Replacing an earlier scanned photo with a better version 02-Apr-17.

First flown with the Airbus test registration F-WZEI, this aircraft was delivered to Aviafin SA and leased to SABENA Belgian World Airlines as OO-SCA in Feb-84. It was sold to SABENA in Aug-94 then sold to ILFC International Lease Finance Corporation in Feb-97 and leased back to SABENA.

The aircraft was returned to ILFC in Sep-97 and stored. It was re-registered N451FE in Nov-97 and remained stored until it was sold to FedEx Federal Express in Apr-98.

The aircraft was converted to freighter configuration with a main-deck cargo door in Nov-98. It was withdrawn from service at the end of Apr-10 and permanently retired at Victorville, CA, USA. It was noted still stored at Victorville in Oct-12. The registration was finally cancelled in Mar-13.

American actress Jane Fonda (1937) is a two-time Academy Award winner for the crime thriller Klute (1971) and the Vietnam drama Coming Home (1978). Roger Vadim's psychedelic Science Fiction spoof Barbarella (1968) made her one of the icons of the European cinema of the 1960s. In 2014, she received the American Film Institute AFI Life Achievement Award.

Jane Fonda was born Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda in New York in 1937. She was the daughter of actor Henry Fonda and the Canadian-born socialite Frances Ford Brokaw, née Seymour. She has a brother, actor Peter Fonda, and a maternal half-sister, Frances. Her mother committed suicide when Jane was 12. The suicide was kept from her as a teenager, and she was told that her mother had died of heart failure. Fonda learned the truth months later while leafing through a movie magazine in art class at Vassar. Although she initially showed little inclination to follow her father's trade, she was prompted by director Joshua Logan to appear with her father in the 1954 Omaha Community Theatre production of The Country Girl. Before starting her acting career, Fonda was a fashion model, gracing the cover of Vogue twice. In 1958, she met Lee Strasberg and she went to study acting in earnest at the Actors Studio. In 1960, she made her Broadway debut in the play There Was a Little Girl, for which she received the first of two Tony Award nominations. Later the same year, she made her screen debut in the romantic comedy Tall Story (Joshua Logan, 1960), in which she recreated one of her Broadway roles as a college cheerleader pursuing a basketball star, played by Anthony Perkins. In Walk on the Wild Side (Edward Dmytryk, 1962), she played a prostitute and earned a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. She rose to fame in such films as Period of Adjustment (George Roy Hill, 1962), Sunday in New York (Peter Tewksbury, 1963), Cat Ballou (Elliot Silverstein, 1965) opposite Lee Marvin, and Barefoot in the Park (Gene Saks, 1967), co-starring Robert Redford. Fonda also worked in France. She appeared opposite Alain Delon in the delightful sexy thriller Les félins/Joy House (René Clément, 1964). That same year, she was among the all-star cast of the anthology film La Ronde/Circle of Love (Roger Vadim, 1964), based on the classic Austrian novel Der Reigen by Arthur Schnitzler. Fonda astonished everyone (none as much as her father) by becoming one of the first major American actresses to appear nude in a foreign film. Director Roger Vadim became her first husband in 1965. He featured her as a sex goddess in his next films, La curée/Tears of Rapture (Roger Vadim, 1966) with Michel Piccoli, and a segment of the anthology film Histoires extraordinaires/Spirits of the Dead (Federico Fellini, Louis Malle, Roger Vadim, 1968), an adaptation of three horror stories by Edgar Allan Poe. In Vadim's segment, Metzgernstein, Fonda played a decadent contessa who falls in love with her pure cousin (the role of her brother Peter Fonda). In 1968, Jane featured in the title role in Vadim's psychedelic SF spoof Barbarella, establishing her status as a sex symbol. Despite the striptease-in-vacuum beginning and the kinky costumes, Barbarella is now a rather innocent and campy film. Brian J. Dillard at AllMovie: "Although it often pops up on 'Worst Movies Ever' lists, it's something of a treat if one approaches it with the right attitude. From the eye-popping plasticity of the production design to the gentle grooviness of the Bob Crewe Generation's campy lounge soundtrack, Barbarella is a defiantly trivial film. But Fonda's studied vacuity, Anita Pallenberg's kinky glamour, and John Phillip Law's bronzed pecs and hippie truisms keep things sexy, sweet, and funny. Fonda has spent more than three decades trying to live down the zero-gee peep show that opens the film, but besides a few bare breasts and countless double entendres, nothing here crosses the line between erotic comedy and pornography."A turning point in her career was the American social drama They Shoot Horses, Don't They (Sydney Pollack, 1969). She played one of the contenders in a desperate dance marathon in 1932, during the Great Depression. Fonda herself considers They Shoot Horses, Don't They? as one of her best films. She went on to win the Best Actress Oscar for the crime thriller Klute (Alan J. Pakula, 1971). In France, Fonda next starred as a reporter alongside Yves Montand in Tout Va Bien (Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin, 1972). A year later, she divorced from Vadim.

