The Goggomobil microcar was presented in Autumn 1954 by Hans Glas GmbH, Dingolfing, Bayern. Chief engineer was Karl Dompert.
The Goggomobil T250/T300 series was expanded with the T400 in October 1957.
A second front wiper came late 1956 for model year 1957.
From March 1964 onwards the door hinges of all models were replaced to the front side of the doors (conventional way).
In 1966 the Glas company was bought by BMW, but the production of these microcars remained till 1969.

The Saab 96 was a world rally giant killer. Powered by a 38bhp DKW type two stroke engine, longitududinally mounted. Three speed column gear change, with a free wheel. Available in the UK from 1961, four speed gearbox from 1963 and dual circuit brakes 1964. In 1965 the engine was uprated to 40bhp and there was an optional 57bhp version with triple carburettors and oil injection, was used in the Sport and Monte Carlo models. Some late cars have front disc brakes.
Compared to its predecessor, the Saab 93, the 96 featured greater and more easily accessible storage space and larger rear window. The front end was lengthened for 1965 models, in preparation for a new engine, and the radiator was placed ahead of the engine, rather than above and behind, a leftover from the thermosiphon cooling days. Both front and rear windows were enlarged slightly for 1968 models.
The Saab 96 was driven most famously by Erik Carlsson, in many international rallies. His most famous successes were first in the 1960, 1961 and 1962 RAC Rallies and first in the 1962 and 1963 Monte Carlo Rallies. It was these successive, top-level victories that put the Saab 96 'on the map' and established its reputation for reliability and toughness. Carlsson also competed in the East African Safari Rally. Famous rallying names such as Simo Lampinen, Per Eklund, Pat Moss-Carlsson, Tom Trana, Stig Blomqvist and Carl Orrenius have also been connected with the Saab 96.

My old Supa5. This is my favourite motorcycle of all the many I have owned. A very relaxing bike to ride over a long distance. Seen in around 1992. A scan of a 35mm negative.
I'm not a big fan of photos taken at rallies ... unless the bus is travelling off site, but this one deserves a share I reckon.
An all Cheshire hat-trick, chassis built in Sandbach by Foden, body at Church Lawton by Lawton Motor Body Builders and operated by the erstwhile Sandbach firm of Coppenhalls. Foden PSV chassis were never 'mainstream' in the way which British manufacturers AEC, Leyland, Bristol and Daimler were, but the builder produced a steady stream over the years alongside their more numerous HGV offerings. Fodens were often quite innovative and quirky, getting into rear engined coach production very early. The one above though is the conventional front engined layout, but with Foden's own 2 stroke Diesel and their stylised 'modern' conceiled radiator front.
Now owned by Foden enthusiast Malcolm Sample, it seems the coach has recently been the recipient of a new coat of paint ... and excellent it looks too.

The new Wartburg 353 saloon was presented in Autumn 1965. It had a very modern and attractive bodywork for mid 1960s. But engine and technics were already out-dated at the presentation.
The 353 was designed by Hans Fleischer in cooperation with Clauss Dietel and Lutz Rudolph.
In October 1967 an estate version was added: the 353 Tourist.
1989 was the very last model year Wartburg offered 3 cylinder 2-stroke engined cars.

One of the more interesting cars at the first pre-1980 Haynes International Motor Museum Breakfast Club for 14 months. This was a magnificent event. A whole new resurfaced car park area has been created, which will bring to the end the sometimes undignified sight of cars (particularly powerful rear wheel drive cars) getting stuck in muddy grass!
This Inter 175 A is a rare microcar: only 300 units were built from which approximately about 38 vehicles have survived.
This 3-wheeler was built by the French company SNCAN (Société Nationale de Construction Aéronautique du Nord) at Villeurbanne near Lyon.
It was presented at the 1953 Paris Salon.
SNCAN has its origin in the aircraft industry. Seeing this basic dashboard an airplane association is easily made.
This 175 A is part of the collection of Musée Henri Malartre.

During 1952 the German engineer Fritz Fend (1920-2000) had developed his Kabinenroller into a small tandem 2-seater: the 1953-54 KR 175, which was succeeded by this KR 200.
This microcar was built by the Regensburger Messerschmitt-Werk. When this company came into financial trouble in 1956, Fritz Fend took over the direction while the company was renamed Fahrzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH. Regensburg (FMR).

Bulto was constantly upgrading his machines, making them even more competitive. The new Sherpa received a major make over around 1970, and the projected Alpina was intended as a replacement for the old Sherpa. The Alpina was advertised as a trials bike, but in truth was more of a trail-riding machine, ideal for dirt tracks. The new model was essentially using the same frame as the Sherpa, with slightly different geometry a longer saddle, larger fuel tank and basic lights. The Alpina weighed in at a very modest 217 curbside pounds (claimed), as opposed to an equivalent English 250 four-stroke single, which could run almost 300 pounds.

This is one of my most special and dear photographs. That is because of its narrative power. It tells not only so much but also such a tragic story.
At first if you look at the date Febr. 19, 1991 we can conclude that the owners are tourists from the former DDR who probably are visiting Holland for their first time, just fifteen months after the borders were opened.
They probably had the save money for a long time to be able to make this dream journey possible: finally discovering the West. The free West. Finally be part of this ideal world after waiting for so many years.
And what happens during the first night spending in Amsterdam: window damaged, belongings got stolen, stuck on this place by this wheel clamp, and look thoroughly at the windscreen: they got a ticket by the parking police too.
A warm welcome to the free West...
I felt sorry for them and was shocked and ashamed. But on the other hand this situation was hilarious too!

Together with both the Wartburg and the Trabant the most well known DDR vehicle.
Production of the 'new' B1000 started in June 1961 with the 'Kastenwagen" (panel van). In Spring 1964 followed the 'Kleinbus" (passenger van with side windows).
A great variety of other versions like this pick-up or small truck followed in Spring 1965.
Manufactured till 1988. The follow-up was the 1000-1 van which had the same body but supplied with the new 4-stroke 1.3L VW engine.

Roland Schulze, Head Sachsenring Investments, telling about the new P603 project.
The P603 would become the successor of the old-fashioned P601. Also this car was made of duroplast. All preparations were done to start production for 1970. About 9 prototypes were actually build.
But suddenly the DDR government cancelled the hole project. In the early 70s, car-production had not any priority while the small export figures would generate too less Western exchange.
All technical plans and drawings, all production machines and even all 9 prototypes were destroyed to erase completely the whole idea.
The DDR citizens had to deal with the 'antique' P601 for another 20 years.

The Minor was developed and designed by Jawa.
The Czech company was founded in 1929 by František Janeček (1878-1941) who bought the German Wanderer Motor Cycles division (Jawa stands for JAneček-WAnderer).
Characteristic of the Minor was its aerodynamic body with again the fully integrated headlights. Czech car makers had quite a good reputation for advanced technics and design.

The Saab Sonett, also called the Super Sport or Saab 94, was introduced on 16 March 1956 at Stockholm's Bilsalong (motor show).
Featuring a three-cylinder 748 cc two-stroke engine generating 57.5 horsepower in a aluminium box-style chassis from Swedish designer Sixten Sason, the Sonett I was an advanced low-weight 600 kg racer based on aircraft design concepts.
Only six Sonett I vehicles were made between 1955 and early 1957, all RHD. The original prototype, known as "No. 1" and built with a manually-crafted "fiberglass" body, served as the reference model for the other five cars.
