Mexico City established a new Guiness World Record for the largest number of people dancing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" simultaneously with 11 thousand people.

Here it is. Sunrise at Sunrise Point on Mt Rainier from this past Wednesday. This was the first time I had ever traveled to Sunrise on Mt Rainier. My normal stomping grounds on this mountain is at Paradise. I got up at 3:00am to get here at 5:30am. Plenty of time as the sun is rising later, around 6:15am. As it was going to be a warm day, I wore shorts and a t-shirt. Not prepared for 36 degrees at Sunrise!

Well, the spectacular sunrise warmed me up. This point is at about 6,800 feet, the highest point you can drive in Mt Rainier National Park. Paradise sits at about 5,400 feet.

I combined three exposures -2,0,+2 in Photomatix, some tone mapping and then compressed in Photoshop. I adjusted the saturation only a small amount, as the color you see here was really painted by Mother Nature herself!

Thank you for taking the time to visit my photo stream and commenting.

I've had limited success lately getting candids of people, (usually tourists) enjoying the views within my city. I find that people in a shot can really add to the photo. This is not one of my favorite shots, but i think it turned up well enough to upload... What do you think?

Thanks for popping by friends!

As We Grow Older

By Don Iannone

Summer flowers

Slipping away

Like the sun at dusk

The youthful spring, no more

In the old man's step

Dog-eared cone flowers

Droopy pink petals

Spiny orange tops

As best they can

Holding on for dear life

Our lives at times

Weak-kneed, fragile, out of kilter

Like some faint bad dream

Weighing upon us

Lingering well past morning coffee

Sometimes we wonder

Especially when afraid

If it's something we've done

That's driven our lives away

Or maybe just time to say goodbye

"...Por isso é que habito

no arreio sovado

tal fosse um centauro

sem lei nem consolo,

metade campeiro,

tropeiro ou soldado

e a outra metade,

o cavalo crioulo..."

Trecho de "Alma crioula", de Rodrigo Bauer

A lot of shots I like seem to have some kind of texture added. If done right I think this is a very cool way to add extra interest to a shot. Until I got my dSLR this year, my Photoshop skills were limited to cropping and adjusting brightness and contrast. Slowly I have been picking up different skills with a touch of googling and all the wonderful tutorials out there :) For this shot I used two textures from the Totally Free Textures Group, an invaluable resource. Armed with my textures, I used this tutorial: How to Use Textures to Enhance Your Photographs. And voila!

Have to say I am my worst critic, but I was quite pleased with how this turned out. Hope you like it too.

Some trivia courtesy of Wikipedia:

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a Las Vegas Strip landmark funded in May 1959 and erected soon after by Western Neon. In a nod to Nevada's nickname as "the Silver State," across the top of the sign are white neon circles, designed to represent silver dollars. On the back or north side, the sign reads "Drive Carefully. Come Back Soon".

On October 4, 1999, the sign went dark for about a month when the company that had been paying the power bill was bought by another company who did not pay the bill. When the problem was discovered, payment of the past due amount, under $60, was made, and power was turned back on.

On December 8, 2008, a small parking lot was opened in the median of Las Vegas Boulevard to allow official public access to the sign for the first time. Prior to the parking lot's construction, visitors to the sign were forced to cross the northbound or southbound lanes of Las Vegas Blvd. without the benefit of any traffic signal or crosswalk. While no one is known to have been killed while trying to access the sign, increasing traffic at the south end of the Strip has made a crossing increasingly dangerous. The new parking lot provides 10 standard parking spaces, two handicapped spaces, and two large spaces for buses or limousines.

From the archive, the series "Bulatura Sector"

My impression of the journey to Bade Emirate in Yobe State where I traveled to the remote areas in the Sahel zone, the Bulatura Oases in 2009.

The sector has a series of swampy valleys separated by scenic dunes.

The route: Gashua, Kachallari, Yusufari, Tuli-Tulo Oases, Laridi Oases, Kachimaram Oases, Burumwadi Oases, Tulo-Tulo Kulbuwa Oases, Jarari, Jajari, Fatimeri, Kuriwakko Dunes, Maimalari Dunes, Gu Malanti, Mainari.

People living here are farmers and livestock keepers. The valleys contain rich deposits of potash that are sold by traders at Gashua Potash Market.

The ethnic groups are the Kanuri, Fulani, Hausa. Bade, Shuwa, Marghi, and Manga.

A view of the Fairy Glen from the other side of the Butte. Can you pick-out the cosmic circle of stones. Can you spot any naked ladies dancing in the centre of the spiral? If not then read on! The steep path leads right up into that cleft in the butte and onto the top of the geologic feature. From there you can be the King or Queen of the Fairy Castle!

The Faerie or Fairy Glen, is an area of otherworldly appearance, located close to Uig in the northwest of the Isle of Skye. It is a quiet place, except for bleating sheep, and is often described as fairy-like, yet relaxing. It is wild and far out, covered with something in the region of over 360 strangely shaped little conical hills. It is a pleasant natural spot with more than a hint of mystery. The hills are erosional features and geologists say that the distinctive landforms have been caused by a large landslip similar to the ones responsible for other parts of Skye’s unique topography e.g. the larger-scale Quiraing Area.

The area of the Fairy Glen is reported to be more than 15,000 square metres and contains numerous small, conical-shaped hillocks rising 2 - 10 metres in height. These hillocks are overgrown with thick, green turfy grass, are covered with bleating sheep and strange yellow mushrooms of unknown power and use. There is a brook running through the glen, with a little lochan and on the side of one of the slopes is a small cosmic spiral of stones, overgrown with grass. According to local legend, girls who dance naked on the spiral will have their dearest wishes fulfilled... or perhaps that should read: if girls dance naked around the spiral, local shepherds will have their dearest wishes fulfilled?

