Arriving at Garvie Bay (Scottish Gaelic: Bàgh Garbhaidh) in the late afternoon I spent a wonderful couple of hours watching the play of light on the Assynt hills, with only some dunlin and oystercatchers for company. This image was made shortly before sunset, as a rainbow appeared near Suilven.

So many of our train shots show gleaming metal and shining livery, that we thought you might like this stripped back view inside the belly of the beast, with a shot of a train engine in the repair shop at (we thought) Arigna, Co. Roscommon.
However, while it may have been in the "repair shop" as the photographer James P. O'Dea called it, most commenters are in agreement that this engine was being dismantled or cannibalised for parts, scrap, etc. There are also suggestions that this photo was not taken at Arigna at all, but at nearby Ballinamore. As Flying Snail says:
"I don't think there was a loco repair shop at Arigna. The only workshops on the C&L [Cavan & Leitrim Line] were at Ballinamore, which was frequented heavily by photographers like O'Dea. This is where I suspect the photos is taken if it is a C&L machine we are looking at. The workshop buildings are now incorporated into a school, which the old station at Ballinamore was converted to after closure."

This was taken last week when the sky was good for a few days, managed to capture a few images that I will upload soon.
I feel the colors have slightly desaturated on flickr..
Finally meet up with an old friend and took him along with me to shoot, was great fun and hope he comes more often.
Thank you for your visit, comments good or bad.
Have a wonderful day.

Please enjoy this very colorful, southwestern view of the Seattle skyline at sunset on what was probably the warmest day of the year so far at 73F / 23C. It was a gorgeous day which, of course, transitioned into this marvelous, warm, and breezy evening.

After hiding out during the winter months, the summer Milky Way rises during the early morning hours. This area is near the center of our own Milky Way Galaxy. The yellowish stuff is stars and stardust combined. Dark nebula can be seen interrupting the stardust regions.

Inside the Mount Bromo crater - Gunung Bromo - an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, located in East Java, Indonesia.
The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.
At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Java island.

Lens: Sigma DX 8-16 HSM
Camera: pointing 45deg up and to the South-West
In the foreground you can see campers at the beach. The lights of Ao Nang town was too bright in this capture. Was almost a moonless night with little clouds.
Actually, on this day, I was supposed to shoot the sunset. During the afternoon, it started raining, so had a short nap in the cool air-cond room. By the time I woke up, it was 8pm! Grrrrr!!!!!!
I can finally lay this location to rest. This was my fifth visit to this spot and I finally captured what I wanted: raging surf and cloud action. The combination of conditions has always eluded in my previous visits, only getting one or the other. This shot was taken down in Point Lobos State Reserve, the northern edge of Big Sur. Point Lobos is one of my favorite areas of the California central coast. It has coastal forests, various coves, beaches, wildlife, and has endless compositions for photography. If I lived closer to here I would probably be down here almost every weekend for the spectacular views it offers.
Enough with the background info, here’s the story behind the shot. The Bay Area was rocked by some of the largest thunderstorms the night before. I contemplated heading out to SF to capture the epic storms but ultimately ended up sitting at home. In my almost four years in the Bay Area, the series of thunderstorms was the most intense I have encountered. The main cells passed the night before but a few patch thunderstorms remained throughout Friday. On my way down to Point Lobos, I encountered one of such patch thunderstorms on Hwy 101. I felt like I was driving through monsoon season in the southwest.
The central coast was full of drama from the passing thunderstorms. The surf was much more rough and higher than I had ever seen at Point Lobos. This shot was more difficult to pull off than appears. Though I was well above Pinnacle Rock, the high surf continuously kicked up significant mist that kept bombarding me. On top of that the surf created foam that tended to blow out my highlights or created wave action that appeared like a giant swatch of white. I realized I had to time it with the right sized wave and with an exposure not too long to get the shot I wanted. I waited, shielding my filters from the mist, and I sprang into action when the proper waves moved in. I managed to capture the rough wave action detailing the unrest of the ocean, light beams behind the clouds, and a patch thunderstorm that appeared out of nowhere on the horizon.
Hope you enjoy!