Jane Fonda is a seven-time Academy Award nominee. She won her second Best Actress Oscar for the Vietnam drama Coming Home (1978). Her other nominations were for her portrayal of the playwright Lillian Hellman in Julia (Fred Zinnemann, 1977), The China Syndrome (James Bridges, 1979) opposite Michael Douglas, On Golden Pond (Mark Rydell, 1981) with Katherine Hepburn and her father Henry Fonda, and The Morning After (Sidney Lumet, 1986) with Jeff Bridges. In 1982, Jane Fonda released her first exercise video, Jane Fonda's Workout, which became the highest-selling video of the time. It would be the first of the 22 workout videos she released over the next 13 years, selling over 17 million copies. Divorced from her second husband, the politician Tom Hayden in 1990, she married media mogul Ted Turner in 1991 and retired from acting. Divorced from Turner in 2001, she returned to acting with her first film in 15 years with the comedy Monster in Law (Robert Luketic, 2005) opposite Jennifer Lopez. Subsequent films have included Georgia Rule (Garry Marshall, 2007) with Lindsay Lohan, the French drama Et si on vivait tous ensemble?/All Together (Stéphane Robelin, 2011), The Butler (Lee Daniels, 2013) as First Lady Nancy Reagan, and This Is Where I Leave You (Shawn Levy, 2014). In 2009, she returned to Broadway after a 45-year absence, in the play '33 Variations', which earned her a Tony Award nomination, while her recurring role in the HBO drama series The Newsroom (2012-2014), earned her two Emmy Award nominations. She also released another five exercise videos between 2010 and 2012. Jane Fonda has been an activist for many political causes. Her counterculture-era opposition to the Vietnam War included her being photographed sitting on an anti-aircraft battery on a 1972 visit to Hanoi, which was very controversial. She has also protested the Iraq War and violence against women and describes herself as a feminist. In 2005, she, Robin Morgan and Gloria Steinem co-founded the Women's Media Center, an organization that works to amplify the voices of women in the media through advocacy, media and leadership training, and the creation of original content. Fonda currently serves on the board of the organisation. Jane Fonda published the autobiography My Life So Far in 2005. In 2011, she published a second memoir, Prime Time. She has two children, daughter Vanessa Vadim (1968) with Roger Vadim, and Troy O'Donovan Hayden (aka Troy Garity) (1973) with Tom Hayden. In the past decade, Jane Fonda appeared in several new films and series. A highlight was Youth (2015), directed by Paolo Sorrentino and starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel.

On December 12 the Ambassador, along with Economic Counselor Robert Forden and Sr. Commercial Attaché Jonathan Heimer, visited Tefen, Israel to learn more about the life and work of Mr. Stef Wertheimer and his company ISCAR, bought in 2006 by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. Mr. Wertheimer also led the Ambassador on a tour of his industrial parks in Tefen and Lavon and described his ideas for peace and coexistence through economic development and job creation. Mr. Wertheimer’s industrial parks (six total in Israel with a new one under construction in Nazareth) aim to provide an atmosphere of inclusion and equal opportunity for both Arabs and Jews. The industrial parks are modern and organized to provide training facilities, restaurants, museums, and a nurturing environment for resident companies and employees. The Ambassador was treated to tours of several of the companies at the industrial parks including modern manufacturing facilities and Safta Gamila, a maker of all natural soaps. The tour also included several museums and educational facilities for children at the Tefen Industrial Park.

