, I tune into their essence & awareness, and share their indifference to what science believes about them.
Reptiles and amphibians obviously don’t know what a camera is, but some can sense when they’re being appreciated and loved. That’s partly why I’m able to get so close.
Odra river covered in morning, autumn fog. In the foreground in the center there is Opatowicki Weir. It connects two islands - the left shore is Opatowicka Island, while the right shore is Wielka Wyspa (The Big Island). On the horizon the city centre buildings can be seen.

In and around Columbia City, Indiana there are a few poles still standing along the old Pennsylvania Railroad mainline now (CF&E) that ran between Pittsburgh and Chicago. This pole line was abandoned shortly after Amtrak left the line in 1990 and the railroad became dark territory.
In 1972 my friends and I started insulator hunting along this railroad around the Fort Wayne, IN area. Sometimes we would ride our bikes over 15 miles to get to our destinations. By the year 2000, I had covered every mile of this railroad between Crestline, Ohio to Plymouth, Indiana.
On the top crossarm are four CD 145 H.G.CO. Petticoat beehives and two CD 152 Brookfield hoopskirts with sdp's that came home with me. Petticoat and CREB beehives were very common along this line.

It was a beautiful morning at Bryce Point in Bryce Canyon National Park. We were there before sunrise and managed to get a few more stargazing before deciding to take a time lapse video to follow the sunlight slowly filling the canyon and displacing the shadows - an intriguing story. And it's good that I have two cameras - so I was able to take some interesting telephoto shots at the same time. The light was just wonderful and the hoodoos started to glow in the first sunlight...

====================
The English city of Bath has both its name and its raison d'être in its source of thermal waters, revered since pre-Roman times. In imperial times it was known as Aquae Sulis.
The holy spring, the source of the hot, highly mineralized waters, is known today as King's Bath, and is a mixture of Roman and medieval elements. The current water level remains as it was in Roman times, showing the irregular edge of the spring arranged by the Romans. The upper structures, with niches, are from the medieval period, when the source, abandoned since the fall of the Empire, returned to its "wild", higher level. This has been marked by the orange mineral concretion along the walls. In these niches stod the medieval bathers, in the rather hot water and close to the hell's scalding "precipice". Going fully medieval.
At last the shed (on the right in the pic) is finished. As with any job, the work was broken down into individual tasks, each pretty straight forward with the right tools and skills (and a very patient Marybeth) but they seemed to go on forever! The unbearably hot days did slow progress down a bit, but in the end, it came together and even the doors came out just about perfect. The T1-11 siding just would not cooperate and lay flat, we wound up glueing and clamping just about every board in the pattern which was repeated on the inside of the door with 1 inch rough sawn pine boards. When the glue set we added screws and nails to the front and back. The wood accent on their fronts and shutters came from the old shed siding and even the slate used in the ramp has an interesting story! It's quite possible that some Nobel Prize-winning Chemists got their start or performed their studies on that slate. The slate was acquired during the remodeling of the University of Chicago Chemistry laboratory back in the 1980's, I've held on to it all these years and now it's found a second life. One remaining task is to regrow some grass but I'll need a bit of rain to do that and none forecasted until next week! Oh and just in case you're wondering, the colorful used car flags hang over the chicken coop area to ward off the hawks, they actually work!
Hopefully now I'll have some time to catch up a bit! All the best and other than the hot days, I hope your summer is going well!

The statue on the left depicts Minerva, the statue on the right is Hercules.
In the center is Schloss Lustheim, a small palace building in the Schlosspark Schließheim that was built in 1684 for the wedding of Kurfürst Max Emanuel with the Austrian princess Maria Antonia.
