Mr A. Kouwenberg and A.J. Kiebert were participants in the 12th international Tulpenrallye. Their Daf 600 DeLuxe had number 219. At their arrival at checkpoint Eindhoven they were greeted enthusiastically.
Note the city lights at the front, which appeared in mid 1960.
The first Daf passenger car was announced in 1957 and officially presented in Febr. 1958.
Production started one year later in 1959.
The Daf 600 was designed by W. van den Brink with technical assistance of Johan van der Brugghen, and was replaced by both the 1961-63 Daf 750 and the 1961-65 Daffodil.
The differences between the standard 600 and the luxe version include the two-tone paint (six colours available), quarterlights in the door windows, hub-caps, chrome strips around the windows and chrome bumpers. In the interior there was more colour upholstery choice.

The avant-garde, streamlined design of the Tatra 87 looks rather like a fish, not least because of the large rear fin.
The three headlights are also typical of the Tatra design. The low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.36 enabled the car with its air-cooled 3.0-litre V8 engine to attain a speed of 150 km/h. However, at that speed driving the car became dangerous – the heavy rear engine made it hard to handle.
The Austrian engineer Hans Ledwinka joined the Czech company Tatra in 1921 as technical director. He invented the ‘backbone chassis’ and was a pioneer in the area of aerodynamic design. The design of this particular Tatra dates back to the pre-war years. Ledwinka was a close colleague of Ferdinand Porsche, but when the Volkswagen Beetle was introduced, Tatra claimed that Porsche had copied their design. The court case was interrupted by the war, but Volkswagen later admitted Tatra’s influence.

Lelystad 19-06-2016. ELBO BE-71-87, GMC PD3751 registered in the Netherlands on 09-11-2011. The bus was new in the USA on 28-02-1947.
The small (because there are much larger ones not far away) rock arch and roots of nearby beech tree.
Both Dennis and Chris clambered up the rock arch, Chris going further than Dennis, but alas no photos.
The German word is Prebischtor but there does not seem to be a direct translation of the word. Tor on its own translates as gate, rather than arch.