Taken 23/03/12: The Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway (DN&SR) reached Winchester by 1885 and as a consequence the London and South Western Railway (L&SWR) built a link from the DN&SR’s Winchester (Chesil) station to meet their Waterloo-Southampton line at Shawford Junction. W.L.Galbraith, the LSWR’s Consulting Engineer, was responsible for building the viaduct that carried the line across the River Itchen and the surrounding water meadows. The viaduct was built of concrete with brick facing. The line was opened in October 1891 and was worked by the LSWR from Southampton to Winchester Chesil station. The Great Western Railway (GWR) took over the haulage north to Newbury & Didcot. After an important role in the build-up to D-Day, closure to passenger traffic eventually came in March 1960. Freight services lingered on into the mid 1960’s when the line closed to all traffic For more about the preservation of the Viaduct to date and future plans, please see:

Later this month, Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi will receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their work promoting children’s rights, including the right of girls around the world to get an education. These two exemplify local leadership at its best, and serve as powerful examples of the role community-led solutions play in the complicated work of mobilizing for children’s rights. Local leaders can rally their neighbors, embrace the nuances of local culture, and create change in a way that works for the whole community. As places around the world seek to improve girls’ education and strengthen their economies, governments, and societies, supporting and listening to local leaders, including community-based solutions to complex barriers, will be critical.

On December 12, the Center for Universal Education at Brookings hosted a discussion on how local leadership and community-based solutions can help advance girls’ education across the world. An opening panel discussed the status of girls’ education globally, highlighting where progress has been made and challenges remain, and how supporting local leaders can play a catalytic role in policy change at global, regional, and national levels. Following this, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama gave keynote remarks on community-based solutions in girls’ education. Mrs. Obama’s address will be followed by a panel discussion featuring experts in the field on the role of community-based solutions in advancing girls’ education.

Federal programs focus on Los Angeles River

By Dave Palmer

LOS ANGELES -- Col. Mike Wehr, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Pacific Division and Col. Mark Toy District commander participated in the launch ceremony for the Los Angeles River Watershed Project held at North Atwater Park on Jan. 12.

The Los Angeles River was identified in 2010 as a priority by the Obama administration under the America’s Great Outdoors initiative and is now one of seven pilot cities for the Urban Waters Federal Partnership.

“We are grateful that the Obama administration has made the LA River a priority through America’s Great Outdoors and the Urban Waters Federal Partnership,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “By working together, we can create an emerald necklace of parks, walkways, and bike paths that will protect the river’s environmental integrity and promote access and economic growth for all Angelenos.”

Representing the Obama administration, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar joined Rep. Lucille Royball-Allard, Rep. Adam Schiff, Councilman Ed Reyes and other key stakeholders in celebrating the selection of the Los Angeles River Watershed as a priority project under the President’s UWFP.

“Today we are celebrating the partnerships that are transforming the Los Angeles River watershed into a national symbol of how once-neglected urban waterways can be cleaned up and restored to improve the quality of life and boost the economy in America’s communities,” said Salazar. “Once known for pollution and poverty, these watersheds can become model urban parks cherished for their trails and access to river recreation.”

Under the purview of 11 federal agencies, UWFP is designed to stimulate regional and local economies by creating jobs and improving quality of life in under-served communities across the nation.

“Water is the lifeblood of our communities and we must care for our watersheds and urban waterways around the nation,” said Salazar. “Through this partnership and President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative, Interior is committed to increasing public access to river resources, helping restore and protect habitat and wildlife, educating and employing our youth, and assessing and helping safeguard water quality.”

These programs will greatly benefit the vision laid out in the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. Adopted in 2007, it offers the Los Angeles River as one of the greatest opportunities to revitalize the physical health of communities and the City as a whole.

“The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a fully committed partner in Los Angeles River revitalization efforts, including the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan,” said Toy.

The District will continue to provide engineering services, research and technical support to stakeholders during the planning, design, construction and operation of water resources and associated environmental infrastructure throughout the Los Angeles River Watershed Project.

A combination of sunshine emerging through a light misty rain has given this kereru's feathers a special sparkling quality.

Picyured feeding on tree lucern, mid winter, Zealandia wildlife sanctuary.

Kereru, the New Zealand Pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) is a bird endemic to New Zealand. Māori call it Kererū in most of the country but kūkupa and kūkū in some parts of the North Island, particularly in Northland. New Zealand pigeons are commonly called wood pigeons but are not the same as the Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) which is a member of a different genus.

The kererū belongs to the family Columbidae, and the subfamily Treroninae, which is found throughout Southeast Asia, Malaya, Africa and New Zealand. The members of this subfamily feed largely on fruits, mainly drupes. New Zealand Pigeons are members of the pigeon genus Hemiphaga (Bonaparte, 1854), which is endemic to the New Zealand archipelago and Norfolk Island. However recently a Hemiphaga bone was found on Raoul Island. The Parea or Chatham Island Pigeon (Hemiphaga chathamensis) is traditionally considered a subspecies of the Kererū, but is here treated as a separate species.