Taken at Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. It was so beautiful here and yes it was hot, but after the heat of the tropics where I am from the dry heat was a nice change. We walked right up to the base of this large rock structure. It was amazing. I think this was called the Chimney, but I will recheck my map of the park and get back to you. This was the last National Park of 13 that we went to while in the United States and it was quite stunning. :)

Wednesday 19.08.2009 was a big day for cycling fans in Oslo. Lance Amstrong participated in the Oslo Grand Prix.

About:

The Oslo Grand Prix was arranged for the first time. 1,5 hours through the streets of Oslo on a 1 kilometer criterium track. The city was packed with spectators and Thor Hushovd won a big victory.

On Twitter we spoke about meeting and shooting the event, so I got together with Oddne, Øystein and Stian and found a fine spot in one of the corners.

I have previously uploaded photos of Thor Hushovd and Lance Amstrong today Kurt-Asle Arvesen is in the pipeline :))

Check out this other shot of Kurt-Asle Arvesen

These guys ride incredible fast around the corner, panning my 40D on 1/15 sec shutterspeed was enough to blur everything out. The flash was then used to freeze the rider :))

Color, saturation and such was enhanced in Lightroom, a little retouching in Photoshop and that was it :))

Staten Island Ferry Terminal while waiting for the Ferry back to Manhattan.

Info:

Staten Island is a borough of New York City in the southwest part of the city. Staten Island is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull, and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. With a population of 487,407, Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs but is the third largest in area at 59 sq mi (153 km2).

The Borough of Staten Island is coextensive with Richmond County, the southernmost county in the state of New York. Until 1975, the borough was officially named the Borough of Richmond. Staten Island has been sometimes called "the forgotten borough" by inhabitants who feel neglected by the city government.

Staten Island is overall the most suburban of the five boroughs of New York City. The North Shore, especially the neighborhoods of St. George, Tompkinsville, Park Hill, and Stapleton, is the most urban part of the island; it contains the officially designated St. George Historic District and The St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which feature large Victorian homes. The South Shore has more suburban-style residential neighborhoods and is home to the two and one-half mile long F.D.R. Boardwalk, the fourth longest in the world. Historically, the central and southern sections of the island were once dominated by dairy and poultry farms, almost all of which disappeared in the 20th century.

The borough is accessible to Brooklyn via the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and to New Jersey via the Goethals Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing, and Bayonne Bridge. Staten Island has Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus service and an MTA rapid transit line, the Staten Island Railway, which runs from the ferry terminal at St. George to Tottenville. The free Staten Island Ferry connects the borough to Manhattan and is a popular tourist attraction, providing views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan.

Marsa Alam (Arabic: مرسى علم‎) is a town in south-eastern Egypt, on the west coast of the Red Sea. It is currently seeing increasing popularity as a tourist destination and development including the opening of Marsa Alam Airport in 2001.

Marsa Alam is situated near the Tropic of Cancer where the Arabian Desert meets the Red Sea, and it has the appearance of a tropical paradise with its palm trees, mangroves and sea coasts fringed with barrier coral reefs. It has already gained a strong reputation amongst scuba divers due to its numerous and unspoilt diving sites both along the coast and offshore. Sightings of spinner dolphins, dugongs and hammerhead sharks are a frequent occurrence for those who venture into its waters.

My NOTES: Two things I want to do very soon. 1 - Watch the movie UP (it opened just this week here in the Philippines). 2 - Go wall climbing again, perhaps with some friends in Singapore.

Don't have any fancy strobe lights. So just used two halogen lamps to light this. One behind the figure as a back light and one right on top of it. My sister Dorothy had to hand hold the other so she gets part of the credit.

As I continue to crawl my way back onto Flickr after my long break I share with you another view of the Prague Skyline looking toward the East Bank of one of our favourite cities in all of Europe.

This is as wide a view as I could get as I enjoyed the sunset from Strelecký Ostrov on the Vltava River looking towards the Old Town in Prague, Czech Republic. The first mention of this island was in the 12th century back when it was given the elegant name of Lawn.

If you haven't already done so, you can take a look at a closer view right here. This was one of my most enjoyable sunsets on our travels. It doesn't get much prettier than this for me. I will showing you one more view next.

I hope everyone has a terrific weekend ahead the summer is winding down although it's still like 40 degrees here in Chatham and hot. Thank heavens for pools and basements.++

I decided to grow some black (as described on the packet!) sunflowers to add to the garden this year & chose 2 different varieties. I sowed 6 seeds of each variety & they all germinated nicely & I planted them in the garden only to have them completely taken out by the slugs (greedy pigs)! So I repeated the excercise & ended up with 12 more sunflowers which I duly planted out. This is the sole survivor (slugs again) which is just about to bloom. I'll post another shot when it's blossomed fully, that's if I can get to it before the slugs do lol!

The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. The Grand Canyon is known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon.

The uplift of the Colorado Plateau is uneven, and the north-south trending Kaibab Plateau that Grand Canyon bisects is over a thousand feet higher at the North Rim (about 1,000 ft/300 m) than at the South Rim. The fact that the Colorado River flows in a curve around the higher North Rim part of the Kaibab Plateau and closer to the South Rim part of the plateau is also explained by this asymmetry. - Courtesy wiki.

I preferred the North rim to the South. Mostly coz less people around and I prefer that any day, the reason being it takes an additional 200 odd miles from the south rim and many do not wanna do that.I was amazed by the sheer magnificence of this place. It really makes you feel humbled.I have so many shots of this wonderful place. I hope in the days to come, I can share some more of it and provide some more info about this marvel of nature! This was shot at dusk at Cape Royal in the North Rim.This beautiful formation is known as the Angel Arch.
