“Less crime means fewer victims” says Chief Constable Colette Paul after Bedfordshire Police has once again seen reductions in crime rates in year ending June 2013 compared to 2011/12.
The figures published nationally this month (October) in England and Wales show Bedfordshire’s overall crime rate has again fallen, this time by 6% in the 12 month period to June 2013.
Commenting on the results Chief Constable Colette Paul said: “This is fantastic news for the people of Bedfordshire and for everyone at Bedfordshire Police who works so tirelessly to fight crime and protect the public. We cannot do this alone however so thanks also go to our partners and local authorities with whom we work together to build a safer Bedfordshire.
It is important to acknowledge that this achievement is against the backdrop of challenging funding cuts and is the result of the determination and ability shown by all our staff to find new and creative ways to meet these challenges. We have cut costs while improving our performance; less crime means fewer victims and that is something we should all be very proud of. I am not complacent though and together with Police and Crime Commissioner Olly Martins, it is important that we continue to encourage reporting of crime. This, coupled with seasonal variations, however, means a rise in crime in some areas but we believe this demonstrates an increased confidence and trust by the public we serve in coming forward and reporting it.
This is already reflected in the increased reporting of sexual offences, changes to such small numbers create significant percentage increases, but there are a number of reasons for this including the publicity surrounding Operation Yewtree (Jimmy Savile) and elsewhere the increase is the enforcement activity around soliciting and kerb crawling offences, which we have been focusing on, particularly in Luton. Here we have proactively targeted an issue causing community concern and this has resulted in a significant increase in offences being recorded and detected.
Above all we will continue to ensure our focus remains on victims of crime, while also protecting the wider public so they feel safe as they go about their day to day lives. We have some way to go with satisfying victims and there are of course still areas where we need to work even harder and be more creative with the resources we have to keep reducing crime.”
Overall the following figures have been recorded:
• A 9% reduction in Violence against the Person offences compared to a 3% reduction in England and Wales.
• An 18% reduction in the more serious Violence with Injury sub category, the second largest reduction in Violence with Injury in England and Wales.
• A 28% reduction in Robbery offences compared to a 13% reduction in England and Wales. This is the 6th largest reduction in England and Wales.
• A 6% reduction in Burglary Offences
• A 4% reduction in theft offences including a 7% reduction in shoplifting and a 10% reduction in theft from person offences.
• 7% of Bedfordshire residents experienced or witnessed drink related behaviour. This was significantly below the England and Wales rate of 10%
• 42% increase in sexual offences, although the actual number of crimes committed remains comparatively low with Bedfordshire experiencing the 8th lowest rate in England and Wales.
Bedfordshire’s overall crime rate for the period Bedfordshire was 56.6 crimes per 1000 population, below the England and Wales rate of 62.1 crimes per 1000 population.
At Bedfordshire Police our aim is "fighting crime, protecting the public."
We cover 477 square miles, serve a population of around 550,000 and employ in the region of 1,260 Police Officers, 950 police staff and 120 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). For more details about the force, visit our website www.bedfordshire.police.uk

An F/A-18C from Fighter Squadron Composite Twelve (VFC-12), known as the "Fighting Omars", blasts off during the 2011 NAS Oceana Airshow. VFC-12 is currently the Naval Reserve's premier adversary squadron providing threat tactics training to all Navy Fighter and Strike Fighter squadrons. A vital element in ensuring combat readiness to deploying squadrons, VFC-12 maintains its vigilance as the "Threat Experts" by providing graduate level threat air simulations and in-depth threat lectures.
The VFC-12 "Fighting Omars" mission is to provide tactical Dissimilar Air Combat Training for US Navy, Marine Corps and other aviation units when tasked. The Omar configured F/A-18 "Hornet" has the one-to-one thrust to weight ratio on "Bogey CAP" (combat air patrol) and the exceptional tactical performance present in today's threat arena.
The unique challenge of VFC-12's mission has made the Fighting Omars one of the most if not the most sought after aviation duty assignments in the Navy. Because of this distinction, only the best of the best fly as adversary instructor pilots in VFC-12. The squadron is made up of all "Cruise Veteran" F-14 or F/A-18 pilots hand picked for their tactical aerial acumen and are graduates of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN).
