Bigger is better

First of all, many thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on my first light painting Love At First Light, which has this evening appeared on the Flickr Blog!

The SOOC version of this shot is below. It's becoming more and more common with the misty weather that my night shots around Rickmansworth (on the edge of London) take on this tequila/nicotine stain from the sodium street lighting (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium-vapor_lamp if you're interested - had a few messages on this front last time I mentioned it!).

Whilst it started off as alluring, I've found it can be a little excessive and overpowering, as shown below. This shot only really came to life after I applied to the lower half of the frame a wholesale desaturation and cooling filter in the white balance.

There's a semi-ironic theme to my last few weeks pictures where the SOOC version needs processing to make it look less processed! This was definitely one of these.

It's a 520 second exposure, taken with the tripod stood on the ice itself. Whilst I crouched, worrying.

Black does boost its impact!

Since it was taken the ice has thawed, and yet, even as I type these words, the mercury is hurtling plumb down into Hades, and the winter cometh once more.

Hope everyone is having a great week - just back after a few days off and catching up now.

After some requests, we will stop and rest a little on that bench...but not for too long: we’re so close to our destination!

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. With a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.

Originally referred to as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, it was dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge in a January 25, 1867 letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle,[5] and formally so named by the city government in 1915. Since its opening, it has become an iconic part of the New York skyline. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964[4][6][7] and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.[8] - Wiki

Guru Bimbabati Devi is one of the most acclaimed dancers of Manipur. She is the daughter of Guru Kalabati Devi who is a well known name in the world of Classical dance.

Like most Manipuri dances Ras-Lila is associated with Lord Krishna; here you can see Krishna ( Guru Bimbabati ) is playing with Radha & her consorts. I am fan of this dance form - its color, costume, rhythm and swift movement is mesmerizing.

Every year Konark Festival is held at an Open Air Theater where the famous Sun Temple makes the back drop. In front of the 13th century architectural marvel India's best Classical dancers enthrall a large gathering of Desi & International audience for three days. Incredible Experience !

most of the snow has melted already.. almost as quickly as it came. i hope it's not the last of the snow this winter.

Two hearths burn firewood in a still to make alcohol from the juice of cashew apples.

Goa is known for its beaches, its food and the non interfering locals who do not bother the semi clad or ill clad or not clad touristas seeking their moments in the sun and the sand. Imagine a beach in North India, it would be a riot of sorts with rape pillage and a fight every 5 minutes.

The food is good and the booze is still cheap. Goa has its own trademark local brew called Fenni that is distilled from the juice of the cashew apples. The fruits come in season in April and May and the valleys waft with the persistent sweet and cloying bouquet of the delicate but strong cashew apple juice.

The apples are picked and then crushed and fermented and then distilled to produce "urrack" which is the first distillate and thereafter equal portions of the urrack and fresh ferment are distilled again to give you Fenni.

Visitors without fail, buy an obligatory bottle of fenni from the liquor shops that abound in Panjim and elsewhere and carry it as a souvenir back to wherever they came from. Most consume it to only crib about the harsh taste and the rather strong smell that exudes out of the alcohol.

It is not a personal favourite of mine. The general fenni that people buy from the shops is in reality of a very poor quality and adulteration is the norm.

It is said that genuine fenni is not so strong in its smell quotient and is smooth as silk.

Ah....Chicago! My second full day here and I'm loving it as always! There is just something about this city that i love more than anything! I have been looking forward to this trip now that I have a nice camera and have been envisioning all of the cool pictures I want to take. However, it is sort of difficult to take pictures when your fingers are numb and the wind is blowing at 1 million miles an hour! How do those of you who live in the cold all the time do it?!!

It is a blustery 27 degrees outside and I'm nice and warm in Starbucks enjoying a chai and a muffin. My hotel does not have free internet (boo!!) and I have been a pretty bad flickr-friend so far this week. I will be catching up on your streams as much as possible today!

Well, I know this is just a picture of blurry lights, but I didn't want to take my gloves off to focus and so this is what I got! I decided that I liked the result anyway :-)

Another one of the cell/mobile phone pictures from this weekend's hiking. Apologies for the loss of meaningful EXIF data - I'm importing these from my iPhone by email as it is refusing to sync, and for some reason this has stripped the file of the most interesting data.

This was from a really classy non-munro horseshoe just down from the Corran ferry. Whilst the terror-induced ice and snow of the day before (see www.flickr.com/photos/flatworldsedge/5198977853/) ruled out any proper camera kit, I'm reticent that I didn't take the proper stuff on this walk. That said, we were on the hills for 6-7 hours and the last descent was in the gloaming if not the dark. With a proper DSLR, it'd have added at least an hour and maybe tipped things into disaster.

In any event, the iPhone bore up quite well, even if the file doesn't live up to much magnification, especially in the upper reaches of the sky. It does look better pre-upload to Flickr; the first image I've ever had to say that about.

