I am still a bit in shock at what we were able to witness. My friend and I went on a spur the moment trip to Big Island of Hawaii to document a bit of the Kilauea Volcano action going on right now. The first day, June 16, 2018, we chartered a helicopter with Paradise Helicopters and the second day we did the Lava Boat Tour. It was an incredible experience, to say the least, but also very eye-opening and pretty sad. Seeing the area where over 400 (over 600 now I believe) homes were taken out was pretty crazy. Seeing how fast the lava was flowing out the fissure 8 was even crazier, as seen in this collection. But seeing Kapoho Bay completely filled within days and Leilani Estates practically gone, was definitely the most shocking part. I guess we have to still remember these islands were formed by lava to begin with.
“Since May 3, 2018, Kilauea has erupted more than 110 million cubic meters of lava. This fissure has produced a lava fountain pulsing to heights of 185 to 200 feet (55 to 60 meters).”
These shots was taken on June 16 & 17, 2018.
A beautiful early morning glow, it was cold and clear.

A shot I got of the lava fountain of fissure 8 on June 16, 2018, part of the Kilauea volcano. It is crazy to think this fissure can reach over 200 feet (so I read). Was insane to see how fast the river of lava was flowing.

Today is yet another muddy, windy, cloudy, rainy weekend. Initially I planned to go for capturing some waterfalls. These are great days for photographing waterfalls. But the heavy wind doesn't help. So I have to spend the weekend lazy indoor.
That is why decided to post an old waterfall picture from last year. I went to this place before. But the water quality was not that great. The perfect amount of water is really important for good waterfall photography and that also differs based on the nature of the waterfall. For this one; large amount of water is better as that fills all the streams creating better effect of water. That is why this second attempt after heavy rain.

Papiliorama is the butterfly garden. It is a very interesting location. Probably the best time to go there is in winter. During the cold and dry winter it is nice to spend some time inside hot and humid tropical weather. But in general, it is an amazing place to be.
This trip was different. My son was asking me to take him there for some time. Specially after getting his own camera, he is getting a bit of interest in photography like his father. Not bad. We can go to father-son photo trips. Like I did few time with my dad.
I bought this 100 MM Macro IS lens for my dad. I wanted to test it before I send it to him. The best place to do it is in Papiliorama. At the same time I took my son with me as well so that he can also try bit of macro photography with his new camera.
It is not that easy to take good pictures of butterflies. They are normally very shy and erratic. However, they do stay very still when they rest or eat. That is what one has to target. This means a lot of patience. So, we ended up spending almost 6 hours there to end up capturing 10 images. I didn't expect my son to be that patience. But it seems either he really liked the place or he is really into taking pictures as he didn't really complain that much.
Overall, it was a good day out. Took some nice pictures, tested the lens; which turned out to be excellent. Spend some time eating lunch with my son and talked a lot with him. The little one has so many questions. It is really adorable to hear all those and he really felt great that I was listening to him and answering to his questions serious. Definitely a special day to register in the memory lane.
Stay safe, comply with the authority strictly, stay at home, stop the chain of the virus.
Take care and help the society to recover from the crisis.

I just wondered why it took me 10 years to get to this place. Definitely one of the most amazing region of Switzerland. Incredibility spectacular in autumn and winter. For me this trip was just a teaser. I want to spend a real couple of weeks holiday in this region taking photos and recording videos. The natural beauty of the entire region is jaw dropping even in Swiss standard.
I reached there late at night crossing several mountain passes in dark. I was pretty stunned when I reached near the lake early in the morning. There was a layer of fog above the lake passing through. It was like a dream. As you can imagine I was not the only photographer out there. This was just next to the road, so easy to reach. But there is enough place for many photographers to enjoy and photograph this location.

"Unfortunately", this is a full frame shot. I was to close, or had "too much" lens, to capture a whole bird in the frame. I wish that Canon produced more lenses with a built-in teleconverter. With a simple flick of a switch, I would have been 240mm further away. On the positive side, when zoomed in at this 50 megapixel photo, detail is incredible :)

This was my 5th visit to Rome and I was excited about it the same way I was in the 1st one! Now many people have their favorite cities and definitely Rome is one of my favorite. Yes, it is not that clean, not that rich, not that polite and not that perfect. On top this time there was issues with drought. But; if you are interested in history, if you are interested on architectural photography; this is a city to be. Wherever you look; you have an architecture which is few hundreds years old.
I away wanted to capture a decent image of Trevi. Even after several attempts; I never managed that. Yes; having access to the roof top next to the fountain will probably get the best view. But that being out of reach for us; this is what I could make the best. In my last visit there was work in the fountain so I didn't manage to capture it. Before that; I didn't have the TS-E; so my fountain was falling back and a correction destroyed the resolution and aspect ratio of the image. Overall, was never satisfied. This time though; I had chance to get something decent.
However; this time we had a strange experience with the Roman Police. There was a police standing there and chit chatting with another police. The other police seemed to have duty somewhere else based on how much I can get from the conversation. Oh yes; I have several Italian friends and I can understand little bit of the side conversation. Any way; basically they were just standing there as a formal routine. Now; I asked them to move a little bit for 2 minutes so that I can get the shot and go. Ok; that was my mistake; I thought the Roman police will be the same as the Swiss police. Big mistake and this is what happens when you get used to good things.
The guy really got very upset and told me that I can't use tripod to take picture there without permission. Are you kidding! I was standing there for almost 45 minutes with the tripod. I took pictures all over Rome for several years with police roaming all around me without any objection. So where did this come from! Well, this is called ego and this is what differentiate a good person and a bad person. Any way; I should have guessed that. But off course; these guys are not clever enough to know things. He came in-front of the camera and started moving thinking that he is ruining my image. But the fact is; the long exposure didn't capture a bit of him. Do you see the police in the frame? We just took our time as if we were packing the bag and the image came out all right.
Few days before I saw that someone put red color on the water of the fountain. That tells you how useless these people are. They can't stop anything it seems. They just stand there and not sure do what. The best they can do is to annoy people who actually is not making any harm. They have no capability to manage real problems. Being said that; I guess it is the same in most of the places.
At least you don't feel unsafe going out as there are police everywhere in Rome at night. If you want a decent image without 1000s of people roaming around in front of your lens; you need to be up whole night and the presence of the security force and police makes me feel safe in such situations.

Although body wise, very similar to a Barn Owl in size, a Short Eared Owl's wings are much longer. If anyone knows why - please let me know?
They seem to hunt in a similar fashion to Barn Owls, but perhaps the longer wings are an advantage when it comes to migration to and from their breeding grounds? Barn Owls as far as I am aware, tend to stay in one place, normally quite near to where they were hatched.

Ok. Firstly I am not sure why I wanted to stand there in the middle of the road. Probably a brain fade after consecutive early morning starts! But it ended up not being so bad. In this age of selfie; sometime it probably makes send that serious photographers like us also try to include ourselves in our own images. You can say this as my own style of selfie!
No. This time it is not to show the perspective of the building as I am too close to a 24MM lens. This time it was really for some fun. As you can imagine, I do have images without myself in the frame. But somehow I rather though of sharing this one for fun.
The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant'Angelo, is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The structure was once the tallest building in Rome.