The Maryland National Guard Freestate Challenge Academy held their course completion ceremony for the 22 week residency phase for 107 cadets of class #45 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground’s post theater on Saturday, Dec., 12.
The Academy is a two-phased 17-month intervention program for underemployed, drug-free, “at-risk” high school dropouts from the state of Maryland between 16-18 years of age. Following graduation from the resident phase, the cadets are mentored for an additional 12 months, during which time they are placed into jobs, continue their higher education, or vocational trades training or enter the military.
“Whether you realize it or not, you have turned a major corner on this journey called life,” said Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford the keynote speaker to the cadets. “You have been exposed to things and learned lessons of life that will keep you in good stead for the rest of your lives if you have the discipline to observe them.”
The mission of the Academy is to intervene in and reclaim the lives of at-risk youth and to produce graduates with the values, skills, education and self-discipline needed to succeed as adults.
The students were brought into a structured and highly disciplined quasi-military academic setting that builds confidence and self-esteem to become productive and contributing members of our society. Cadets attend academic classes to prepare them for the test for the General Education Development (GED) credential and Maryland High School Diploma. The program is currently funded by National Guard Bureau and the State of Maryland (75/25 percent split).
This year marked the 22nd anniversary of the program and has been another extremely successful year for the academy. More than 4,000 cadets have graduated since the Academy’s beginning in 1993.

Joe Paterno, 1926-2012
Joe Paterno died on January 22, 2012 from complications of Lung Cancer. He was 85.
"JoePa" had 409 wins in 46 seasons and two national championships.
He racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football.
Paterno guided five teams to unbeaten, untied seasons.
With his thick glasses, rolled up khakis and white socks, Paterno was synonymous with Penn State and was seen in many ways as the archetypal football coach.
Joe's son Scott announced Nov.18th, 2011 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.
Joe has been in the hospital since Jan.13th, 2012 for observation for what his family had called minor complications from his cancer treatments. Not long before that, he conducted his only interview since losing his job, with The Washington Post. Paterno was described as frail then and wearing a wig. The second half of the two-day interview was conducted by his bedside.

The scalloped side air intakes are a homage to those found on the 308 GTB,[12] and are divided by a central partition. Air entering the top intake is partially directed into the turbocharger compressor intake, while the rest is directed through the rear of the car and exits alongside the rear lights, increasing air pressure behind the car in order to reduce aerodynamic drag. Airflow entering the lower intake is directed towards the intercoolers in order to cool the intake charge.[11]
The Ferrari 488 (Tipo F142M) is a mid-engined sports car produced by the Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari, introduced in 2015 to replace the previous 458.
It is powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8, smaller in displacement and higher in output than the naturally aspirated engine it supersedes.
Engine
The 488 GTB is powered by a 3904cc (488cc per cylinder, thus the name) all-aluminium dry sump unit of the Ferrari F154 engine family.[3] Turbocharged with two parallel ball-bearing twin-scroll turbochargers supplied by IHI and two air-to-air intercoolers, the compressor wheels are made of low-density TiAl alloy often used in jet engines to reduce inertia and resist high temperatures within the turbocharger. The engine produces 670 PS (493 kW; 661 hp) at 8,000 rpm and 760 N·m (561 lb·ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm.[4] This results in a specific power output of 126.3 kW (171.7 PS; 169.4 hp) per litre and specific torque output of 194.8 N·m (144 lbf·ft) per litre, both records for a Ferrari car.
