At 02:30 GMT (= local time -2) on 1 April 2012, the new episode of lava fountaining at Etna's New Southeast Crater rapidly gained vigor, as I left my home in Trecastagni (a village on the southeast flank of the volcano) to make observations and take photos and video from different viewing points around the volcano. While lava fountains shot from the crater, a dense column of gas and loose volcanic rock fragments (pyroclastic material: ash and lapilli) rose a few kilometers above the summit, and several lobes of fluid lava descended toward southeast, approaching the steep western slope of the Valle del Bove. One lobe appeared to come uncomfortably close to the "Belvedere" monitoring station, where precious instruments (including a seismic station and a radiometer for the measurement of heat emission) are located.
In this view, the cone of the New Southeast Crater is seen covered with incandescent material, and to the left of it, the old Southeast Crater cone is illuminated by the glow from the lava fountains. At times, the old cone was heavily showered with large glowing bombs, too

Autoroute [A480] | Grenoble 29/06/2015 19h20
We took exit number 2 on the autoroute A480 to get to the center of Grenoble where our hotel was located.
Autoroute A480 (France)
The A480 motorway is an urban highway of Grenoble, completely free and serving western conurbation over a distance of 12.5 km. The highway brought the number B48 until 1982.
It forms its western bypass, and borders on the river Drac almost entirely and links the A48 and the A51. It also links with the A41 by the ring road south. Since 2015, the widening of the highway from 2x2 to 2x3 lanes is causing a major source of contention in the Grenoble area.

Roadtrip [8] 29/06/2015
On my birthday the plan was to drive the Route Napoleon from Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey to Grenoble. The planning was 320 kilometers and a 6 hour drive. We started late this day and we had to go back to Grasse to find a gas station. About one hour and 29 kilometers extra was the result. We followed the Route Napoléon (former N85) via Castellane, Digne les Bains (McLunch), Sisteron, Gap, the Col Bayard (+1248 m), Corps, La Mure, Prairie de la Rencontre and we ended up in the center of Grenoble at a Best Western hotel. The highest temperature we experienced near Digne (+34° C).
In total we have driven 329 kilometers, all driven by Stewart. We arrived at Grenoble at 19h30 which means the average speed was quite low today. Leaving at 10h36, arrived at 19h30 means an average speed of only 37 km/h. Including photostops, lunch, rest and gas. The visit to the city of Grenoble was postponed to the next day.

Train 2405 dropped 3 passengers and picked 2 on this cloudy Sunday. In a normal year the fall foliage would be at peak on October 14 but this year summer weather lingered into early October. Ayer is 36.05 miles from Boston's North Station. Train's destination is Wachusett 53.16 miles from Boston.
Historical Walk in Broken Hill.
1. Corner of Argent and Chloride streets. Post Office. Red brick. Built 1891. Architect the Colonial Architect James Barnet. It is dominated by the square tower with the mansard roof which is on the corner with a veranda.
2. On the diagonal corner is Wendts Chambers with classical Greek triangular pediments along roof line and two projecting triangular pediment headed sections. It was built in 1892 by Wendts jewellers of Adelaide for they used Broken Hill silver in their work. They leased sections of the building including to the Commonwealth Bank from 1914.
3. Old Town Hall next to PO. Foundation stone 1890 laid by Sir Henry Parkes Premier of NSW. Opened 1891. Very ornate stone building with double veranda and projecting porch and balcony. Look for the griffins on the end wall.
4. Opposite Town Hall is a fine granite commercial building the Pirie Building erected in 1891. In grey stone with classical style with symmetry – triangular pediments over end double rectangular windows and another over the double central rounded windows. The architects Withall and Wells also designed the Town Hall opposite.
5. Next to Town Hall is old Police station. Red brick with arched veranda and built in 1890.Cell block at its rear.
6. Next door is the Art Deco/Federation style Technical College built in 1900. Now a TAFE College. Two government architects including Walter Liberty Vernon. Note central air vent and wooden cupola so necessary in this climate with no air conditioning!
7. Next is the fine Courthouse. Architect was James Barnet the Colonial Architect. Built in 1889 in stuccoed brick. Triangular pediment in middle of façade contains the NSW state emblem. Double veranda posts add to this sense of stability and power.
