Barr Lake State Park is a Colorado state park established in 1977 in Adams County near Brighton, Colorado. The 2,715-acre (10.99 km2) park has 12 miles (19 km) of trails, including an 8.8-mile (14.2 km) trail that circles Barr Lake. Fishing and boating are allowed in the northern half of the park. The southern half is a wildlife refuge, with several wildlife viewing stations and a nature center. Numerous Bald Eagles spend the winter at Barr Lake and one pair nests every year. The park is popular with birders; over 350 species have been observed. The headquarters of the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is inside the park on the west side of the lake. (Wikipedia)

I have finally reached 100 uploads! Something I never thought I will, but it has taken close to 5 years of intermittent activity. Still I feel glad that I stuck with it as I have learnt a lot in terms of places to visit, composition and techniques from a lot of people here for which I am very thankful...
Coming to this one, when I reached the Lands End, as luck would have it, the whole day was bright and sunny and as dusk neared, the rain started and to be honest it was almost incessant and torrential as well. I was told that in the UK, if the rain is pouring down like there is no tomorrow in summer, two things can happen. It would either continue to pour down or it would start clearing...
I always knew I would not visit this place again and as it was raining, there was a small shed nearby this spot where I took shelter. I literally went down on my knees and started praying for the rain to relent because this is such a beautiful place that I did not want to go back empty handed...Now I am not saying all my prayers get answered, but in about half an hour, the clouds started moving easterly as the breeze picked up.
I got about 20 mins to complete my shoot after which the clouds engulfed the area completely and it rained well into the night. I could not do much of experimentation as the clouds were building up all around me. So I unpacked, got a few shots and ran back to the room. Even in this shot, you can see that it is raining in the horizon. One of my favourite shoots as it not only involved a gorgeous location, but getting a shot of this place was an adventure in itself...The first of the rock formation is known as the Enys Dodnan and the one farther than that is the Armed Knight.
Thanks for viewing and have a nice weekend everyone!

Dawn (from an Old English verb dagian "to become day") is the time that marks the beginning of the twilight before sunrise. This image was taken right before sunrise and the sky was at a brightness, not too dark nor too bright, that brought out the beautiful ambien lighting. In about 5 minutes, it would be too bright to see the lighting on the pool and buildings.

Loch Tarsan is a reservoir, dammed at both ends, not far from Dunoon. I've started to play around with the settings on my camera a bit (baby steps so please bear with me) I took this on aperture priority at 22. I'm pleased with it in that I think the focus is much sharper throughout the image than any other shots I've taken with this camera, but it's more or less wiped out all the detail in the shadowed area in the foreground. Any advice on how to set up the shot so that doesn't happen would be much appreciated, for example would I have been better doing a slightly longer exposure with a lower iso, or a much longer exposure with a tripod and filter, or something else altogether?

The Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French), is a mountain in the Pennine Alps. With its 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high summit, lying on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and its 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) north face is one of the Great north faces of the Alps.
The individual pieces of the chocolate bar Toblerone are claimed by its maker Kraft to be formed in the likeness of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt (French: Praborgne) is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.
It is located at the northern base of the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps, about 10 km from the border with Italy.
Zermatt has a permanent population of around 5,500 people, although the actual population varies considerably through the seasons as tourists come and go. The village is situated at the end of Mattertal, a north-facing valley, at an altitude of 1,620m (5,315ft). The valley is a dead end; although the border with Italy is close, it cannot be crossed by road, as it traverses a glacier at an altitude of over 3,000m. Zermatt is the starting point of the Patrouille des Glaciers and the Haute Route.

The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.
The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.
The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

Explanation: Interstellar dust clouds and bright nebulae abound in the fertile constellation of Orion. One of the brightest, M78, on center in this colorful telescopic view, covering an area north of Orion's belt. At a distance of about 1,500 light-years, the bluish nebula itself is about 5 light-years across. Its blue tint is due to dust preferentially reflecting the blue light of hot, young stars in the region. Dark dust lanes and other nebulae can easily be traced through this gorgeous skyscape. The scene also includes the remarkable McNeil's Nebula -- a newly recognized nebula associated with the formation of a sun-like star, and the telltale reddish glow of many Herbig- Haro objects, energetic jets from stars in the process of formation. In the Netherlands the 1st of January is traditionally celebrated with a new year’s dive (Nieuwjaarsduik). No matter how cold it is, at least 25.000 people plunge into the freezing water each January.
There are over 60 locations in the Netherlands where you can jump into the sea or a lake. The largest dive is held at the beach of Scheveningen, where well over 10.000 people plunge into the sea each year.
The tradition started in 1960 when a swim club decided to start the year fresh with a plunge in the sea. The new year’s dive received national attention after a big soup brand decided to sponsor it. From that moment on, the amount of participants and locations has increased every year.
---

It was a really wonderful day at the end of September but very cold and frosty on top of the mountains.
Mount Evans is a 14,265 feet (4,348 m) mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak — another Front Range fourteener within a short distance of a major city — which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline, rising over 9,000 feet above the area. Mount Evans can be seen from points south of Castle Rock, up to (65 miles (105 km) south) and as far north as Fort Collins (95 miles (153 km) north), and from areas near Limon (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.
Summit Lake is a tarn which sits at 12,836 feet (3,912 m) altitude in a glacial cirque on the north face of Mount Evans and the east face of Mount Spalding. To the north, there is a col (12,855 feet/3918 m altitude) looking down into the chain of two cirques holding the Chicago Lakes at the headwaters of Chicago Creek. By one count that includes several unnamed lakes, Summit Lake is the 13th highest lake in the United States. In 1915, the USGS reported that Summit Lake was the highest lake in Colorado, at 12,740 feet. Later secondary sources occasionally report it as the highest lake in the United States.
The land was acquired by Denver in 1924 and incorporated into the Denver Mountain Parks system. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in April, 1965. (Wikipedia)