The New Zealand Pigeon is a large (550 to 850 g) arboreal fruit-pigeon found in forests from Northland to Stewart Island/Rakiura, ranging in habitats from coastal to montane. The general morphology is that of a typical pigeon, in that it has a relatively small head, a straight soft-based bill and loosely attached feathers. It also displays typical pigeon behaviour, which includes drinking by suction, a wing-threat display, hitting with the wing when threatened, a diving display flight, a ‘bowing’ display, ritualised preening and ‘billing’ during courtship. New Zealand Pigeons build flimsy, shallow, twiggy nests and feed crop milk to hatchlings.

The New Zealand Pigeon grows to some 51 cm (20 inches) in length and 650 g in weight. The head, throat and wings are generally a shiny green-purple colour, but with a bronze tinge to the feathers. The breast is typically white and the bill red with an orange-ish tip. The feet and eyes are red. Juveniles have a similar colouration but are generally paler with dull colours for the beak, eyes and feet and a shorter tail.

The New Zealand Pigeons make occasional soft coo sounds (hence the onomatopoeic names), and their wings make a very distinctive "whooshing" sound as they fly. The bird's flight is also very distinctive. Birds will often ascend slowly before making impressively steep parabolic dives; it is thought that this behaviour is often associated with nesting, or nest failure

The New Zealand Pigeons are commonly regarded as frugivorous, primarily eating fruits from native trees. They play an important ecological role, as they are the only birds capable of eating the largest native fruits and drupes (those with smallest diameter greater than 1 cm), such as those of the taraire, and thus spreading the seeds intact. While fruit comprises the major part of their diets, the New Zealand Pigeon also browses on leaves and buds, especially nitrogen rich foliage during breeding. One of their favorite leaves to eat is from an introduced plant, the common plum tree. The diet changes seasonally as the availability of fruit changes, and leaves can comprise the major part of the diet at certain times of the year, such as when there is little fruit around.

Breeding generally depends on the occurrence of ripe fruit, which varies seasonally, annually (good years and bad years), and by location. New Zealand Pigeons, like other frugivorous pigeons, feed on many species with tropical affinities, including the Lauraceae and Arecaceae but live in the temperate forest of New Zealand and also feed on podocarp species, thought to be elements of Gondwana, such as miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea) and Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides).[10][11][13][12] The more tropical tree species are restricted to the warmer northern half of the North Island, and in these regions pigeons can nest all year round, except when moulting between March and May, provided enough fruit is available. Further south many tropical tree species are missing and in these areas breeding usually occurs between October (early spring) and April (late summer/early autumn), again depending on fruit availability.

New Zealand Pigeons nest in trees, laying a single egg, in a flimsy nest constructed of a few twigs thrown together. The egg is incubated for 28 days. The young bird then takes another 36 days to fledge. In seasons of plentiful fruit the pigeons can successfully nest up to four times.

The population of the New Zealand Pigeon declined considerably after the arrival of humans in New Zealand, and this trend continues, especially in the North Island, but is still relatively common in the west of the South Island and in coastal Otago. They are commonly found in native forests (lowlands in particular), scrub, rural and city gardens and parks.

The introduced Australian common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) and introduced species of rats — mainly the ship or black rat (Rattus rattus) but also the kiore or Polynesian rat (Rattus exulans) and brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) — have significantly reduced the amount of fruit available for pigeons and other native birds and also prey on eggs and nestlings.

Pigeon populations are under also threat from hunting, habitat degradation and poor reproductive success. Pigeons were very numerous until about the 1860s and large flocks used to congregate in fruiting trees to feed. Restrictions on the shooting of pigeons were enacted as early as 1864, with total protection since 1921, although the enforcement against hunting was not consistent. Some Māori protested, claiming a traditional right to hunt the pigeon.

Wynarka is a very small settlement in South Australia 75 miles southeast of Adelaide on the B55, and 16 miles from Karoonda: it lies within the District Council of Karoonda East Murray.

The government town was proclaimed 9 January 1913 in the Hundred of Hooper.

Not easily seen, the township emerges after a turn off the highway. Few homes remain, one is in the former institute built in 1923 opposite the railway station (on the Loxton line).

School was held in the first Methodist Church from 1913 until the institute opened where it was held until 1940.

There is a disused Methodist Church c1971.

On the opposite side of the highway is a memorial celebrating the first Methodist service held in the Hundred of Hooper.

