Maharashtra Govts Crackdown on Slums and Sleaze: Congress-NCP Dances To A Saffron Sena Tune! .
Here are some excerpts from a Hindustan Times interview with the NCPs RR Patil, Deputy CM and Home Minister of Maharashtra, who has recently banned dance bars in Mumbai as well as rural Maharashtra (a move hailed by the Shiv Sena as well): .
HT: What will the bar girls go if dance bars are banned; how will they earn a living? .
Patil: Papad bel sakte hain, patthar tod sakte hain, (they can roll out papads, they can break stones there are many forms of decent labour. .
HT: What about rehabilitation .
Patil: They are not entitled to that. Its like conceding a thiefs request to allow him to steal from homes because he is unskilled. .
According to Mr. Patil, women who dance in bars are corrupting the morality of innocent Maharashtrian youth. He echoes Shiv Sena sentiments when he brands these girls as a security threat, because, according to him, they are immoral, anti-national Nepalis and Bangladeshis, not good girls of aamchi Maharashtra ! .
Mr Patil, you say these girls do not deserve rehabilitation because they are no better than thieves. Far from being victims of poverty and exploitation, you feel that these women who dance for a living are guilty criminals, corrupting innocent youth and Maharashtrian Culture. Well, in the Mumbai ruled by your Congress-NCP Govt., what is the fate of women who roll out papads and break stones on the streets-do they get rehabilitation when your police throw them out of their homes ? Just a few weeks back, didnt your own Govt. demolish the slums in which thousands of such women labourers and their families lived, all in the name of beautifying Mumbai to look like Shanghai ?! Isnt it obscene when those young jobless workers, in frustration, join the communal lumpen brigades of the Shiv Sena and the RSS ? Isnt it obscene that the rich and famous -like Salman Khan and Bal Thackerays driver, can get away scot free after mowing down several pavement dwellers in Mumbai?
