Troops from the 2nd Infantry Division arriving in Belfast during late 1943 when American forces began a second build-up in Northern Ireland as a precursor to the 1944 invasion of France.

The 2nd Infantry Division arrived in stages beginning on the 25th September 1943 and lasting into November. Arriving from England they were to conduct training in Northern Ireland in preparation for the forthcoming invasion.

The primary combat formations programmed for fitting out in Northern Ireland during the Autumn of 1943 were: XV Corps; 2nd, 5th, and 8th Infantry Divisions; 2nd Airborne Brigade (with 507th and 508th Parachute Infantry regiments); and 6th Cavalry.

Lt Henry E. Hank LeFebvre, pictured at a yet-to-be-identified location, possibly in Belfast. The location proves elusive, most of Belfast's religious buildings seem to have columns on either side of their doors, but not this example. However, it could also be a building in the Portstewart or Coleraine area.

Hank LeFebvre was a Sergeant in the National Guard before having the opportunity to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) and gain a commission. He attended OCS in 1942 at Fort Benning Georgia, a location that may have influenced his decision to volunteer as a paratrooper. He completed jump school and was transferred to the 508th where he took on the role of a platoon leader arriving in Northern Ireland with the 508th in January 1944. LeFebvre made the combat jump into Normandy on 6 June 1944. He subsequently made the combat jump into Holland and served throughout the rest of WW2 with the 82nd Airborne in the Ardennes and Central Europe.