---------------

I do not understand anything of mushrooms and I never concentrate on them, but in this occasion I remained impressed on having seen them, they seemed to me to be so nice there in the middle of the fallen leaves that I could not refuse to photograph them. They were standing out for his purple so intense color shining under the first beams of the Sun that arose after the rain, the diversity of autumnal colors and the agreeable smell of land and wet leaves they flooded the thickness of the forest, the only atmosphere being created ... really it was a magic moment.

Re-posted on the annual day of this album coming out originally posted in 2010. On the 13 August 2019 Led Zeppelin Instagram showcased the original artwork from the iconic album featured in the 50th Anniversary book 'Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin'. They also include details that I was unaware of like who took the photograph. This post has been very popular with 107,500 views as of 25 February 2021.

What follows is my observation in seeking out the location of this iconic album cover and further design and album details updated.

Whilst in New York this year it was a must that I find the tenement block that featured on my favorite and Led Zeppelin's biggest album Physical Graffiti. When I got back home I set about changing my photographic view to match the cover artwork. On the web it is widely known that the building is 5 stories high, but on the cover the building has only 4 stories. When I started to compare my photograph and the album artwork I soon realised that as well as the 4th floor being removed, artist Peter Corriston also added a number of further elements that include extra tiles, faces and sides of the building. Part of the top right railing balcony was left out for a whole window frame to be visible. See my notes below. I have just amended the Wikipedia listing with these new findings.

Artist Peter Corriston worked with designer Mike Doud to convince Led Zeppelin manager, Peter Grant, that the cover art idea was a good one. Unlikely as it may seem, the concept was itself heavily influenced by the design for Jose Feliciano’s album, Compartments (1973). The new version was created by using a photograph of a New York apartment block, situated at 96-98 St. Marks Place.

Peter Corriston recalls: "We walked around the city for a few weeks looking for the right building. I had come up with a concept for the band based on the tenement, people living there and moving in and out. The original (vinyl) album featured the building with the windows cut out on the cover and various sleeves that could be placed under the cover, filling the windows with the album title, track information or liner notes".

The tenements were shot by New York photographer Elliott Erwitt. The front-cover shot was taken in daylight and the back was taken at night. Sepia prints were made for the outer package and they and the inner bags were then hand-coloured by Maurice Tate - the best hand-retoucher in London at that time. Jimmy Page described the cover as "A peeping tom's delight". The title was coined by Page to convey the amount of physical energy and creative writing that had gone into producing the recordings for the album.

The building is still standing today. In the basement is a second-hand clothes shop. The name of the shop is, naturally, Physical Graffiti.

Although Physical Graffiti was originally designed to be the debut release on the Swan Song label, the album’s elaborate cover art, which features a New York City tenement with interchangeable images visible through the building’s die-cut windows, forced a delay. The release of Bad Company thus took the Swan Song debut honour all the way to the top of the Billboard album chart. Within six months Physical Graffiti also hit that peak, giving Led Zeppelin another number one album, in the week of March 22, 1975. The centrepiece of the album is a song called Kashmir. Despite the fact that Stairway To Heaven is the band’s best-known song, Kashmir is generally considered to be the ultimate Led Zeppelin track.

An eclectic gallery of celebrities and icons inhabit the building and they can be spied through the windows. Amongst the tenants therein are Lee Harvey Oswald, Neil Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor, King Kong, Charles Atlas, Queen Elizabeth, Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s portrait of Proserpine, the Virgin Mary and Laurel & Hardy. Perhaps I should do a second version with these figures in the windows or with the lettering.

Peter Corriston lives and works in the heart of Greenwich Village.

Ti auguro tempo, per divertirti e per ridere;

CANTO XXXII (Segunda Parte)

Un padre que da consejos

Más que padre es un amigo,

Ansí como tal les digo

Que vivan con precaución-

Naides sabe en qué rincón

Se oculta el que es su enemigo.

Yo nunca tuve otra escuela

Que una vida desgraciada-

No extrañen si en la jugada

Alguna vez me equivoco-

Pues ha de saber muy poco

Aquél que no aprendió nada.

Hay hombres que de su cencia

Tienen la cabeza llena;

Hay sabios de todas menas,

Mas digo sin ser muy ducho:

Es mejor que aprender mucho

El aprender cosas buenas.

No aprovechan los trabajos

Si no han de enseñarnos nada-

El hombre, de una mirada

Todo ha de verlo al momento-

El primer conocimiento

Es conocer cuándo enfada.

Su esperanza no la cifren

Nunca en corazón alguno-

En el mayor infortunio

Pongan su confianza en Dios-

De los hombres, sólo en uno,

Con gran precaución en dos-

Las faltas no tienen límites

Como tienen los terrenos-

Se encuentran en los más buenos,

Y es justo que les prevenga;-

Aquél que defectos tenga,

Disimule los ajenos-

Al que es amigo, jamás

Lo dejen en la estacada,

Pero no le pidan nada

Ni lo aguarden todo de él-

Siempre el amigo más fiel

es una conducta honrada.

