Devon General 930, 930GTA "Sir John Hawkins", 1961 "Seadog" class Leyland Atlantean with Metro-Cammell CO44/31F body in Torquay
BR (SR) Class "930" 750v dc 3rd rail De-icing & Rail Cleaning 2-car emu No.002 (ex-No.003) in BR Rail Blue livery with all yellow front end at Bournemouth, 07/85. The set is composed of ex-SR Bulleid "4-LAV" semi-fast 4-car emu cars: on the left is car No.ADS70270 (ex-977 366 and ex-No.10497 of 4-LAV set No.2954) and on the right is car No.ADS70272 (ex-977 367, ex-No.10499 of 4-LAV set No.2955). Early Bulleid emu's were a combination of Maunsell features, such as body construction, and Bulleid features, such as the all-steel cab similer to Maunsell's dome design but cleaned up (in contrast to the flat front adopted by Bulleid post war), round cornered windows (but without the characteristic Bullied top lights above the door windows of post-war designs) and improved traction motors. The owner of this beautiful 930 slantnose thought R6.00 was too much to pay for parking, so he parked in the middle of the drop-off zone instead. When I came back 2 hours later it was still there.
According to Wikipedia: Porsche offered a "Flachbau" ("slantnose") 930 under the "Sonderwunschprogramm" (special order program) beginning in 1981, an otherwise normal 930 with a 935-style slantnose instead of the normal 911 front end. Each Flachbau unit was handcrafted by remodeling the front fenders. So few were built that the slantnose units often commanded a high premium over sticker, adding to the fact that they required a premium of up to 60 per cent (highly individualized cars even more) over the standard price. Several sources claim the factory built 948 units. The Flachbau units delivered in Europe usually featured the 330 hp (246 kW) performance kit.
Well, I suppose my first sighting of one of the new navy 4 repaints in the sunshine at Wollaton isn't a bad thing! Just a shame it's going to be so difficult to get them out on the road, as the 4 only runs when I'm not in town to see them!
