Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

cwd2561 ~ Still Life
I know, not your typical shot or angle when one thinks of still life, but I checked man made object can be considered still life. This old book was given to me as a gift. It was printed in 1958, well before I was born. All the pages, except the adds, were printed in black and white. One can notice the strange binding that kept every together all these years. I always shoot with available light, and this one was shot using a window light.

I wanted to get back to the set I started earlier, Form @ Home, where I try to capture the mood and feeling of some things we’ve got at home. This time I tried to use a cooler, blueish toned color instead of the sepia. Again, I'm trying to find form and details, capturing the mood and feeling of the object. For this I used the 5D with the 100mm L IS macro lens. All shot handheld with available light.
I like the video mode cause it takes me outside of my comfort zone like. This project was inspired by one of my favorite Boston street photography blogs: "because it's there, Photomusing by Jacques Philippe". His take on it is "one mile around" in photographs. My idea was to go shoot interesting scenes of any variety then bring them back and edit them into some kind of cohesive video piece. I shot prolly about an hour or so of footage and struggled to incorporate it into a 1:30 minute segment. I find that there's never enough good stuff to pick from. In the video mode i can't rely on any of my Lightroom landscape tricks and have to only look for interesting simple content, therefore it's always a great learning experience. Shot on Canon 5D2 with 17-40L and 100macro IS L. Color graded with FCP secondary color corrector and Apple Color, some Magic Bullet Mojo. Musics due to Miles Davis "Yaphet" from the Bitches Brew sessions. And there ya go, what else can I say.

This will be my last shot from my 2015 trip to Death Valley National Park. I still have to share my photos from my 2016 trip. And my annual trip to the park is scheduled for mid-March. I think we'll be seeing Death Valley photos for a long time. :-)
Next, though, I think I'll work on my last trip to Utah, including Moab.

Gaultheria mucronata, known as prickly heath[1] and in Chilean Spanish as chaura,[citation needed] syn. Pernettya mucronata, is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae, native to southern Argentina and Chile.[2] It is a compact, bushy, evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves and solitary white flowers in spring, followed in autumn by showy globose berries up to 1.5 cm in diameter, in shades from deep plum purple through pink to pure white. It is dioecious, meaning that both male and female plants must be grown together in order to produce fruit. It prefers moist, shaded conditions.

What I find most difficult in these kind of general assignment is simply figuring out what to shot. I thought this week I go back to shooting still life but with color and not black and white since I do not like the in camera conversion.

Finally my wife has caught the photography bug a bit more and is now in full swing learning about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal lengths, etc (she has always seemed to have had an eye for photography and good with compositions and that sort of stuff... perhaps something coming from one of her other hobbies; painting). After getting a new camera bag for her (the Lowepro Nova 160 AW), she has now confiscated the 350D with the 100mm macro (and the kit lens).

Found this guy on the bathroom floor. Scooped him up to feed to Harry, our pet tarantula. Thought I'd try a nighttime shot first, using an UV flashlight.