The first Methodist Church at Wynarka was dismantled in 1989 and removed to Karoonda. It was restored and placed in the Karoonda Pioneer Park. As an historical building there it was opened by Mrs Dorothy Blacket on Federation Sunday 21 October 2001.

OPENING OF NEW CHURCH AT WYNARKA

About twenty miles from Tailem Bend, on the newly-constructed Brown's Well line, one comes to the little siding at Wynarka. A passer-by looking at the surrounding country would be impressed with its seeming loneliness and its vast stretches of uncultivated land. When we remember that two years ago it was a weary sea of green mallee one cannot but realize that the settlers have not been idle. Neither has the Methodist Church.

About two years ago the first service was conducted near the "bore" in the open air by the Rev John Blacket. From that time on services were held once a month by the minister from Tailem Bend, until in July, 1912, a home missionary was appointed and five additional preaching-places have been taken up.

On October 6, 1912, the first anniversary services were held in a shed kindly lent by Mr Chenoweth, conducted by the Home Missionary Secretary, and at the close steps were taken to provide for the collecting of subscriptions and the erection of a Methodist hall. Two choice blocks of land were given by the Rev John Blacket and Mr E B Colton.

On Sunday, October 12, the second anniversary was held in the newly erected building. This is of iron and wood, and was erected by the people themselves under the supervision of Mr J J Chenoweth. The preacher for the day was the Rev John Blacket. The services were well attended. Musical selections were rendered by the choir, under the leadership of Mr W J Murphy, with Miss R Laurie as organist. The organ was kindly lent by Mr Chenoweth.

On Tuesday afternoon, in spite of the rain which fell heavily for some hours, a tea meeting was held—the first in the district. A public meeting followed, at which about one hundred people attended. The chair was taken by Mr E B Colton. Music was provided by the choir, and addresses delivered by the Revs J Blacket and C J Perry. Thanks were voiced by the home missionary, Mr V H Goldrey, and Mr S Lockier. Supper was handed round, and highly satisfactory and thoroughly enjoyable opening services came to an end.

Wynarka October 18

There was a large gathering of settlers at the opening of the local Methodist Hall on Sunday, October 12.

Mr J J Chenoweth was asked to superintend the work. A working bee was formed and deserve every credit for their enterprise in erecting such a fine building. The young ladies provided afternoon tea each day.

The lamps to light the building were presented by Mrs Pitt, of Payneham. [Ref: Chronicle (Adelaide) 1-11-1913]

Wynarka Harvest Thanksgiving Services were held on 11th inst, at 3pm and 7.30 pm. Our pastor, Rev Stan Forth, preached appropriate and inspiring sermons at both services. Special anthems were rendered by the choir.

At the conclusion of the afternoon service the congregation adjourned to the spot where the first service held in Wynarka was conducted by the late Rev John Blacket in 1911.

Three years, ago a gum tree was planted to commemorate the spot. The trustees of the Wynarka Methodist Church decided to hand over the piece of ground which has been railed around the tree, to the Karoonda District Council.

Rev Stan Forth conducted a short dedicatory ceremony, after which he officially handed over the sacred piece of ground to the Council, which was represented at the service by Councillors A Hood and Miell.

Councillor Hood, in replying on behalf of the Council, thanked the trustees and assured them that as long as he was resident here, the tree would be well tended and cared for, and he hoped that in years to come, when the tree spreads its welcome shade, that many weary teamsters would find rest for themselves and their horses as they journey to the bore, within a few yards of the tree, for water.

On Saturday, 3rd inst the Methodist Ladies' Guild held an anniversary social, a special feature of the occasion being a visit from Miss Kate Cocks, MBE.

Rev Stan Forth presided and introduced the visitor, whose name has become a household word throughout the State.

Miss Cocks' address was educational as well as spiritually uplifting. During the evening Mrs. J. Murphy, past secretary of the Guild for a number of years, made a presentation to our president, Mrs J Boyce, who has held that office for nine years.

On Sunday the services were continued, when in the afternoon Miss Cocks preached the sermon.

A donation was given Miss Cocks from the Church for her work at the Babies' Home in Brighton. [Ref: Australian Christian Commonwealth 8-3-1940]

Nineteen new members of the Class of 2020 were celebrated and honored at Ruby Van Meter School on Friday, June 12. The Yakovlev Yak-3 (Russian: Яковлев Як-3) was a single-engine, single-seat World War II Soviet fighter. Robust and easy to maintain, it was much liked by both pilots and ground crew. One of the smallest and lightest combat fighters fielded by any combatant during the war, its high power-to-weight ratio gave it excellent performance and it proved to be a formidable dogfighter.