Ni el miedo ni la codicia

Es bueno que a uno le asalten-

Ansí no se sobresalten

por los bienes que perezcan,

Al rico nunca le ofrezcan

Y al pobre nunca le falten.

Bien lo pasa hasta entre Pampas

El que respeta a la gente-

El hombre ha de ser prudente

Para librarse de enojos-

Cauteloso entre los flojos

Moderado entre valientes.

El trabajar es la ley

Porque es preciso alquirir-

No se expongan a sufrir

Una triste situación-

Sangra mucho el corazón

Del que tiene que pedir.

Debe trabajar el hombre

Para ganarse su pan;

Pues la miseria en su afán

De perseguir de mil modos-

Llama en la puerta de todos

Y entra en la del haragán.

A ningún hombre amenacen

Porque naides se acobarda-

Poco en conocerlo tarda

Quien amenaza imprudente-

Vivan siempre prevenidos;

Pues ciertamente sucede-

Que hablará muy mal de ustedes

Aquel que los ha ofendido.

El que obedeciendo vive

Nunca tiene suerte blanda-

Mas con su soberbia agranda

El rigor en que padece-

Obedezca el que obedece

Y será bueno el que manda.

Procuren de no perder

Ni el tiempo ni la vergüenza-

Como todo hombre que piensa

Proceder siempre con juicio-

Y sepan que ningún vicio

Acaba donde comienza.

Ave de pico encorvado

Le tiene al robo afición-

Pero el hombre de razón

No roba jamás un cobre-

Pues no es vergüenza ser pobre

Y es vergüenza ser ladrón.

El hombre no mate al hombre

Ni pelee por fantasía-

Tiene en la desgracia mía

Un espejo en qué mirarse-

Saber el hombre guardarse

Es la gran sabiduría.

La sangre que se redama

No se olvida hasta la muerte-

La impresión es de tal suerte,

Que a mi pesar no lo niego-

Cai como gotas de fuego

En el alma del que la vierte.

Es siempre en toda ocasión

El trago el pior enemigo-

Con cariño se los digo,

Recuérdenlo con cuidado-

Aquél que ofende embriagado

Merece doble castigo-.

Si se arma algún revolutis

Siempre han de ser los primeros-

No se muestren altaneros

Aunque la razón les sobre-

En la barba de los pobres

Aprienden pa ser barberos.

Si entriegan su corazón

A alguna mujer querida,

No le hagan una partida

Que la ofienda a la mujer-

Siempre los ha de perder

Una mujer ofendida.

Procuren si son cantores,

El cantar con sentimiento,

Ni tiemplen el instrumento

Por sólo el gusto de hablar-

Y acostúmbrense a cantar

Saludos.

Pilgrimage church of St. Coloman near Schwangau and the famous royal palaces Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle.

Sunday before last, I popped out for a loaf and came back with a pile of colours and shapes.. what do you call that, a beachscape?

Here's another, I think one of my favourites, I love the pools of gold and the colours caught on the sandscape, is that one a new word?..

..Probably not, but you can see the pipeline from earlier shots to the left and the wind farm to the right all pointed out by golden paths and pools, and that leading path of colour catching sand, along with a few of Anthony Gormleys 100 Ironmen.

I've some more, and will no doubt share at some point shortly, but with my 40th birthday tomorrow!, how old is that!, maybe I'll find something slightly different over the next couple of days to show, if only to give you a break...

Oh if anyone at Canon wants to have early hands on a MKIII 5D, that would make a great present for a 40'th don’t you think?....

...but back to reality, I can look forward to using my new lighting gear which my better half got me, so that should be fun.

Unlike the tricky and lengthy noise reduction for www.flickr.com/photos/flatworldsedge/5126748478/ in this case I just maxed Lightroom's noise reduction and dropped the clarity. It's a 226 second exposure (F/22 ¦ ISO 100) from one of the bird hides on Stocker's Lake in Rickmansworth Aquadrome.

There were hundreds of ducks floating about in the foreground, but none made sufficient impression against the bright reflected sky over the long exposure. Hope everyone is having a great week!

The competition brief for this 180m long bridge, one of a series of new pedestrian crossings commissioned for London’s Docklands, was unusual. It called for a bridge with temporary and permanent elements - and the ability to open for shipping. Our design achieved this through two identical spans, one fixed and the other openable, which in its original configuration created an s-shaped crossing between South Quay and Heron Quays. As planned, the northern span has now been removed and the southern half swung into a new orientation spanning the partly infilled dock. The simple elements of the bridge – the curved lines of the oak-clad deck, two raking masts and the shifting arrays of cable stays – create a visual dynamic, accentuating the kinetics of the design and contrasting sharply with the uniform urban grid beyond.
