They say “Feet of clay” is an expression now commonly used to refer to a weakness or character flaw but in Aliano this is not an expression of the people that live here but of the land they live on. The feeling of an alien landscape is a common one for visitors here, the rolling landscape is made of clay which has shaped by the wind and water to make a set of badlands to be envied by most desserts.

THE Calanchi di Aliano are a cathedral of solitude, white walls, silence and emptiness are on offer as you walk , hike, bike or horseback ride through this lunar landscape. One of the best trails to discover this wonderfully weird world is the “Santarcangiolese”, the peasant witch you can imagine the moonlight casting the landscape into a magical land full of fantastic legends about brigands, fairies, werewolves and witches wandering through this terrain.

Aliano sits a high rise of sand surrounded by hills of clay making the resulting views from the village a wonder of pyramids, white clay gorges all interspersed with the verdant greens olive and citrus groves. All of this highly erodible land makes for poor foundations which a fairly recent earthquake in the 1980’s has proven in the town and they are still rebuilding a lot of the older buildings back to what they once were.

If you are shooting landscapes some spots are not just a onetime encounter but a long term relationship, most likely if it is local you will shoot it several times a year in a lot of light levels and in many different seasons.

This shot is one I return to every autumn it sits at the entrance to a persons driveway on a dirt road section of a roadway called Garden of Eden in Renfrew county and it is home to some heavenly scenes so the name fits the location opportunities, at least for me.

So far I have been lucky when visiting this relic and have yet to be shot but the ghost of Christmas past that is driving this heap continuously gives me the creeps but all this goes into making an interesting shot location that I return to annually.

I took this on Oct 22, 2020 with my D850 and Tamron 15-30mm G2 Lens at 30mm 1/15 sec f/16 ISO64 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , and DXO

Alberobello a Truli wonderful town made a UNESCO heritage site in 1996 and really has not been discovered by the masses like a lot of Italian wonders, most of the tourists are visiting from Europe and even if it has been commercialized somewhat it is still is a beautiful place with the highest concentration of Truli in the Puglian region.

How did this building design come to be you ask? Well legend has it that the Lord of the land in the 1500’s in order to avoid paying property tax to the King had his citizens build these homes as dry fit mortarless constructions so that they could be disassembled and moved or hidden when the tax assessor came into the region keeping his tax bill low, I am not so sure this would put him in good graces with his subjects but such is the way of life.

Most of the Truli in Alberobello have been turned into stores, restaurants, souvenir stands and accommodations for those that want a Truli authentic overnight experience this scene is on the main tourist drag catching the last of the days sunlight while a laid back shop keeper watches over the last of the visitors looking to fill their bags with the local kitsch before the sun goes down.

I took this on Sept 27, 2016 with my D750 and Nikon 24-85 f3.5-4.5 Lens at 26mm 1/100s f/16 ISO 250 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , and DXO

The power of the River Clyde has been harnessed for centuries. It powered the Mills at New Lanark in the 19th Century. In the 21st it provides hydro-electricity.

Located at the entrance of Chek Jawa, the visitor centre was converted from a Tudor-style house built in the 1930s. Fondly known as House No. 1 (its postal address in Ubin), the building was awarded conservation status by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) in December 2003, and was carefully restored.

One of the unique features of the house is its original fireplace, which is probably the only one left in Singapore. The fireplace is no longer in use and is closed off as a family of Pouched Tomb bats (Saccholaimus saccholaimus) currently reside in the chimney of the house. Another rare species of Malayan False Vampire bats (Megaderma spasma) can also be found in an old water tower just beside the house. The water tower and the bats were not disturbed, and a new water tank was constructed for use instead.

The ground level of the visitor centre houses showcase information panels and interpretive displays that depict the history and beauty of the natural heritage in Chek Jawa.