The origins of the Yak-3 went back to 1941 when the I-30 prototype was offered along with the I-26 (Yak-1) as an alternative design. The I-30, powered by a Klimov M-105P engine, was of all-metal construction, using a wing with dihedral on the outer panels. Like the early Yak-1, it had a 20 mm (0.79 in) ShVAK cannon firing through the hollow-driveshaft nose spinner as a motornaya pushka (моторная пушка - Literally: 'Motor Cannon'), twin 7.62 mm (0.300 in) synchronized ShKAS machine guns in cowling mounts and a ShVAK cannon in each wing.

During the Battle of Stalingrad, Luftwaffe fighters exhibited significant speed, climb rate, and armament advantages over those of the VVS. The Yak-1 then in service was understood to be in urgent need of a modernization were it to fight on equal footing against the latest models of German fighters, as well as better energy retention and higher firepower.

Then, in 1943, a group of designers headed by Alexander Sergeyevich Yakovlev designed the Yak-3, a further development of the proven Yak-1 aimed at improving survivability, flight characteristics and firepower, which required a lower weight, a higher-power engine and therefore, faster speed.

The first of two prototypes had a slatted wing to improve handling and short-field performance while the second prototype had a wooden wing without slats in order to simplify production and save aluminium. The second prototype crashed during flight tests and was written off. Although there were plans to put the Yak-3 into production, the scarcity of aviation aluminium and the pressure of the Nazi invasion led to work on the first Yak-3 being abandoned in late 1941.

In between 1942 and 1943, Yakovlev built the Yak-1M, a prototype that would ultimately lead to the Yak-3, coupled with the VK-105PF2, the latest iteration of the VK-105 engine family, where "P" indicated support for a motornaya pushka - an autocannon that fires between the engine banks, through the hollow propeller shaft - mounting. It incorporated a wing of similar design but with smaller surface area (17.15 to 14.85 m2 (184.6 to 159.8 sq ft)), and had further aerodynamic refinements, like the new placement of the oil radiator, from the chin to the wing roots (one of the visual differences with the Yak-1, -7, -9). A second Yak-1M (originally meant as a "backup") prototype was constructed later that year, differing from the first aircraft in that it had plywood instead of fabric covering of the rear fuselage, mastless radio antenna, reflector gunsight and improved armour and engine cooling.

After the VK-105PF2 engine received a boost from a manifold pressure of 1050 mmHg to 1100 mmHg, additional tests were needed to determine how it impacted the flight characteristics of the Yak-3. State trials revealed that this boost reduced the time needed to reach 5,000 m (16,000 ft) by 0.1 seconds, the takeoff run by 15 m (49 ft), altitude gain in a combat loop by 50 m (160 ft), and speed below 2,400 m (7,900 ft) by 5–6 km/h (3–4 mph).

The chief test pilot for the project Petr Mikhailovich Stefanovskiy was so impressed with the new aircraft that he recommended that it should completely replace the Yak-1 and Yak-7 with only the Yak-9 retained in production for further work with the Klimov VK-107 engine. The new fighter, designated the Yak-3, entered service in 1944, later than the Yak-9 despite the lower designation number, and by mid-1946 4,848 had been built.

The designation Yak-3 was also used for other Yakovlev projects – a proposed but never built, heavy twin-engine fighter and the Yakovlev Yak-7A.

The first 197 Yak-3 were lightly armed with a single motornaya pushka-mount 20 mm (0.79 in) ShVAK cannon and one 12.7 mm (0.50 in) UBS synchronized machine gun, with subsequent aircraft receiving a second UBS for a weight of fire of 2.72 kg (6.0 lb) per second using high-explosive ammunition. All armament was installed close to the axis of the aircraft with a cannon mounted in the engine "vee" firing through the propeller boss, synchronised machine guns in the fuselage, helping accuracy and leaving wings unloaded.

Lighter and smaller than the Yak-9 but powered by the same engine, the Yak-3 was a forgiving, easy-to-handle aircraft loved by both novice and experienced pilots. It was robust, easy to maintain and a highly successful dog-fighter. It was used mostly as a tactical fighter, flying low over battlefields and engaging in dogfights below 4,000 m (13,000 ft).

