After enjoying a fantastic visit to the mighty USS Nimitz, moored in Stokes Bay, the Solent in Sep. 1980, I made the trip down again just a couple of weeks later to visit the USS Saipan! Again, visitors were allowed on board, and as this one was docked, it only involved a walk up the gangplank rather than a choppy boat ride 😎 :)

In the foreground you can just see a small boy gazing in awe at the huge 'chopper' :)

USS Saipan (LHA-2) USS Saipan (LHA-2) was a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, the second United States Navy ship named in honor of the World War II Battle of Saipan. Commissioned in 1977, the ship saw service until 2007 when she was decommissioned. In 2009 the ship was sold for scrapping.

Saipan's operational career began in July 1979 when she was diverted from Fleet Refresher Training to Special Contingency Operations, for possible non-combatant evacuation of American personnel from the Nicaraguan Revolution.

From February to April 1980, Saipan was involved in Anorak Express 80. The Navy crew of around 800 and an entire Marine battalion of over 2,000 sailed from Norfolk to Norway. In May, Saipan was underway to augment U.S. Coast Guard efforts to assist Cuban refugees crossing the Straits of Florida to the United States during the Mariel boatlift. On 25 August, Saipan departed Norfolk for the first Mediterranean deployment by an LHA.

Saipan was decommissioned on 20 April 2007 at her home port in Naval Station Norfolk. On 30 September 2009, a contract to dismantle Saipan was issued to International Shipbreaking Ltd, Brownsville, Texas and on 28 October 2009 the ship departed Philadelphia under tow. The Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion (Sikorsky S-65) is an American family of heavy-lift transport helicopters designed and built by the American rotorcraft manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft. It was originally developed in response to a request from the United States Navy's Bureau of Naval Weapons made in March 1962 for a replacement for the Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave helicopters flown by the United States Marine Corps (USMC). In July 1962, Sikorsky's proposal, which was basically a scaled-up S-61R fitted with twin General Electric T64 turboshaft engines and the dynamic system of the S-64/CH-54, was selected.

On 14 October 1964, the YCH-53A performed its maiden flight; the first deliveries of production CH-53s to operational units commenced on 12 September 1966. The first combat use of the type occurred during the following year when it was deployed to the Vietnam theatre; the CH-53 quickly proved its value for moving heavy payloads, particularly in the recovery of damaged aircraft. Update 10/2/2019: Tragically, '909' today crashed. They had engine trouble and were attempting to land at a Connecticut airport; of the 13 aboard there were 5 with injuries and loss of 7 lives, including the co-pilot and the pilot 'Mac', who I'd flown with over a dozen times while volunteering as crew with the Collings Foundation on the annual Wings of Freedom Tour of over 100 United States cities.

With the summer schedule coming to a close, it is always fascinating to look forward to what the forthcoming winter schedule has to offer as it typically features reduced frequencies and cuts to capacity which isn't unusual. With many airlines having now finalised their upcoming W24 schedules, it is time to look at what is in store for the US3 at London Heathrow.

Out of the US3, American Airlines provides the largest amount of flights into and out of London Heathrow, thanks to their joint-venture partnership with fellow Oneworld member, British Airways.

American Airlines from the 28th October 2024 will operate 19 daily flights to and from London Heathrow which are as follows:

-Boston-Logan: AA108/109 continues to operate daily utilising Boeing 777-200ERs.

-Charlotte-Douglas: Continues to operate thrice daily; AA732/733 and AA734/731 utilises Boeing 777-200ERs, whilst AA730/735 will utilise Boeing 777-200ERs initially until 5th November 2024 going over to Boeing 777-300ERs.

-Chicago-O'Hare: Reduced from thrice to twice daily; AA86/91 and AA90/87 utilises Boeing 787-9s.

-Dallas-Fort Worth: Continues to operate thrice daily; AA20/51 and AA50/79 utilises Boeing 777-300ERs, whilst AA78/21 utilises Boeing 787-9s instead of Boeing 777-200ERs.

-Los Angeles: Continues to operate twice daily; AA134/135 utilises Boeing 777-300ERs, whilst AA136/137 utilises Boeing 777-200ERs.

-Miami: Operates twice daily; AA38/57 and AA56/39 utilises Boeing 777-300ERs.

-New York-John F. Kennedy: Operates 4-times daily; AA142/103 and AA100/105 utilises Boeing 777-200ERs, whilst AA106/107 and AA104/141 utilises Boeing 777-300ERs.

-Philadelphia: Reduced from twice to single daily; AA728/729 utilises Boeing 787-9s.

-Phoenix-Sky Harbor: Daily flight (AA194/195) cancelled for the entire W24 schedule.

American Airlines continues to provide a variety of routes to and from London Heathrow with various changes to their schedule; certain routes feature the usual reductions notably Chicago-O'Hare and Philadelphia each losing a daily flight, however one route that won't operate this winter will be their daily flight to and from Phoenix-Sky Harbor, very likely relying on British Airways to continue providing the service. Dallas-Fort Worth also sees a notable change with a Boeing 787-9 operating one of 3 daily flights, the rest being in the hands of Boeing 777-300ERs. Already mentioned previously, Charlotte-Douglas sees the introduction of Boeing 777-300ERs.

Currently, American Airlines operates 59 Boeing 787s, which includes 37 Boeing 787-8s and 22 Boeing 787-9s. American Airlines have 30 Boeing 787-9s on-order.

November Eight Three Two Alpha Alpha is one of 22 Boeing 787-9s operated by American Airlines, delivered new to the carrier on 14th November 2017 and she is powered by 2 General Electric GEnx-1B74/75 engines.