8. Opposite the Courthouse are Carrington Chambers one of the oldest building in Broken Hill. Built in simple style in 1888 with Dutch gable style pediment and decorative corner stones above windows.
9. Soldiers’ War Memorial by Courthouse. The statue of a soldier with a grenade was unveiled in 1925.By C. Gilbert.
10. Across the corner with massive bulk & cast iron balcony lace work is the 3 storey Palace Hotel with unusual peaked roof structures on the two corners. Built primarily in red brick in 1889. Now known for its role in the film Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Go inside to see the amazing painted murals over the stair case walls and ceilings.
11. Next door to the Palace Hotel in the former Bank of South Australia. Built in 1889 but during the bank collapse 1893 the building became the AMP. Built in classical style with pilasters and rectangular windows with no decoration. Great symmetry and balance. Triangular pediments over the street doors. It still has the AMP logo statue across the roof line although it is now a finance office.
12. Opposite the AMP is the Barrier Social Democratic Club. This was a union controlled town as most people were employed in the silver, lead and zinc mines but this organisation was formed to promote socialism. It was formed in 1903 and the building erected 1904. Return to the Palace Hotel and turn northwards to the left.
13. On the next corner right is the Trades Hall. Behind it is the original simple Trades Hall which covered unionist in the mines, the railways and government service etc. It was built in 1898 on land donated by the NSW government. The elaborate corner building was erected between 1898 and 1905. A stone building with cement rendered quoins, corner door, rounded windows, and French mansard roof etc. Turn left here.
14. Opposite the City of Broken Hill Centre (look for the busts of the group of eight who were the founders of B.H.P Proprietary) is the Barrier Daily Newspaper Building. The paper started in 1908 but the building dates from earlier. The unionist newspaper the Barrier Truth was established in 1898 and moved to this building a few years later. It was much later taken over by the Barrier Daily.
15. The next building on the right is the former Sulphide Street Railway Station which was the terminus of the Silver Tramway Company track. It is now a Migration Museum and railway museum and two other museums. Across the roundabout is the Information Centre. Turn left or northwards from this corner by the former railway station.
16. Turn right at the next roundabout so you are going around the railway museums. In the next street you see the Broken Hill Ice and Produce Company. Turn left at the next intersection and go north along Sulphide Street with Sturt Park on your right. On the next corner is the impressive Wesleyan Methodist Church now the Uniting Church. Architect was Frederick Dancker from Adelaide and built in 1888. It is heritage listed. Behind it is the stone church hall built in 1885. Used 1988 for the Pro Hart carpet advert. The walk ends here or you can continue up the hill.
17. At the next street Wolfram Street turn left and a few buildings along is the former Broken Hill Jewish synagogue. It is the most isolated Jewish synagogue in the world. Opened 1911 and closed 1962. It was restored 1990 and turned into a museum. Note the Hebrew on the façade. Retrace your steps to Sulphide Street and turn left up hill.
18. Up the hill beyond Sturt Park is an amazing castle style stone cottage. It was built around 1890 with castellations. It was the Towers Hospital of Nurse Robertson from 1890 to 1909. The historic government hospital was built in 1889 in another location. Sturt Park was created in 1895 but only named in honour of Captain Charles Sturt in 1944 – the centenary of his explorations in the Broken Hill region. It has a memorial to the bandsmen of the sinking Titanic of 1912.
19. 141 Sulphide Street is the North Broken Hill mine bachelors’ quarters building.
20 - 24. Still in Sulphide Street is the Catholic Cathedral situated on the hill with a panoramic view of Broken Hill. Opposite the Cathedral is the former orphanage now part of the catholic primary school. It was established in 1895. Behind the Cathedral up the hill is the impressive St Joseph’s Convent. The best views of the Convent are from the Catholic School car park in Lane Street. The convent was built in 1889. Opposite with the sloping stone wall is Bishop’s House. The Diocese of Wilcannia was established in 1887 and the first Catholic Church in Broken Hill opened in 1887. The current cathedral opened in 1905.The original stone and tin church behind the Bishop’s house is the 1887 Catholic Church best seen from Mica Street. Bishop’s House built in 1887 has a fine stone wall to the street.

Lothian Country's 190 SN13 BFV, a Voith/Volvo B7RLE Wright Eclipse Urban 2, on service 275 to Broxburn via Uphall Station and Uphall.
