Class 20 No. 20160, unusually running bonnet first, passes through Attenborough station on 5th September 1981, while heading a Derby-bound departmental working consisting of just a couple of wagons and a brakevan. The cement works, seen in the background, has since closed and the site is being redeveloped with residential properties. Copyright Photograph John Whitehouse - all rights reserved

Taken from my westbound train (DMU by the look of it), 20 140 and 20 160 enter Nottingham Midland with 1E85, the 09:07 Burton-on-Trent - Skegness

Another shot from the series taken on 5th July 1976, again at Attenborough station, where you can see the then wooden waiting shelter on the up platform, complete with fire buckets!

It's hard to make out from this angle but I'm inclined to think the lady may be in possession of a Moulton bicycle - quite innovative and fashionable in the day, and spawning a number of similar variants all intended to make cycling a more convenient pastime, especially when combined with a commute using other forms of transport.

Typical freight action is seen in the form of a pair of class 20s approaching with a coal train, albeit unusually short, which is probably headed for Toton Yard. The locos are 20151 (which I believe was still in green livery) and 20160.

Although it was cloudy the shot was taken into the prevailing light so needed a bit of work to lift the detail. There are two or three more shots to come from this set which will be uploaded over the next few weeks.

Locomotive History

Following the failure of the class 17 Claytons British Rail returned to its initial Type 1 design and ordered another hundred class 20 locomotives from English Electric. 20160 is one of this later batch of class 20’s built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. It entered traffic in September 1966 and was allocated new to the Nottingham Division (in reality Toton). Apart from its final two months before withdrawal in December 1990 when it was allocated to Bescot it was a Toton engine all its life. It was broken up by MC Metals, Glasgow during May 1994.

Snaking over the pointwork and on to the Skegness road are 20160/113 with the 09.22 Derby - Skegness. A Cravens DMU stands by the lovely surviving latticework junction semaphore peg which would shortly disappear!

British Railways Class 20s 20147 20160 and Class 08 08415 at Warrington on the 28th January 1989.

A pair of class 20s arrive in what was then Greenfeilds Yard Shrewsbury with the empty tanks from Aberystwyth Oil Terminal which is somewhat of a rarity as they normally head straight back to Stanlow via the Crewe line so not quite sure why they were re-directed into the yard