The new aircraft began to reach frontline units during summer 1944. Yak-3 service tests were conducted by 91st IAP of the 2nd Air Army, commanded by Lt Colonel Kovalyov, in June–July 1944. The regiment had the task of gaining air superiority. During 431 sorties, 20 Luftwaffe fighters and three Junkers Ju 87s were shot down while Soviet losses amounted to two Yak-3s shot down. A large dogfight developed on 16 June 1944, when 18 Yak-3s clashed with 24 German aircraft. Soviet Yak-3 fighters shot down 15 German aircraft for the loss of one Yak destroyed and one damaged. The following day, Luftwaffe activity over that section of the front had virtually ceased. On 17 July 1944, eight Yaks attacked a formation of 60 German aircraft, including escorting fighters. In the ensuing dogfight, the Luftwaffe lost three Ju 87s and four Bf 109Gs, for no loss. The Luftwaffe issued an order to "avoid combat below five thousand metres with Yakovlev fighters lacking an oil cooler intake beneath the nose!" Luftwaffe fighters in combat with the Yak-3 tried to use surprise tactics, attacking from above.

Unresolved wartime problems with the Yak-3 included plywood surfaces delaminating when the aircraft pulled out of a high-speed dive, short-range and poor engine reliability. The pneumatic system for actuating landing gear, flaps and brakes, typical for all Yakovlev fighters of the time, was troublesome. Though less reliable than hydraulic or electrical alternatives, the pneumatic system was preferred owing to the weight saving.

In 1944, the Normandie-Niemen Group re-equipped with the Yak-3, scoring the last 99 of their 273 air victories against the Luftwaffe.

Total Yak-3 losses in combat were 210, 60 in 1944 and 150 in 1945.

Yak-3

main production version

Yak-3 (VK-107A)

Klimov VK-107A engine with 1,230 kW (1,649 hp) and 2 × 20 mm (0.79 in) Berezin B-20 cannons with 120 rpg. After several mixed-construction prototypes, 48 all-metal production aircraft were built in 1945–1946 during and after WW2. Despite excellent performance (720 km/h (450 mph) at 5,750 m (18,860 ft)), it saw only limited squadron service with the 897th IAP. Though the problems with the VK-107 overheating were eventually mitigated, it was decided to leave the engine for the better-suited Yak-9.

Yak-3 (VK-108)

Yak-3 (VK-107A) modified with VK-108 engine with 1,380 kW (1,851 hp), and armed a single 23 mm (0.91 in) Nudelman-Suranov NS-23 cannon with 60 rounds of ammunition. The aircraft reached 745 km/h (463 mph) at 6,290 m (20,636 ft) in testing but suffered from significant engine overheating. Another Yak-3 with 2 × 20 mm (0.79 in) Berezin B-20 cannons was also fitted with the engine with similar results.

Yak-3K

Armed with a 45 mm (1.8 in) Nudelman-Suranov NS-45 cannon, only a few built because Yak-9K was a better match for the weapon

Yak-3P

Production started after war[11] armed with 3 × 20 mm (0.79 in) Berezin B-20 cannon with 120 rounds for the middle cannon and 130 rpg for the side weapons. A total of 596 being built, none of them took part in combat.[12] The three-cannon armament with full ammunition load was actually 11 kg (24 lb) lighter than that of a standard Yak-3, and the one-second burst mass of 3.52 kg (7.8 lb) was greater than that of most contemporary fighters.

Yak-3PD

high-altitude interceptor with Klimov VK-105PD engine and a single 23 mm (0.91 in) Nudelman-Suranov NS-23 cannon with 60 rounds of ammunition, reached 13,300 m (43,635 ft) in testing but did not enter production due to unreliability of the engine.

Yak-3RD (Yak-3D)

experimental aircraft with an auxiliary Glushko RD-1 liquid-fuel rocket engine with 2.9 kN (650 lbf) of thrust in the modified tail, armed with a single 23 mm (0.91 in) Nudelman-Suranov NS-23 cannon with 60 rounds of ammunition. On 11 May 1945, the aircraft reached 782 km/h (486 mph) at 7,800 m (25,600 ft). During the 16 August test flight, the aircraft crashed for unknown reasons, killing the test pilot V.L. Rastorguev. Like all mixed powerplant aircraft of the time, the project was abandoned in favor of turbojet engines.