The photo was taken at Pumpherston Turning Circle on Saturday the 4th of December 2021.
190 was new to Lothian Buses in early to mid 2013 along with 176 - 189. In 2017, 186 - 190 were all painted into Skylink livery for the launch of service Skylink200, 176 - 185 remained doing City work. 186 - 189 were subsequently repainted into Lothian Buses livery, 190 was sent to East Coast Buses for a short while before returning to Lothian Buses in 2019.
In March 2021 186 and 187 were transferred to Lothian Country, in April 2021 188 and 190 were transferred to Lothian Country then finally 189 in May 2021.
in November 2019 176 - 185 were transferred to Lothian Country for use on Lothian Country's (new at the time) service X38 between Linlithgow and Edinburgh, 177 - 180 and 182 were branded for service X38 (176 never received the branding but had Lothian Country logos, 181 was never branded for service X38 since it suffered an engine fire and was off service for 2 years)
In September 2020 176 - 180 and 182 - 185 returned to service and were all debranded from service X38 ( this was both a result of the Coronavirus lockdown with all services ran with double decker buses loaned by Lothian Buses so Lothian Country's buses could get fitted with driver protection screens and that service X38 was withdrawn due to low customer usage pre-Covid-19).
In November 2021 181 re-entered service after its engine fire and is now wearing the new shared livery between Lothian Country and East Coast Buses.

This is one of my favorite custom projects to date. The client (awesome and patient) and I went for quite a bit of time, discussing ideas/additions/etc, to help make an "as-accurate-as-possible" Transformers Prime : Ultimate Predaking. Where to begin....This originally started as a Beast Fire Predaking figure (leader class) - It was quite far from accurate. The commissioner supplied me with MANY high-res stills of the character. He/we also worked with some of the best 3D designers to create many replacement and add-on parts.
HEAD : This custom Predaking has a new custom head designed by Incedius, and printed via Shapeways. The face (frosted ultra detail) actually had 2 eye holes which I filled in with clear epoxy to allow the 3mm yellow LED light inside to shine through. The head's 2 large horns connect via ball joints and fold out, then back, then down to fit inside the dragon neck when transformed into alt mode. The new custom head also sits on a new neck/collar shape also designed by Incedius and printed on shapeways. The original neck/collar/neck area was removed to allow for all the new parts.
LEGS / ARMS :Predaking's upper arms and upper legs were shortened a bit. All "hollow" areas as well as some of the Cybertronian tattoos were filled with 2-part epoxy clay, then sanded smooth. his 5mm ports on the forearms were removed. He also has fully articulated hands. Each finger connect to the palm via a ball joint and then has a hinge type joint on the knuckle. These articulated hands were designed also by Incedius (shpws.me/q4NZ) I recommend the "Strong White Flexible" printed material. These hands also have his signature arc shaped designs on the back of the palm and the hands are designed to hold 5mm weapons as well. On the lower legs, I added the blade/fin type shapes (orange) and there are 2 on each leg (one outer, one inner) the outer ones are magnetically attached and need to be swapped to the other leg when in Dragon/Beast mode to fit/Transform properly.
CHEST / BACK : A small embossed "Predacon" symbol was added to the chest. On Predaking's back are 2 "faux" wing attachments which have hingable smaller wings (accurate to the show's CGI) that clip onto the cylindrical shapes on his back (same as the stock wings) these add-on parts also have awesome giant spikes going upwards, making him even more accurate. These were designed by Incedius and were also printed via Shapeways. I believe these are exclusive to this commissioner's project only.
VOICE CHIP and ELECTRONICS : Predaking got one of the coolest upgrade options ever. A voice chip/module custom programmed and built. This module and speaker were all integrated into the chest/torso of Predaking and are discretely hidden. It contains SEVER different voice phrases. It is powered by 4.5 volts of juice, which is a series of coin batteries in one of the AA battery areas. The "push to activate" button is located under the battery unit. The batteries are east to access in case they ever get weak or worn out. In addition, the head's LED and chest LED are sync'd to the voice module, so while he's talking, they light up to accent the audio. I believe this is the (at least my) first custom with a completely custom made sound module! See the video!
Predaking's voice phrases are :
I AM NOT YOUR BOSS! I AM YOUR KING!
PREPARE TO PERISH!
