Moth Trapping down on the farm part 3 - Rarities abound!
My third session on the farm was last Thursday, and I decided to run 4 traps, 2 on each site (he North and South).
The plan was to stay with the traps until around 1am then leave them running until 4.30am whilst I got a bit of kip.
The day had been a really warm and muggy one with highs of 24 degrees but threats of rain continued, but luckily it wasn't too bad overnight and the main deluge came just at dawn whilst going through the traps..not ideal I can tell you!
The main problem wasn't the precipitation threat but the wind! A constant 15mph with gusts of around 20mph did not do the night any favours but it was worth seeing how things fared despite the breezy conditions.
Overall it went ok, with numbers slightly down on what I would expect, but a healthy amount of species were there to be recorded.
Some really local and rare moths made it all worthwhile.
For starter's I recorded a joint County 2nd Anarsia lineatella, the Peach Twig-borer moth. Graeme Smith not 6 miles away as the crow flies recorded one on the same night in his garden in Bishop's Stortford!
Anarsia lineatella is a fairly recent colonist from warmer shores, these could be spreading from their stronghold in Essex or may be primary immigrants.
Care should be taken though as there is another Gelechid that looks very similar, Gelechia senticetella.
Other moths of note were my first Herts record of Cream-bordered Green-pea a Ruddy Carpet and Waved Black.
There were also stunning forms of Cloaked Minor and Riband Wave.
Two moths are still outstanding for identification.
The list stands at 163 species in total minus the two unidentified species.

Me, my brotherl, and my dog in front of the beautifully and newly painted ITC SD40-2.
On Friday, April 30, 2010, we went to the Melvin Price Army Depot in Granite City, Illinois, because the Illinois Terminal Historical Society had acquired a former Union Pacific(UP) SD40-2, and they painted it with the exact Illinois Terminal Railroad, {also known as the Illinois Traction Company(ITC) scheme}, and it was on display at the Depot until mid-May of 2010. In mid-May, it was sent to the Respondek Railroad Corporation(RRC) owned short line, Squaw Creek Southern, in Indiana, which uses the exact same paint scheme as the ITC except that the words "Squaw Creek Southern" are painted where the words "Illinois Terminal" would be painted. So, when this is sent to the Squaw Creek Railroad, it will not be repainted, and the only change will be that the "Illinois Terminal" will be replaced with "Squaw Creek Southern." While we were there, a Respondek Railroad Corporation(RRC) owned GP8 was doing switching the entire time while we were there. I got some videos and pictures of the GP8 switching, and then the crew was like, "Hop onboard!" So we got a lift from the RRC locomotive back to our car! How awesome is that??? :D
It was my best railfan experience ever!
The ITC was an interurban electric line running between St. Louis, Missouri and Peoria, Illinois, and from Peoria to Decatur. It began in 1910 offering cheap, high quality high speed passenger transport between the three major points. In the 1960s, they dieselized their system, and switched to mostly freight operations, but due to the extensive street running portions and tight curves, the ITC became unprofitable and was merged into the Norfolk & Western(NW) Railway in 1982, making it a fallen flag. That same year, the NW merged with the Southern Railway(SR) to form Norfolk Southern(NS), which is one of the five American class I railroads in the United States and is doing very well to this day. The ITC mainline was abandoned around the time of the mergers. Terri Respondek, owner of the RRC and member of the ITC Historical Society, as well as Dale Jenkins, another ITC Historical Society member, are the ones who made this project possible. Big thanks to them, as well as to the RRC crew.
SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launched the STP-2 mission at 2:30 am from LC-39A on the Kennedy Space Center. The two side boosters returned to land at LZ-1 & LZ-2 on the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, creating the two side-by-side landing streaks. Had to play hide and seek from the bright lights of the dredge in the shipping channel at Port Canaveral, but the lifeguard tower was up to the challenge.