With only a month until the S22 schedule comes to a close and as Delta prepares for the upcoming W22 schedule, the carrier has all but confirmed their flights for the upcoming winter period, however unsurprisingly for many carriers they are in process of preparing for the S23 schedule commencing from late-March 2023.

Indeed, Delta already made preliminary changes for the S23 schedule but very recently, the carrier has been making further changes to their long-haul schedule, notably the introduction and re-introduction of brand new routes as air travel continues to recover.

For the S23 schedule, Delta will be ramping up their schedule into London Heathrow effective from 25th March 2023 unless otherwise stated which are as follows:

-Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta: Continues to operate twice-daily; DL30/31 and DL32/33 utilising Boeing 767-400ERs.

-Boston-Logan: Continues to operate daily; DL58/59 utilising Boeing 767-400ERs.

-Detroit-Metropolitan Wayne County: Continues to operate twice-daily; DL16/17 and DL18/19 utilising Airbus A330-200s.

-Los Angeles: Newly reintroduced after being cancelled from September 2015; will operate daily utilising Airbus A330-900s (DL186/187).

-Minneapolis-St. Paul: Continues to operate daily; DL10/11 utilising Airbus A330-200s replacing Boeing 767-400ERs.

-New York-John F. Kennedy: Continues to operate twice-daily; flights have been renumbered with DL1/2 becoming DL3/4, and DL3/4 renumbered DL5/6. DL3/4 will continue to utilise Boeing 767-400ERs whilst DL5/6 will utilise Airbus A330-900s.

-Salt Lake City: Operates daily; DL50/51 will utilise Airbus A330-900s replacing Airbus A330-200s.

-Seattle-Tacoma: Operates daily; DL20/21 initially scheduled to utilise Airbus A330-900s but will now utilise Airbus A330-300s replacing previously allocated Boeing 767-400ERs.

As ever, these changes are provisional but there is a considerable ramp up in regards to aircraft type and product being offered to match with Virgin Atlantic. For Delta, the carrier will operate 77 weekly flights from London Heathrow; 4 of those daily flights remain in the hands of their newly refurbished Boeing 767-400ERs, otherwise Airbus A330s make up the lion-share with 3 daily flights provided by Airbus A330-200s, one by Airbus A330-300s and 3 by the new Airbus A330-900s.

Since initially posting their changes a few months prior, Delta tentatively scheduled Airbus A330-900s into London Heathrow on a regular basis with Salt Lake City and Seattle-Tacoma the first two flights to receive the type; this has now changed whilst Salt Lake City retains the Airbus A330-900s, Seattle-Tacoma will have to wait with Airbus A330-300s replacing the Boeing 767-400ERs. Another notable change is one of 2 daily flights from New York-John F. Kennedy will operate with Airbus A330-900s operating alongside the Boeing 767-400ERs.

Finally, Delta will reinstate their daily service from Los Angeles with Airbus A330-900s, which originally operated for the S15 schedule with Boeing 767-300ERs but prematurely cancelled in September 2015. It is very likely the reinstatement of their daily flight to Los Angeles is as a result of a slot-swap with Virgin Atlantic who at present operates thrice-daily flights to Los Angeles.

If rumours are to be believed, Delta will be making further announcements in regards to their long-haul programme for 2023 and with Virgin Atlantic confirmed to be joining SkyTeam from early-2023, expect more changes to follow.

Currently, Delta Air Lines operates 60 Airbus A330s, which includes 11 Airbus A330-200s, 31 Airbus A330-300s and 18 Airbus A330-900s. Delta Air Lines have 20 more Airbus A330-900s on-order.

November Eight Five Five November Whiskey is one of 11 Airbus A330-200s operated by Delta Air Lines, delivered new to Northwest Airlines on 7th October 2004 until transfer to Delta Air Lines on 29th October 2008 and she is powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney PW4168A engines.

Typically the winter schedule for many airlines sees lower passenger numbers and as such, frequencies and capacity on select routes do see reductions. Many airlines during the winter do become creative operating seasonal routes that otherwise would be unsuitable to operate during the summer.

Delta Air Lines is the weaker of the US3 operating out of London Heathrow, although this is more than made up with their joint-venture partnership and majority ownership of Virgin Atlantic. Whilst compared to the S24 schedule, Delta's W24 schedule into London Heathrow did see a reduction in the number of weekly flights compared to the summer.

One such reduction by Delta is their daily flights between London Heathrow and Seattle-Tacoma; DL20/21 has been consistently operated by Delta Air Lines since the W21 schedule, operating in tandem alongside Virgin Atlantic's own daily flight. For the W24 schedule, Delta chose to reduce the amount of weekly flights between London Heathrow and Seattle-Tacoma, going from daily to thrice-weekly.

In a creative move, Delta introduced 4-times weekly flights between London Heathrow and Orlando-International (DL22/23), operating alongside Virgin Atlantic's own daily flight. Orlando-International is interesting as none of the US3 have a hub at the airport, instead being a focus city and operating base for various low-cost carriers. Even so, the US3 have a significant presence at Orlando-International, Delta is the largest at the airport serving not only their own hubs, but also an expanding portfolio of focus cities.

The introduction of long-haul flights by Delta Air Lines from Orlando-International is not new, the carrier operates winter seasonal flight to and from Amsterdam-Schiphol alongside the more recent introduction to and from London Heathrow. Whether this flight returns for next winter remains to be seen...

Currently, Delta Air Lines operates 75 Airbus A330s, which includes 11 Airbus A330-200s, 31 Airbus A330-300s and 33 Airbus A330-900s. Delta Air Lines have 6 Airbus A330-900s on-order.
