This is a very high quality, cosmopolitan M1 Garand, and the bolt is a German Sauer and Son unit from Suhl (Thuringia), Germany, on a Breda receiver, and so on.

These were probably the best bolts ever produced for the Garand, and seem to have been the last. "Best" mainly means set up for used rifles and benefitting from latest technology. There isn't much to choose between the postwar specification bolts.

It is a stainless 1 turn in 12" barreled unit, in .308, a vastly more efficient and accurate round, far more similar to the original .276 Pedersen Center fire than was the .30 Model of 1906 with which this design fought in WW2 and Korea.

M’ILLUMINO DI MENO

Energy Saving Day

- 13 February 2009 - 6 pm -

energysavingday.blog.rai.it/

M’illumino di meno (I will use less light) is both one of the most important awareness campaigns on energy saving and a widespread symbolic one day event. It was first launched on 16 February 2005, when the Kyoto Protocol, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from developed nations, came into force.

National Energy Saving Day The day’s philosophy is to convince as many people as possible to focus on saving energy. Everybody will be asked to reduce their private energy consumption to the minimum from 6:00-7:30pm. By doing so the maximum visibility in the media and the largest participation by common people are concentrated on the Energy Saving Day.

The fifth National Energy Saving Day will be held on 13 February 2009. The initiative has received for the second year the Patronage of the European Parliament and aims to grow as a European and world experience

Good habits for February 13 (and after!)

1. turn off the lights when not needed

2. turn off the electronic stand-by (options on all appliances.)

3. frequently defrost the refrigerator, keep the coil clean and away from the wall so air can circulate

4. put the lid on pots when you boil water and avoid as long as the flame is wider than the bottom of the pot (?) questa no la capisco

5. if you lower the heat radiators instead of opening windows

6. reducing fixtures (leakage)spifferi of (insulation)filling material that does not (circulate)move air

7. use tends(drapes) to create spaces in front of the windows, the fixtures, doors external

8. Do not leave curtains closed(drawn) in front of radiators

9. insert special film and reflective insulation between the outer walls and the radiators

10. use the car as little as possible and if necessary with those who share the same route.

And remember to turn off all lights and electrical devices (that) are not indispensable Friday February 13 at 18.00!

The initiative was first launched by Caterpillar, a popular and successful live radio program which reaches more than a million listeners per day. Caterpillar is broadcast by Radio2, the entertaining channel of RAI, the Italian Public Service Broadcaster. The program airs from 6pm to 7:30pm, Monday to Friday and deals with major issues and themes in the world in an informal and ironic way underlining contradictions and paradoxes in our society.

When you’ve lived in a space for quite some time, reinventing it seems like the natural thing to do. Rather than investing a ton of money on purchasing brand new items to revamp your home’s décor, you might consider finding ways to improve your existing furniture and home décor pieces to make the living space feel like new. Below are a few simple ideas to get you started:

1. Turn an Old Window Into a Frame

Do you have old wood framing that you don’t know what to do with? It can make a great frame for the right picture. You can browse online for a painting and find one to be the focal point in the room. Then place the painting inside of the window framing for a vintage looking picture frame that didn’t cost you a cent. You can always stain the frame or paint it to match the rest of the décor.

2. In/Out Bin as a Mail Holder

Mail can quickly become sprawled all around the living room area if you don’t have a designated space for it. To keep that clutter to a minimum, you can use an old in/out bin from your home office and use it to place mail in. A correspondence bin with two trays is ideal as you can store more mail or other things that tend to get dropped at the front door such as the keys.

3. Turn a Desk Into a Kitchen Island

Kitchen counter space can sometimes be hard to come by. If you don’t have the money to invest in an island or more countertops, you can consider moving an old desk into the kitchen and allowing it to serve as your island. A large wooden or metal teacher’s desk would add a nice vintage vibe to the kitchen area giving you more drawer and counter space for storage and prepping meals. You can paint or stain the desk to match the rest of the kitchen.

4. Old Door Into a Dining Room Table

Before you go out and purchase a new dining room set you might consider turning an old door into a nice family table. You can stain or paint the door and attach it securely to the old table frame. Using L braces and the proper tools, you can create a nice table that you and your family can enjoy meals on. You can use the same idea to create coffee or side tables in other rooms of your home.

The next time you’re thinking about giving your home a facelift, start by looking at the things you already have. What you may find is that there are a lot of hidden treasures in the old or unused things in your home. There are so many ways that you can take things around your house you no longer use and turn them into beautiful home décor pieces. All you need is a few household tools, and an imagination to make all of your ideas come to life.