Yak-3T

tank destroyer version armed with 1 × 37 mm (1.5 in) Nudelman N-37 cannon with 25 rounds and 2 × 20 mm (0.79 in) Berezin B-20S cannons with 100 rpg. Cockpit was moved 0.4 m (16 in) back to compensate for the heavier nose. Engine modifications required to accept the weapons resulted in serious overheating problems which were never fixed and the aircraft did not advance beyond the prototype stage.

Yak-3T-57

single Yak-3T with a 57 mm (2.2 in) OKB-16-57 cannon

Yak-3TK

powered by a VK-107A engine, and fitted with an exhaust turbocharger.

Yak-3U

Yak-3 fitted with Shvetsov ASh-82FN radial engine with 1,380 kW (1,851 hp) in an attempt to increase performance while avoiding the overheating problems of VK-107 and VK-108. Wingspan increased by 20 cm (7.9 in), wings moved 22 cm (8.7 in) forward, cockpit raised by 8 cm (3.1 in). Armament of 2 × 20 mm (0.79 in) Berezin B-20 cannons with 120 rpg. The prototype reached 682 km/h (424 mph) at 6,000 m (20,000 ft) and while successful did not enter production because it was completed after the war.

Yak-3UTI

two-seat conversion trainer based on Yak-3U powered by Shvetsov ASh-21 radial piston engine. The aircraft became the prototype for the Yak-11.

From 1991 to 2002 there were 21 Yakovlev Yak-3, Yak-7 and Yak-9 aircraft produced in the former Soviet Union using the original plans and dies. These aircraft are powered by the American Allison V-1710 or the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engine in place of the Klimov V-12s used during the war. Several of these aircraft are airworthy, mostly based in the United States with others in Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Others have been converted to "Yak-3U" status from original Yak-11 trainers for private owners and museums.

Flying a modified modern production Yak-3UPW powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2000 engine, William Whiteside set an official international speed record for piston-engined aircraft in the under-3,000 kg (6,600 lb) category on 10 October 2011, reaching 655 km/h (407 mph) over a 3 km (1.864 mi) course at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in the United States, greatly exceeding the previous record of 491 km/h (305 mph) set in 2002 by Jim Wright. The following day, Whiteside used the same aircraft to set an unofficial speed record for aircraft in the category of 670 km/h (416 mph) over the same 3-km (1.863-mile) course.

I am currently experimenting with an Apple XR iPhone and today I imported into Lightroom a number HEIC image files including this image. I did notice that there was a degree of 'blue cast' which I adjusted for using the latest version of Luminar.

HEIC has been provided in the June 2018 releases of Lightroom CC 1.4, Lightroom Classic CC 7.4, and Camera Raw 10.4 running on macOS High Sierra v10.13 or later.

High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a file format for individual images and image sequences. It was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and is defined by MPEG-H Part 12 (ISO/IEC 23008-12). The MPEG group claims that twice as much information can be stored in a HEIF image as in a JPEG image of the same size, resulting in a better quality image.

HEIF image files are stored with filename extensions .heif or .heic.

Federal programs focus on Los Angeles River

The St. Helena Parish School Board received $2.88 million to construct an athletic complex for St. Helena College and Career Academy (High School 7 - 12).

The complex included a new football field house/stadium, concession stand, and parking lot. New concrete sidewalks and aluminum canopies were added between the new education building and stadium. The existing parking lot was re-striped with new lighting added and accessibility upgrades were included.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., hosted some 100 campers and volunteers from the Deaf-Blind Camp of Maryland on June 12. The camp, based in West River, Md., was established in 1998 to provide a safe, fun, barrier-free week for people who have significant hearing and vision loss.

Camp leaders requested the tour to highlight this year’s theme: “Out of this world."

The event started at Goddard’s Visitors Center, where the campers, aged 18 to 80, learned about space and NASA missions. The crowd favorite was touching the rockets in the Goddard Rocket Garden.

"This is a beautiful experience," said 61-year-old camper Betsy Wohl.

The truth today is I feel like a mess - exhausted, still recovering from pneumonia on top of my chronic illnesses, fed up with winter, frumpy, and yet - somehow - very much alive and wanting spring in all its forms.

I've not been taking a lot of photos with the DSLR lately but have managed a few with the readily available, lightweight, and much handier than I ever imagined, iPhone. Sammy and Angus tend not to notice the phone camera at all and it makes catching little impromptu moments, like this one in the bathroom, just a little easier.

I also downloaded the photo app Snapseed. It's pretty slick and both Angus and I give it a two thumbs up. I like the effects and he thinks it makes him look, in his words, "handsomerest."