Had a thunderstorm this evening which left us with amazing lighting. Managed to catch the end of this rainbow from my bedroom window.
Didn't see my daffodils back home, but I found this lovely patch in Harmony, California! This is for Sammy ... he is one month old today!!
Happy Bokeh Wednesday!
Willie and I went to Marshall Beach a couple months ago hoping to catch a nice sunset above the Golden Gate Bridge (GGB) but came home with nothing. Willie went back and although there was a nice sunset along the coast, again, the GGB stayed gray. Hoping that the 3rd time one of us visited this beach would be the charm I grabbed my gear on Easter Sunday and drove up to Marshall Beach. I arrived about an hour early and was pretty excited. The entire drive up to SF had some beautiful looking clouds and I was hoping it would stay that way.
Of course as the sun began to set the fog started to roll in … sorta. There was just a wispy patch here and there. Some bigger clouds rolled in with some boring texture (see the photo above), but nothing too awful. Along the horizon a couple clouds rolled in and I sat there praying that they wouldn't block the sunset. To my horror, some thickish clouds perched right in front of the sun and blocked most of the sun from getting through. Enough light made it to give a slight glow to the clouds and a little bit of recovery in Lightroom brought out the purple and pinks that you see above (I only brought saturation up +5 in this).
Trying to figure out a composition for this shot was a little difficult. The area that I had scouted previously and really liked was under water. Low tide was finishing up just as I arrived sunset would be on its way towards high(er) tide. The problem was I didn't know how high it would rise before sunset. There were a couple options for compositions and I ran the risk of choosing some rocks that would either be completely underwater or perhaps completely void of water. Fortunately I chose wisely and the waves covered these 4 sets of rocks just as the sun was setting. I liked that they made a little semi-circular shape, with the rock in the back left getting some spray from the incoming waves. Overall I was pretty pleased with how the photo came out!
On my way out I was approached by another photographer, Tran Mai, and we had a nice chat about photography, photo-outings, and places to shoot. Apparently there's a big SF crowd that gets together often and she mentioned she'd include me in the future. I'm excited to meet the crew!
(Before you ask, those ducks really were there -- I did NOT photoshop them in! They were quaking around all through my photos for a while and happened to stand still long enough for this exposure to finish.)
The sky also really did look like pastels as you see it here. No post-processing was done to make it look that way. Originally when I edited this I saturated the sky wayyy too much; thanks to Willie though, for helping me revise this a couple times to get it back to a realistic look.

I had one of those magical moments out at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida this spring. In this one small pond on Black Point Wildlife Drive, there were approximately 250 American Avocets in breeding and non-breeding plumage, about 400 American White Pelicans, 4 duck species, Roseate Spoonbills, several egret and heron species in breeding plumage and numerous shorebird species. All were right next to the road and in nice early morning light. It was hard to decide where to point the camera because there was so much activity going on at once. The most difficult thing was isolating one bird from the others to get a decent image.
Within an hour, almost all of the birds had dispersed. I didn't see a lot of activity the rest of the day but that hour will stay with me for a long time.

All of them are driven by poverty and many of them even can not get to eat three times in a day. Still,
you can see the unique joy in their faces while you meet them. Our poor children other than their
poverty-struck life. That is their innocence and simplicity that keeps them happy, smiling and gives
mental strength to cope up with a life that is full of hunger, poverty as well as natural calamities.
Harry Potter and Mickey Mouse may not reach to these poverty-hit children, but you will get to know that these children also have their own playing stuffs like clay, sand, water, tress, they also playing in the seashore, laughing, flying kite, bathing in the river without caring anything else and the other things from the nature. Nature and children are very closely in my country and they do seem no less happy than the children who have access to Harry Potter and Mickey Mouse.

This female Red-breasted Merganser was feeding on Pipefish right along the shore of Parrish Park on the Indian River Lagoon. I had seen other water birds eating these Pipefish before but this is the first time I was able to get close enough for an identifiable shot. This was also the first time I had gotten close enough to see the serrated bill on a Red-breasted Merganser. The serrated bill shows much better in large size.
Taken from my car this spring, just before I got to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida.