On the way home from the auto show I happened to reach into my pocket while waiting for a red light and realized my point and shoot was there. So with my shutter release forefinger still twitching, I racked off a few shots. Not having shot from a vehicle before, I realized there are a few rules of engagement:

Rule # 1: Turn off the flash while driving at night.

Rule #2: You really shouldn’t be shooting while driving. There are laws against texting and in some local communities laws against about anything while driving including eating or reaching for something.

……………………...…….....…………THE NUMBERS…………………………………………

22

The mph according to the heads up display in the photo. If it said 72 I’d really be in trouble and probably be in jail. I really love the HUD and my next car will have to have it. See Rule #2 above.

2009

The year that Pontiac’s show was over. A great lineage that is no longer…..........….a tragedy! I loved the performance branding and the trademark nostrils.

4

That’s 4 degrees Fahrenheit according to the exterior thermometer. I know the auto show is always in mid January and that means it’s cold in Detroit. But 4 degrees!!!.... It seems that every auto show week the temperature takes a plunge.

106,228

Odometer miles…….She’s not as young and beautiful as she used to be. And the new models at the show were beckoning ………. (the cars, too!). When she gets cleaned up for the evening and puts on her shiny black coat she still looks great. And with her supercharger heart she can still get naughty with plenty of “giddyup to pass” (GTP). It was love at first drive so we made a commitment to each other a long time ago and knew this wasn’t going to be a one drive stand or short term lease. We’ve been through some things together, and despite the eye candy at the show, my love affair with her is still strong and I’m coming home with her tonight. I still love her...............Long may you run!!

I didn't know why, but there where 3 trains waiting in the sidings at Pelaw this morning (usually only 1). Turns out the Pelaw to South Hylton (Sunderland) line was closed.

Driver Gordon Crawford receives the "official" handshake from legendary controller, Brian Sturgess, at Euston after completing his final Class 1 working on board 92014 - 1M16, the 2045 Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William to London Euston Caledonian Sleeper Highlander service.

After 40 years on the footplate, including 36 as a driver, Crewe Depot’s Gordon Crawford works his last ever shift on the railway on 16 May 2024.

First, Gordon is seen with some of his long-time friends and colleagues at Crewe relieving 1M16, the 2045 Caledonian Sleeper Highlander service from Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William to London Euston.

Having relieved Drivers Steve Large and Tony Duncan, Gordon departs Crewe (Platform 6) for the last time on board Class 92, 92014 - Crewe PSB being on the ball for once and allowing him away 4E at 05:25.

Gordon is then seen arriving into Platform 15 at Euston at 07:41, 5E vs the WTT and 18E vs the publicised GBTT arrival time.

Having received the “official” handshake from Brian Sturgess after completing his final Class 1 turn, Gordon then heads over to Platform 1 to run 92010 round as 0M16. After a pause to ensure a flaky 92043 manages to get up Camden Bank with 3M11 ahead of him, Gordon then completes the run round into Platform 15 and - after his final Dellner lift - couples up with the Highlander stock.

Gordon then works his final ever train, leaving Euston 7E with 3M16, the 09:18 London Euston to Wembley Traincare Depot Caledonian Sleeper Highlander empty coaching stock move. 92010 Top ‘n’ Tail 92014 the locomotives involved, with 3M16 arriving at Wembley 6E at 09:28 (and 30 seconds).

Once at the Wembley Stop Board, the parking brake is put on and Gordon heads for home, wrapping up his illustrious railway career that has spanned more than four decades.

Happy Retirement Gordon!!

Let there be light No.1 - turn on the light then !

The BL 6 inch gun Mk V [note 1] was an early Elswick Ordnance Company breech-loading naval gun originally designed to use the old gunpowder propellants. They were used for coast defence around the British Empire.

This was an Elswick Ordnance export design, completely different from and longer (30-calibres, 183.5 inch bore) than the contemporary 26-calibres British naval service 6-inch Mk III, IV and VI guns designed by the Royal Gun Factory, although it fired the same 100-pound projectiles. The gun was of a complex all-steel built-up construction, of a steel A-tube surrounded by multiple steel hoops, breech-piece and jacket.

Several were acquired by the British government for coast defence in the UK and were given the designation 6-inch gun Mark V. The breech fittings and firing mechanism were modified in British service to standardize them with the British service guns, Mark IV and VI. The breech-screw was locked by turning to the left, unlike standard service guns made by the Royal Gun Factory, which all locked to the right. Rifling consisted of 28 grooves of the polygroove "Elswick section" type, increasing from 0 to 1 turn in 30 calibres (i.e. 1 turn in 180 inches) at the muzzle.

They were also exported for use as coast-defence guns in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australian colonies and Siam (Thailand), typically as disappearing guns.
