Mark & Judy, Mary & Jack, and myself went to Chena Hotsprings on 5/12. The temp was 50+ when we left Fairbanks but it was about 43 when we left. I wansn't into getting wet - so I played photographer! The rock pool is set up just right - I was still able to converse and be close to all by following them around the pool and setting on the nearby rocks!

Pretty fitting, when I'm gambling my life away on exams right now.

District celebrates future leaders

By Daniel J. Calderón

USACE Los Angeles District

LOS ANGELES – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District celebrated a successful completion to another year of Leadership Development Program classes during a ceremony held at the District headquarters Sept. 12.

The ceremony was the culmination of LDP Level I and LDP Level II, both of which are meant to develop future leaders for the District.

“I think this went extremely well,” said David M. Boals, a District management analyst and the District’s Leadership Development Program Coordinator. “I was very pleased with the entire process.”

During the graduation event, LDP participants gave presentations for Col. Mark Toy, Los Angeles District Commander, and other senior leaders. Presentations ranged from proposed sponsorship packages so new employees would feel more welcomed into the District to a totally new way of distributing employees across the District to maximize productivity and increase quality of life.

“This is the most important thing I have to do all day today,” Toy said as he welcomed the graduates and assembled senior leaders. “I’m glad to see so many branch chiefs and division chiefs here. I know they realize the importance of this program and of your accomplishments.”

Students worked for the past nine months to reach the graduation. Each level of LDP covered leadership principles. The goal of LDP is to develop leaders at all levels, across all functional areas and career programs. Students begin at Tier I and can progress through each of higher levels. The program is also designed to meet the needs of prospective and current leaders at various stages of development. Leaders within the District and from around the Corps of Engineers come in to speak with students about various topics. Students also have the opportunity to learn about their strengths and how to apply those strengths in their regular work environment.

The Leadership Development Program is open to employees across the District. In Tier I, the ideal number of students is 10-12 and in Tier II, eight is the magic number. Each level does require some travel and a commitment of time outside regular work hours to ensure assignments are met. Tier III involves students in Division-level leadership and requires more of a time commitment from students and from their leadership. Boals said his only concern about the program is continued funding from across work groups.

Boals said the program has been in the District for six years. He credits former District commander, Col. Thomas Magness with revitalizing it. Boals said there were trends senior leaders in the District could see that warranted a return of the program. Trends included an increase in retirements and a loss of “corporate knowledge” and pass down from one generation of workers to another. With six years invested in future leaders, Boals said the program is paying off.

“When I see the people come out of the program, I don’t worry about our future,” he said. “I can see how strong our leaders will be in the future when I see the graduates we have in this program.”

Allison Lind, an LDP Tier I graduate, said she enjoyed her time in the program. As a relatively new member of the District, with less than five years with the Corps of Engineers, Lind said the program will help her focus her efforts to become a future leader in the Corps.

“I felt I needed to find my stride in becoming a leader here,” she said. “I feel the program helped me become more self aware of my strengths and leadership potential. I’m also more aware of the management and work styles of people around me. In the long run, that’s going to help me and I’m going to be able to help the Corps.”

The future leaders already have their near futures planned for them. Toy said the graduates’ first assignment is to attend the upcoming Senior Leadership Conference in November. There, Toy said the LDP graduates will help shape the policy for the District and work on ways to ensure they match up with the overall USACE and South Pacific Division goals.

“This year will be a celebration of senior leadership” Toy said as he discussed the speakers lined up for the three-day event. “You’re not just going to be attendees. You will all be developing the future of the District. Based on what I’ve seen today, I’m really excited about what you will be showing us at the conference.”

District employees interested in the program can look up requirements on the District Intranet site.

MOUNT PLEASANT (Dec. 12) -The Holy Door at Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Mount Pleasant was opened during Mass today.

On Tuesday, Dec.8, Pope Francis opened the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, inaugurating the Jubilee of Mercy. This weekend, Holy Doors will be opened in dioceses around the world, including the Diocese of Saginaw. Pilgrims will have an opportunity to pass through the Holy Door, thus expressing their willingness to “enter” into the mercy and love of God. There is a Holy Door at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption and at seven designated Sacred Heart Church locations throughout the diocese. The churches are located in different areas of the diocese to encourage all people to make the journey.

In the Diocese of Saginaw, Holy Doors will be opened this weekend (Dec. 12 and 13) at the following churches at the designated times (the Holy Doors will remain open throughout the remainder of the jubilee year) :

• Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, 615 Hoyt Ave., Saginaw (5:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13. The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will preside)

• Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Church, 302 S. Kinney Blvd., Mount Pleasant (5 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)

• Sacred Heart Church, St. Hubert Parish, 311 Whitelam St., Bad Axe (4:30 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)

• Sacred Heart Church, Ss. Francis & Clare Parish, 12157 Church St., Birch Run (4 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)

• Sacred Heart Church, St. Christopher Parish, 140 Atwood St., Caro (5 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)

• Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Parish, 300 N. Silverleaf St., Gladwin (5 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)

• Sacred Heart Church, Prince of Peace Parish, 2510 S. Fraser Rd., Kawkawlin (8:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13)

• Sacred Heart Church, St. John XXIII Parish, 445 S. Midland St., Merrill (9 a.m. Sunday Dec. 13)

The establishment of the Holy Doors traces its roots back to early Christians who used the practice as a public sign of penance before they could return to their faith community. Today, pilgrims who enter through these doors during a Holy Year are making a public acknowledgment of turning away from sin and a recommitment to their faith.

