THE LINNEAN SOCIETY OF LONDON, CONVERSAZIONE VISIT TO THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY BOTANIC GARDEN, JULY 16TH 2011 (21)
By now, the weather had greatly improved with sun breaking through. The Main Walk is the only straight feature in the original western half of the Garden, and is a very attractive informal avenue of large handsome conifers including pines and cedars. Many of these are forms of the Black Pine / Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra), e.g. R of centre, originally chosen to show their range of natural variation. These trees are part of the conifer garden.
The further notes below are based partly on the Garden's website, and on a short report of this visit written by Vaughan Southgate & Brian Rosen (in press November 2011).
NOTE ON THE GARDEN
The garden is set in about 16 hectares (40 acres) of land containing about 8,000 different species of plants and trees from all over the world. The garden opened in 1846 and succeeded an older, smaller garden elsewhere in the city. Initially (1831), the University funded development of only the western half, the layout of which is credited to the first Garden Curator, Andrew Murray, in consultation with Reverend John Stevens Henslow, and is now a Grade II* Listed Landscape. Well-known as a mentor of Charles Darwin, Henslow was an all-round scientist, who was Professor of Botany in the University from 1825 to 1861. He had firm ideas about variation and the nature of species, and his garden planting scheme was conceived to illustrate this. So in an almost literal sense, the garden sowed the seeds of Darwin’s later thinking on these topics in the development of his own evolutionary ideas. The planting schemes were also laid out, according to plant systematics of the time, on a silt and sand soil, and this soil lies on chalk and flint. Owing to the low rainfall; extensive mulching is carried out, minimising the amount of watering necessary to keep the plants healthy. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used to an absolute minimum.

On June 24, 2009, a couple of hundred employees from the German tyre manufacturer Continental came to Paris once again. After the closure of their plant in Clairoix (Oise), the "Contis", as they are known, have become the symbol of the current economical crisis which is sweeping the country. By their mobilization, they have achieved a better compensation package but still couldn't prevent the closing of the company. That day, they were asking the new Justice Minister, Michèle Alliot-Marie, to forbid and release 7 of their colleagues who had been arrested after some vandalism at the "sous-préfecture" of Compiègnes on April 21.

Jean-Louis Barrault (1910-1994) was a French actor, director and mime artist. His pantomime training with Etienne Decroux served him well when he portrayed the 19th-century mime Jean-Gaspard Deburau in Les Enfants du Paradis (Marcel Carné, 1945). A rebel with many causes, Barrault hid French Underground members on the set of Les Enfants du paradis.