Saturday, February 11, 2012.Recap: No. 15 C'Town 87, No. 19 WC 69.By Brendan Hall..CHARLESTOWN, Mass. -- At this time last year, Charlestown made the trek West, down Route 146, to deliver a haymaker to a Whitinsville Christian squad considered the state's tallest lineup. ..This afternoon, the Crusaders came East to Bunker Hill, with a different look for the Townies -- smaller, quicker, more surgical -- and the result was very nearly a different outcome. The Crusaders hung with Charlestown through three quarters, before the Townies pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Whitinsville 31-14 in the final frame en route to an 87-69 victory. .."That team's very good, I thought that was the best shooting team we saw," Charlestown head coach Edson Cardoso said. "They're very well balanced, with a real good point guard, big man, two-guard, so I knew coming into this game it was going to be a battle. I told the guys, 'You're going to see a team like this in the state tournament, eventually down the line." ..The Townies (14-3), played just seven due to health (Jawhari Dawan-Abdullah, stomach bug) and off the court issues (Gary Braham, suspension). But they saw all five of their regular starters reach double-figures, with senior point guard Rony Fernandez (26 points, four assists) leading the way. Senior forward Tyrik Jackson (12 points, 13 rebounds) came up big on the glass again, while Tyrese Hoxter (16 points, seven assists), Omar Orriols (13 points) and Iser Barnes (12) contributed some big shots from the perimeter to keep the defense stretched out. ..But early on, the Crusaders (12-2) gave them fits with the methodical way they broke through the Townie's 2-3 zone with some of the most disciplined and precise ball movement they'd seen in a while. Junior point guard Colin Richey (23 points) funneled the offense down to the baseline, finding a player planted right in the heart of the zone and kicking to either the baseline or either wing. ..Whitinsville shot nearly 40 percent from the field, getting good looks from the short side from Tyler VandenAkker (12 points, eight rebounds) and Jesse Dykstra. Grant Brown (10 points) came up with some big shots from the perimeter as well. .."We decided to extend a little bit more on the short corner, because they hit about four shots in a row from the short corner," Cardoso said. "We also decided to have the opposite guard extend even more on shooter No. 2 (Tim Dufficey). So we made some extensions in the second half, did a little better job -- not a great job, but it helped us get the victory." ..To start the fourth quarter, Barnes completed a 6-0 run by ripping the ball out of his defender's hands at midcourt and landing a breakaway layup. A few possessions later, Hoxter found Jackson underneath the rim for an easy tip-in and 68-59 advantage. ..Then with 1:37 to go, sophomore Taris Wilson hit the first of two monster breakaway slams, this one making it 76-63 to essentially put the game in hand. ..Hot from the field: The Townies outrebounded the Crusaders 16-7 in the final frame, giving way to many key transition points that helped ice the lead and the win. From the glass, WC still held a slim 35-33 advantage. ..But down at the other end, the Townies had a terrific night from the field, shooting nearly 58 percent overall. That was aided by a 7-for-17 effort from three-point range, including three 3's each from Fernandez and Orriols. ..Praise for Richey: Last season, New Mission head coach Cory McCarthy was throwing around high praise for the then-sophomore Richey, calling him "a suburban kid that plays urban". ..Consider Cardoso another Boston City League coach that's a fan. .."He's tough," Cardoso said. "He's one of the toughest guards coming out of his league, and I think he's going give a lot of teams problems in the state tournament, because how do you stop a kid like that?" ..Turning point? Following last season's loss to Charlestown in its home gym, WC coach Jeff Bajema greeted his players in the locker room and told them, "Guys, we can win states." ..Sure enough, the Crusaders never lost another game the rest of the way, picking up their first Division 3 state title since 2005 at the DCU Center in Worcester. After that game, Bajema spoke to reporters about how much the whitewashing by Charlestown seasoned them for what to expect in the state tournament. ..Given how much more competitive the Crusaders were this time around, could this be seen as another momentum shift? .."Hopefully, a game like this will lead us to better things," Bajema said. "But we've got a tough one Tuesday (against Holy Name), so we'll see."

I wanted to test out a technique that I had read about a while back, but never got around to trying: stitching multiple shots together on a crop sensor to get results similar to those from a larger format (referred to by many as the "brenizer method", as it was popularized by photographer Ryan Brenizer).
This shot is stitched together from 4 overlapping frames shot using a 40mm f2 lens on my GF1. The result is a wider field of view, but with the same degree of focus. Instead of an equivalent 80mm f4, this image is around 48mm f2.4 on a full frame sensor. To get such an image you'd need a 24mm f1.2 on m4/3. Maybe I should pick up the Panasonic 25mm f1.4, since that's pretty close!