I WILL TEAR YOU APART!
THE TIME HAS COME FOR YOUR EXTINCTION!
GOOD, NOW YOU KNOW WHAT MY FELLOW PREDACONS ENDURED BEFORE YOU MASACRED THEM!
I AM NO BEAST!
I AM PREDAKING!
BEAST MODE : Predaking's beast mode has many add ons. To begin with., his back was retooled and reworked to give better details (which also hide the electronics. The incredible articulated tail has 16 points of articulation, and is super accurate! It was designed by Ariel Lemon and printed via Shapeways. The rugged tail design also includes Ariel Lemon's "extension" This new articulated tail also has a 5mm post on the base, so Predaking can hold it in his new articulated hands! You can find Ariel Lemon's tail on Shapeways here : www.shapeways.com/model/1320083/articulated-predaking-tai...
Predaking's Dragon head and articulated neck were designed by Incedius and (again) printed via Shapeways. The neck has 7 points of articulation. The dragon head has 4 points of articulation as well (2 on the "splitting" jaw and 2 on the mandibles) It's also designed to hold an LED light, which I replaced with a new (brighter) yellow 3mm LED. The wire for this light runs down the neck to the base where an on/off switch controls it. The battery to the Dragon's head LED is easy access in case it needs replacing. You can find Incedius' Articulated Neck and accurate Dragon head here : www.shapeways.com/model/1277613/ultimate-tfp-beast-king-h... (Again, I suggest the white strong flexible material for this print) I took it upon myself to add on some new thin spikes on the top of the dragon's snout as well as 2 sets of longer whisker type parts on the bottom of the jaw.
From tail's end to dragon nose tip, Predaking is about 25" inches in length!!!
Finally, the Dragon wings have had some upgrades as well. I removed all the "webbing" (plastic filler) between some of the wing "bones" and sharpened up all the points. These wings were also given awesome extensions (designed by Incedius) which add a few more inches to each wing and another hinged point of articulation. With these extensions, Predaking's wing span is a whopping TWENTY NINE inches wide!!!
ADDITIONAL : Predaking was also geared up with some nice hand weapons designed by "Customs by Z", these were printed via Shapeways and have ball joints which plug into the existing sockets on the wrists. Also, Predaking wouldn't be complete without a nice light up display base. The base is 10 inches in diameter and approx. 3" tall. It is outfitted with an inner string/loop of red LED lights. It is adapted to be powered through a normal 120v wall outlet. The top of the base is acrylic/plexiglass and has an embossed Predacon symbol which catches the red LED lights on it's edges.
All in all, I loved this project. Originally, I knew nothing about the character, and now that it's done, Predaking is one of my favorite Transformers!

The Great Western Steam Up was held on the grounds of the Nevada State Railroad Museum from July 1 – July 4, 2022, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Nine operating steam locomotives were featured with many more on display. The event was billed as the largest reunion of existing V&T locomotives in over 75 years.
Daily events included rides behind visiting narrow and standard-gauge steam locomotives, a daily pageant of steam locomotives, historical vehicle and equipment displays, local food trucks, live entertainment, and “lost art” demonstrations.
The featured locomotives were:
Glenbrook, narrow gauge 2-6-0 (Baldwin 1875) built for the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company and used at Glenbrook, Nevada, along with an identical twin, Tahoe (see NCNG 5, below). It last ran in the 1920s and was acquired by the Nevada County Narrow Gauge for parts. In the 1940s it was placed on exhibit at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City and beginning in 1981 was restored to service (completed in 2015). It has been returned to its 1875 appearance.
No. 1, Joe. Douglass, narrow gauge 0-4-2T (H. K. Porter 1882) built for the Dayton, Sutro & Carson Valley Railroad. It operated at a mine in Dayton, Nevada, and later helped build Lake Arrowhead dam in California. It was cosmetically restored to its present appearance in 1994 and is displayed at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. It is a wood burner, but not operational.
No. 1, narrow gauge 0-4-0T (Porter 1889) built for the Sacramento Brick Company. It was later acquired by Hal Wilmunder and operated on his private Antelope & Western Railroad near Roseville, California. The engine is now owned and cared for by the Wilmunder family, and can usually be seen at the NCNG Museum in Nevada City, Calif.
