De avant-gardistische stroomlijnvorm van de Tatra 87 doet ietwat aan een insect denken, zeker door de grote vin achterop. Kenmerkend voor het Tatra-ontwerp zijn de drie koplampen. Mede dankzij de lage luchtweerstandcoëfficiënt (Cw-waarde) van 0,36 kan de drieliter V8-motor de auto voorstuwen naar een snelheid van 150 km/u. Dan wordt het echter wel gevaarlijk, want juist door de plaatsing van de zware motor achterin is de auto moeilijk hanteerbaar.
De Oostenrijkse ingenieur Hans Ledwinka treedt in 1921 in dienst als technisch directeur bij het Tsjechische Tatra. Hij is de uitvinder van het ruggengraatchassis en ontwikkelt aërodynamische ontwerpen voor automobielen. Het ontwerp van deze Tatra dateert al van voor de oorlog. Omdat Hans Ledwinka en Ferdinand Porsche goede collega’s zijn, vermoedt Tatra dat Porsche zijn ontwerp van de Volkswagen Kever van hen heeft gekopieerd en spant een rechtszaak aan, maar deze wordt onderbroken door de oorlog. Later erkent Volkswagen echter de invloed van Tatra.
Een Tatra 87 was in 2006 te zien op een tentoonstelling over modernisme in het Victoria & Albert Museum in Londen.

87 101 Stephenson departs light engine.
Built at BR Crewe Works in 03/1975 (87036) it went new to Willesden MPD in 08/1976 after initial testing for new electronic power control equipment, using thyristor technology to replace the tap-changer transformer and rectifiers. Withdrawn by EWS Railway in 1998 it was cut up at Harry Needle, Barrow Hill in 2002.
Named "Stephenson" at Manchester Piccadilly by Jack Boston of Stephenson Locomotive Society on 12/10/77. The nameplates were unique in being of brushed aluminium with black letters. Commemorates George Stephenson (1781-1848) the Father of Railways.

this photo is a complete accident. we always hire a boat, us and my grandparents, and spend a day around all the bays near to port de pollenca. on the way back, i spotted the sun and the mountains in the shadows. my dad was driving the boat really fast and so i couldn't keep my camera still, and so i focused it so i could just see the suns flare in the screen of my camera, and took a load of shots, hoping for the best. this is one of my favourite photos from my holiday :) x