Sun 08.05.12 - The last time I shot a roll of film in the ADOX Golf, I by accident messed up all the settings on the lens mechanism. This roll was me resetting and trying to figure out the best shutter timing to f-stop to distance ratios. I am happy with the light in each of these photos, but the focus is off.

I don't have the rangefinder for this vintage camera, so all my focusing is guess work to the meter marks on the lens.

Kids making a living working with a troupe that arranges the 'Baraat' - an integral part of a North Indian Hindu wedding.

The groom's family and friends make up the Baraat convoy that travels on foot for around 1.5 - 2 km upto the venue of the wedding. The entire groom's family arrives in this grand fashion at the wedding venue where the bride's family awaits them. The groom rides a horse while his family and friends dance to the music played by the marching band through this journey.

The convoy halts every 50 metres and on every halt, friends and family of the groom celebrate by dancing fervidly to a couple of hindi songs, the most popular being Mithun da's - 'I am a disco dancer' !!

A lot of money is given out, actually thrown around as 'Inam' (prize). Members of the troupe sometimes tussle over the fallen money to claim it.

And amidst all the fervor were these kids... quietly going about their job carrying 'portable' lighting for the convoy...

Since 2008, Eli and Edythe Broad and the Broad Art Foundation had been considering different sites for a museum for the art collection. In November 2008, the news surfaced that Eli Broad had approached Beverly Hills about building his museum at the southeast corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard.[4] In January 2010, he revealed that he was considering a 10-acre parcel on the campus of West Los Angeles College just outside Culver City.[5] Meanwhile, in March 2010, the Santa Monica City Council approved an agreement in principle to lease the city-owned 2.5-acre parcel next to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium to Eli Broad for $1 a year for 99 years while also contributing $1 million toward design costs. Broad would have paid the rest, an estimated $50 million to $70 million.[6]

In August 2010, Eli Broad announced formally that he would build a museum in Downtown Los Angeles.[7] He agreed to pay $7.7 million for a 99-year lease. Officially characterized as a grant, the money subsidized affordable-housing units at The Emerson, a high-rise residential tower next to the museum.[8] The agreement also includes an $8.5-million government share of the cost of the museum's outdoor plaza and government payments of up to $30 million to reimburse Broad for building the museum's underground parking garage. Under that buy-back provision, the garage eventually will be government-owned.[8]

In an invited architectural competition for the project in 2010, six architects were asked to present preliminary designs. They included Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and his firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture; Swiss pair Herzog & de Meuron; Christian de Portzamparc from Paris; Japanese duo Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA; and Diller Scofidio + Renfro from New York.[9] Diller Scofidio + Renfro were eventually chosen to design the approximately 120,000-square-foot museum, which includes exhibition space, offices and a parking garage.[10][11]

In February 2015, Eli and Edythe Broad hosted a public preview of the new building, attracting some 3,500 visitors.[12]

The museum was opened by the Broads on September 20, 2015.[13] Celebrities in attendance included Bill Clinton, Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Perry, Heidi Klum, and Larry King, among others.[14] Wikipedia

The adoration of Our Lady in Mechelen goes back over 1000 years.

Whenever there was an outbreak of the black death or threat of war, a statue of the Virgin Maria was carried through the streets.

When this seemed to have a positive effect, the population promissed to have a procession every year. Since 1738, the religious procession of Our Lady (Hanswijkprocessie) is enlarged to form the ‘cavalcade’, a two and a half hour procession which includes over 2000 participants. This cavalcade is only organized once every 25 years

Veterinary medicine in China is, on the whole, in its infancy. Usually there aren't any private rooms, or very clear lines between the waiting room and the treatment room. Today, while at what is possibly Chengdu's top clinic, this little guy was getting a drip of some kind. The local vets used the newspaper (I think) to prevent him from getting to the drip. His owner sat by his side for hours just talking to him and giving him scritches. He was still there after three hours when I left with my ginger whingers.

Georgia State Capitol

On 3/22/12 The Center for Public Integrity listed Georgia as the most corrupt state in America. Note the following:

1. Georgia

> Overall grade: F (49%)

> Public access to information: F

> Legislative accountability: F

> Political financing: F

> Ethics enforcement agencies: F

Georgia has the worst levels of corruption risk and lack of accountability of any state in the country. The state scored a D or worse in 12 of the 14 categories. The state’s biggest problem is the absence of a strong ethics enforcement agency. Republican governor Sonny Perdue managed to get an ethics bill through the legislature, but by the time it passed, his proposals to ban gifts to state workers and clearly define appropriate campaign spending had been stripped out. According to State Integrity reporter Jim Walls, while Georgia has provisions to prevent certain kinds of corruption in campaign finance and lobbying, the state is full of unaddressed loopholes and lax enforcement. “About 2,000 Georgia officials, including one in five sitting legislators, have failed to pay penalties for filing their disclosures late, or not at all.”

Taken 19/08/12; The ‘Weymouth Seaside Express’ starts at Bristol Temple Meads and runs most Summer Sundays, although this year the service was suspended during the Olympics and Paralympics. These three snaps were taken during the Frome water stop, when the loco takes water from a Fire Brigade tender. On arrival at Weymouth the loco will propel the stock in Weymouth’s Jubilee Sidings and work tender first to Yeovil Junction for servicing and turning, before working the return trip.