No. 1, standard gauge 2-truck Heisler (Heisler Locomotive Works 1916), built for Bluestone Mining & Smelting. It originally worked on a 2.5 mile line near Mason, Nevada, before being acquired by a quarry in California. This oil-fired locomotive is owned by Chris Baldo and sees frequent use at Roots of Motive Power in Willits, California.
No. 1, Lyon, standard gauge 2-6-0 (Gentry/Strasburg/Kloke) which is a partially completed replica of the first locomotive built for the Virginia & Truckee. The original was manufactured by the Union Iron Works of San Francisco in 1869. The full-scale working replica was donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum by Stan Gentry, builder, and is being completed by the museum shop staff. It will burn wood as did the original.
No. 3, standard gauge 0-4-0T (Porter 1909) built for the Santa Cruz Portland Cement Company. Upon retirement it was used as a billboard for a chicken restaurant in Stockton, California. It was restored to service by Stathi Pappas beginning in 2006 and is currently located at the Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad in Folsom, California. Nicknamed “Chiggen,” it is oil-fired.
No. 4, Eureka, narrow gauge 4-4-0 (Baldwin 1875), built for the Eureka & Palisade Railroad. Retired in 1938, it was later featured in several Hollywood movies. This classic wood-fired locomotive was restored by Dan Markoff in the 1980s and is usually kept at his home in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
No. 5, Tahoe, narrow gauge 2-6-0 (Baldwin 1875) built for the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company and used in logging service. It was later sold to the Nevada County Narrow Gauge of Grass Valley, Calif., and was retired in 1942. It then appeared in numerous movies and TV shows for owner Universal Pictures. No. 5 is now part of the NCNG Museum in Nevada City, Calif., and was restored to service in May 2022. This oil-fired locomotive has been restored to its 1940s appearance.
No. 8, standard gauge 4-4-0 (Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works 1888) built for the Denver, Texas & Fort Worth Railroad, and later operated on the Dardanelle & Russellville in Arkansas. It was used in 1976 on the V&T tourist railroad at Virginia City. Oil fired, it last steamed in the early 2000s.
No. 11, Reno, standard gauge 4-4-0 (Baldwin 1872) built for the Virginia & Truckee. The most renown of all V&T’s Americans, the Reno was retired in 1937 and sold to a movie studio. It spent over fifty years at Old Tucson Studios in Arizona before being acquired by the V&T tourist railroad of Virginia City, Nevada, in 2021. It is currently under restoration. Oil fired.
No. 12, Genoa, standard gauge 4-4-0 (Baldwin 1873) built for the Virginia & Truckee. It was a back-up locomotive to the Reno and was retired in 1908. For the past 40 years it’s been on indoor static display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. It last ran in 1979 and was never converted from burning wood to burning oil, like most V&T 4-4-0s were.
No. 18, narrow gauge 4-6-0 (Baldwin 1911), built for the Nevada-California-Oregon and last used by the Southern Pacific. Restored by Carson & Colorado Inc. in 2017 after being on display in an Independence, Calif., park since 1954. It is normally kept at the Eastern California Museum in Independence. Oil fired.
No. 18, Dayton, standard gauge 4-4-0 (Central Pacific Sacramento Shops 1873) built for the Virginia & Truckee. Ran on the V&T for nearly seven decades before being acquired by a movie studio. It was cosmetically restored for display in 1982 by the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Oil fired.
No. 21, J. W. Bowker, standard gauge 2-4-0 (Baldwin 1875) built for the Virginia & Truckee. Bowker served as a switch engine in Virginia City. It was later purchased by the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company. Wood-fueled but not currently operational, it has been exhibited at the California State Railroad since 1976. An oil burner, it is not currently operational.
No. 22, Inyo, standard gauge 4-4-0 (Baldwin 1875), built for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. It served in passenger service and was nicknamed “Brass Betsy.” It was later sold to Paramount Pictures and appeared McLintock, Union Pacific, and The Great Locomotive Chase. Restored to operation in 1983 and currently housed at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Wood fired.
No. 25, standard gauge 4-6-0 (Baldwin 1905) built for the Virginia & Truckee to handle both freight and passenger trains. It was the first new steam locomotive purchased by the V&T and replaced older 4-4-0s on the passenger run between Reno and Carson City. Oil fired, it was restored to operation in 1980 and sees frequent service at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