You may now freely accuse me of being "middle-of-the-road" :)
This is the kind of view you only get if you've been run over OR are trying to get a really low-angle photo. Either way, you're lying stomach to the ground on a road. Probably not the safest idea ever, but if the picture is good it's worth it, right?
Note: If you are going to shoot at a low angle like this, you're probably going to need to angle your lens slightly upward (toward the sky) so that you don't get a very out-of-focus area in your immediate foreground. I have found that by putting my lens cap on the ground and then my wallet on top of it, I can get just the right upward tilt to the lens to avoid the out-of-focus area. The wallet idea was from another Flickr member (I wish I could remember who so I could give credit), but it works great and it's usually an item you already have in your pocket.
Thank you for your visits and comments. Please feel free to add notes to any of my images.

I went to school here for my first few grades. It is the four room school house built in 1930 in the small town of Hoosier, located in Saskatchewan near the Alberta boarder. When I attended school here only two of the rooms were in use and by the summer of 1966 the school had closed.
I remember the basement had a concrete wall dividing it in half, each side having its own stairway, the left side for the girls and boys on the right...and you didn't want to get caught on the wrong side..!!!
My family moved to Manitoba in the mid 60s where my next school was a One Room School House! There were six little rows of desks for the six grades taught there.
School has changed a lot since then hasn't it.......

Cool story about this shot
I already told you about Richard Wilson's *sculpture* "Slice of Reality" (from the year 2000), 15% of an old dredger, the other 85% is cut off. I'm a big fan of this location since I 'discovered it' back in 2010.
The funny thing is when I'm in London and I ask someone about this piece of pop-art, nobody knows of its existence. Anyway, it was on my wishlist to visit it at friday night together with Scott Wilson. I googled the Thames tides table, so I knew we would have low tide over there between 8 and 11 o' clock in the evening.
So after doing our bankside and Tower Bridge tour I suggested to take the tube to North Greenwich (O2) and so we did. To get down to the Thames it's a short walk from the O2, and when we descended towards the muddy area alongside the river Scott immediately recognized the photographic possibilites of this awesome place, yelling: "Now this is hardcore photography!" Hehe, and it sure was - especially after doing the 'tourist thing' on the Tower Bridge, LOL.
It's a fantastic place for long exposure stuff, huge clouds (and airplanes) rapidly passing by plus the pretty lights of Canary Wharf. All this, together with that huge, quite absurd sliced ship made it all quite surreal!
So there we were waving about with torches to lit up the intestines of the ship, slipping and sliding over the muddy banks of the Thames, sinking deep here and there, splashing away, while trying to keep an eye on each other not to end up in our shots all the time (we both were working with ULTRA wide angles, hehe). We were having a ball!
Actually, I was so enchanted by the whole 'moment' of being there, in a foreign country, in another metropole, at such a stunning photographic location under such excellent conditions, together with Scott who I only just met in the afternoon... it was mindblowing. I was so perplexed I only took about 25 shots in 2 to 3 hours or something.
Get back! oh wait...
In fact we were so excited we didn't even realize the water came back so fast! The difference between low and high tide in the Thames is about 7 meters (21 ft.) and we we're doing perfectly alright close to the 'Slice of Reality', but we didn't realize the water already got back around the corner, where we entered the area! Thank goodness there were still a few (slippery) rocks along the embankment sticking out above the water which we used to make it back to where we came from. If it wasn't for Scott helping me out with my gear I'd probably be stuck there, waiting for a helicopter! LOL
Whatever, even if we should have waded out of that place it still would be the pinnacle of our London meet-up, I'm sure Scott would agree. I hope you all enjoy the shot(s)!

Here we have two creatures that can see in the dark. Demetrius the cat, and the D800. Dark is an understatement. We're talking f/1.4, 85mm @ 1/30th sec, and ISO 25,600. What's more impressive than the low-light handling is the fact the AF locked on with absolutely no problems.
Versus the D700, when downsampled to match, I'd say the D800 is around 1-1/2 stops better. If I nail the exposure, I would definitely feel comfortable with a 25,600 image at 5x7... *maybe* 8x10 if the stars were aligned. I'd say I felt this way about the D700 at ~ISO 8000.
But, that's relative. I say that about the D700, but in practice I would *never* go above 6400 because of the loss of detail. Noise I can deal with, but the problem is that images start to look soft on the D700 when that high. I mean, check out the whiskers in this shot! I'd say it's easily TWO full stops more usable... if not 2-1/3rd.
