On May 12, the Gillings School's 78th Commencement Ceremony celebrated the Class of 2018! During the ceremony, more than 330 students were awarded degrees. Dr. Camara Phyllis Jones, the Commencement speaker, charged all in attendance to, “Be courageous, be unafraid of controversy and tell your truth.”
Ojochal is one of the rural communities closest to San Juan del Sur, but until recently it had no electricity. Originally we paid to have a Bicibomba (bicycle-powered rope-pump) installed. That’s what you see here, the kids all excited about running the bike and turning the handle to make the water flow.
But the rope-pump system failed—the well was too deep. So the Union Church of Waban joined forces with folks in Ojochal to install the first-ever photovoltaic-powered water pump in the region, and then everybody pitched in to dig a couple of kilometers of trenches and laid PVC piping with spigots for each house. That’s why the Union Church’s motto is “WE’RE THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THE AGUA IN NICARAGUA.” See photo below of everyone who worked on that project.
The girl in red sitting on the bicycle-pump’s seat is Luz Mary, Jose Adán Baltodano’s grand-daughter (see #21). Notice the elegant, sturdy platform that holds the water storage tank: the wood was milled by chainsaw and bolted together on location. I particularly like the late afternoon sun raking across from beyond the well.
Those are headless winged sphinxes on either side of this largest throne of Astarte extant, and the only one in situ. (I saw a few more in the National museum in Beirut.)
Veterinary medicine in China is, on the whole, in its infancy. Usually there aren't any private rooms, or very clear lines between the waiting room and the treatment room. Today, while at what is possibly Chengdu's top clinic, this little guy was getting a drip of some kind. The local vets used the newspaper (I think) to prevent him from getting to the drip. His owner sat by his side for hours just talking to him and giving him scritches. He was still there after three hours when I left with my ginger whingers.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur (Basilique du Sacré-Cœur), is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the defeat of France in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and the socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ.
The Sacré-Cœur Basilica was designed by Paul Abadie. Construction began in 1875 and was finished in 1914. It was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919.

Taken 19/08/12; The ‘Weymouth Seaside Express’ starts at Bristol Temple Meads and runs most Summer Sundays, although this year the service was suspended during the Olympics and Paralympics. These three snaps were taken during the Frome water stop, when the loco takes water from a Fire Brigade tender. On arrival at Weymouth the loco will propel the stock in Weymouth’s Jubilee Sidings and work tender first to Yeovil Junction for servicing and turning, before working the return trip.

The Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club promoted organ donation as one of the many things in tribute of the tragedy of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.
TGLN Advocate group - Life Donation Awareness Association (LDAA) led by Jessica Gold and Linda Draddy, set up an information table within short notice of the request that came in, just a day prior.
In the words of Jessica Gold ` Yesterday was AH-MAZING!!
We went with 300 ribbons and left with ZERO! We had some amazing conversations with the community. Some shared their own donation stories, their fears in registration/organ donation, we were able to correct some myths... all in all, an awesome night!!!!

Maurizio Cattelan: All is thus a full-scale admission of the inadvisability of viewing his work in the context of a conventional chronological retrospective. Characteristically, the artist resisted this model, creating instead a site-specific installation that cunningly celebrates its rebelliousness. The exhibition brings together virtually everything the artist has produced since 1989 and presents the works en masse, strung seemingly haphazardly from the oculus of the Guggenheim’s rotunda. Perversely encapsulating Cattelan’s career to date in an overly literal, three-dimensional catalogue raisonné, the installation lampoons the idea of comprehensiveness. The exhibition is an exercise in disrespect: the artist has hung up his work like laundry to dry. Like all of his individual objects, the new installation resonates with multiple interpretive valences. Cattelan has certainly used the motif of suspension before, most notably in the poetically elongated sculpture created from a taxidermied horse, Novecento (20th century, 1997), but here it takes on epic proportions. Hoisted by rope as if on a gallows, the objects explicitly reveal the undertone of death that pervades the artist’s work. In total, the installation looks like a mass execution, and constitutes, for its duration, an overarching, tragic artwork in its own right.
Hailed simultaneously as a provocateur, prankster, and tragic poet of our times, Maurizio Cattelan has created some of the most unforgettable images in recent contemporary art. His source materials range widely, from popular culture, history, and organized religion to a meditation on the self that is at once humorous and profound. Working in a vein that can be described as hyperrealist, Cattelan creates unsettlingly veristic sculptures that reveal contradictions at the core of today’s society. While bold and irreverent, the work is also deadly serious in its scathing critique of authority and the abuse of power.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (often referred to as "The Guggenheim") is a museum located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, United States.
It is the permanent home to a renowned collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it is one of the 20th century's most important architectural landmarks. The museum opened on October 21, 1959, ten years after the death of Solomon Guggenheim and six months after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright.
From 2005 to 2008 the museum underwent an extensive renovation.
The distinctive building, Wright's last major work, instantly polarized architecture critics upon completion, though today it is widely revered. From the street, the building looks like a white ribbon curled into a cylindrical stack, slightly wider at the top than the bottom. Its appearance is in sharp contrast to the more typically boxy Manhattan buildings that surround it, a fact relished by Wright who claimed that his museum would make the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art "look like a Protestant barn."
From Wikipedia
The Guggenheim Museum is an embodiment of Wright's attempts to render the inherent plasticity of organic forms in architecture. His inverted ziggurat (a stepped or winding pyramidal temple of Babylonian origin) dispensed with the conventional approach to museum design, which led visitors through a series of interconnected rooms and forced them to retrace their steps when exiting. Instead, Wright whisked people to the top of the building via elevator, and led them downward at a leisurely pace on the gentle slope of a continuous ramp. The galleries were divided like the membranes in citrus fruit, with self-contained yet interdependent sections. The open rotunda afforded viewers the unique possibility of seeing several bays of work on different levels simultaneously. The spiral design recalled a nautilus shell, with continuous spaces flowing freely one into another.

On July 4, 2011, we drove to the small community of Westvleteren, in rural West Flanders, to visit perhaps the most famous beer brewing Trappist abbey in the world: Abdij Sint-Sixtus.
Westvleteren 12, the flagship beer from Abdij Sint-Sixtus, has topped the "Best beer of the world" lists for a number of years, making it virtually impossible to buy because the monks of St. Sixtus refuses to increase production just to please the higher demand. To buy Westvleteren you basically have to order a case ahead of time, as this sign says (reserve at www.sintsixtus.be) and come, yourself, to pick it up between 2 pm and 5 pm on certain weekdays.
