In another win for its Mural Arts Program, Jersey City is now home to the latest installment in a series of portrait murals by world-renowned street artist Eduardo Kobra.
Measuring 180 feet tall, Kobra’s tallest to date, the mural depicts pop icon David Bowie. Why Bowie? Many of Kobra’s murals are historical figures that represent peace and acceptance. He’s painted similar murals of Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Bob Dylan, Nelson Mandela, and John Lennon, all utilizing bright colors and bold lines. An ongoing theme in his work is respect for cultural differences and love for others. Bowie is a shining example of this philosophy.

Gracing the side of Cast Iron Lofts, at 837 Jersey Avenue, the new mural is unmistakable to the thousands of people who pass through Jersey City on the way to Manhattan daily. It stands as a beacon to Jersey City’s burgeoning art and culture scene.
“It’s great to see that Jersey City has embraced street art through its mural program and I’m very happy to be a part of it.” said Kobra.

This mural is the latest addition to Jersey City’s successful Mural Arts Program. Since its launch in 2013, the program has transformed Jersey City into an outdoor gallery featuring works by world-renowned talent as well as local street artists.
video“Jersey City has one of the most diverse and expansive mural arts programs in the country and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Kobra to contribute to the artistic landscape of our city,” said Mayor Fulop. “His work is recognized around the world and his Jersey City mural is not only our largest to date but also an iconic image that will draw people here to visit the mural and our entire collection of outdoor art.”

At an unveiling event last Friday, Kobra, recalled his early days as an artist in Brazil. At 12 years old, he drew inspiration from the underground street art scene in NYC. Now 28 years later, he’s the one inspiring young artists, both in New York City and around the world.

British Railways Class 20s 20160 and 20147 with a MGR working to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station at Warrington on the 3rd March 1989.
Challenged photos from the 1980s - or memories of a mis-spent youth
20190 + 20159 at Derby with 1M06 1915 Skegness - Derby Relief - after a long day out at Skegness with three pairs of Choppers, under the fluorescent lights and concrete roof of Derby station. It had been a very long day and I was obviously not up to focusing and holding a camera still 😎:)
Choppers to Skeggy
Between 1982 and 1984 I spent many happy hours with my friends chasing around the North of England after the remaining Class 40s. In between times, we did of course go bashing other quality classes, and the pairs of Class 20s that used to be employed on Summer Saturday workings from the Midlands to Skegness were always a riot! There were often three separate workings from Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, making it quite a game to try and scratch all three pairs on the day :)
'A day in the life' - log book update:
Sunday 31st July 1983 - three pairs of Class 20s were enjoyed on trains between derby, Nottingham and Skegness :)
The Pairs
20160 + 20180 - we had from Nottingham - Boston for
20163 + 20172 - from Boston - Skegness + cab ride in 20172 on the shunt-release! for
20159 + 20190 - our train back to Derby
My interest in the railways waned permanently with the demise of the Class 50s, initially from the Paddington-Oxford route in 1990, and finally when they retired from the Waterloo-Exeter services in 1992.
As well as enjoying the thrash, I managed to record many of the trips and railway scenes encountered on film for posterity. Those days are now long gone, but happily the photos remain for me to reminisce over and share. ;)
Photos that were nearly lost to oblivion!
The original slide was rescued from a box of 'duds' that I could never quite bring myself to throw away - now I am glad that I kept them ;)
Taken with a Zenith TTL SLR camera and standard lens. Scanned from the original slide with no digital restoration

This shot shows a rare view from the cab of a Class 20 - me (and my two friends) were very lucky to secure a cab ride from the friendly driver of pair 20163 + 20172 as they were shunt-released by the Class 08 station pilot :)
In this view, the first pair of the day 20180 + 20160 can be seen already run-round and ready for their return working to the Midlands. Behind them is the station signal box + semaphore signals. Our rake of Mark 1s can be seen starting to be pulled out by the shunter. We then enjoyed a cab ride in 20172 out of the station and back onto the stock 😎:)