Transmission
The only available transmission for the 488 is an automated manual dual-clutch 7-speed F1 gearbox manufactured for Ferrari by GETRAG, based on the gearbox used in the 458.[5]
Handling
Improved carbon-ceramic brakes are supplied on the 488, derived from technology used in LaFerrari, constructed with new materials that reduce the time needed to achieve optimum operating temperature. Disc sizes are 398 mm at the front, and 360 mm at the rear. These advancements reportedly reduce stopping distances by 9% over the 458.[5]
A new 5-spoke alloy wheel was designed for the 488, measuring 51 centimetres (20 in)front and rear. Front tires measure 245/35 with rears 305/30.[3]
Design
The body of the 488 has been designed to increase downforce by 50% over the 458 while reducing aerodynamic drag.[10] A new front double splitter increases radiator cooling while a newly designed blown rear spoiler (actually a slotted flap) integrated into the rear decklid and bumper increases downforce without requiring a raised wing.[11] The central "Aero Pillar" deflects air under the flat body of the car while two vents in the bonnet provide an exit for air from the dual intakes of the front bumper, further reducing air pressure over the front of the car.[12]
Underbody vortex generators work to reduce air pressure beneath the car thereby increasing overall downforce. A larger rear diffuser works to increase the velocity of air exiting the underbody to further lower air pressure, in conjunction with active aerodynamic variable flaps that both reduce drag and increase downforce as controlled by a microprocessor.[11] The increased size of the diffuser over the previous 458 requires the twin exhausts of the 488 to be positioned higher in the rear bumper for clearance.[12]

Delaveaga's hole 12 is affectionately known as the "Refrigerator Hole" because of the refrigerator that was dumped here prior to the installation of the course.
Excerpt nr 12 from ‘A special night.’, a story that I wrote about a night that Paul and I did a reportage on SHRIMPING.
...Danny and Sylvain were still hard at work.
Sylvain rinsed containers, hosed the deck, kept an eye on the stove, boiling with their last catch of shrimps.
I found Danny, next to the wheel house, sifting through the cooling shrimps. I went up and asked if I could join him.
Sifting was done in a wooden tray with a mesh bottom, strapped in, so that it could gently rock back and forth, getting rid of tiny shells, fish and crabs. The rest was hand picked by us. He taught me a bit more about sea-life and told some stories.
Gradually the air warmed up, the light becoming brighter.
The end of a hard night, the start of a glorious day.
Here you have an overview, I thought it would be interesting to show the different stages!
On Belgian boats the shrimps are boiled on board in between each trek. Most of those boats don't have refrigeration, but raw shrimps must never be put onto melting ice anyway, so they'd have to be packed instantly. These fishermen prefer the old method.
Thanx and have a great day, Magda (*_*)
MOUNT PLEASANT (Dec. 12) -The Holy Door at Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Mount Pleasant was opened during Mass today.
On Tuesday, Dec.8, Pope Francis opened the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, inaugurating the Jubilee of Mercy. This weekend, Holy Doors will be opened in dioceses around the world, including the Diocese of Saginaw. Pilgrims will have an opportunity to pass through the Holy Door, thus expressing their willingness to “enter” into the mercy and love of God. There is a Holy Door at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption and at seven designated Sacred Heart Church locations throughout the diocese. The churches are located in different areas of the diocese to encourage all people to make the journey.
In the Diocese of Saginaw, Holy Doors will be opened this weekend (Dec. 12 and 13) at the following churches at the designated times (the Holy Doors will remain open throughout the remainder of the jubilee year) :
• Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, 615 Hoyt Ave., Saginaw (5:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 13. The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, will preside)
• Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Church, 302 S. Kinney Blvd., Mount Pleasant (5 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)
• Sacred Heart Church, St. Hubert Parish, 311 Whitelam St., Bad Axe (4:30 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)
• Sacred Heart Church, Ss. Francis & Clare Parish, 12157 Church St., Birch Run (4 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)
• Sacred Heart Church, St. Christopher Parish, 140 Atwood St., Caro (5 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)
• Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Parish, 300 N. Silverleaf St., Gladwin (5 p.m. Saturday Vigil, Dec. 12)
• Sacred Heart Church, Prince of Peace Parish, 2510 S. Fraser Rd., Kawkawlin (8:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13)
• Sacred Heart Church, St. John XXIII Parish, 445 S. Midland St., Merrill (9 a.m. Sunday Dec. 13)
The establishment of the Holy Doors traces its roots back to early Christians who used the practice as a public sign of penance before they could return to their faith community. Today, pilgrims who enter through these doors during a Holy Year are making a public acknowledgment of turning away from sin and a recommitment to their faith.
More information about the Year of Mercy and about indulgences can be found at: www.saginaw.org
