I developed a new technique for photographing at night without a tripod with the 7D. Specifically, it can be summarised as “wait-and-shoot”.

Previously I have used this technique mostly with point-and-shoots but I did not realize that I could do the same with the 7D. I have always thought that the remote release meant that it had to be wireless, but apparently you can do it with the 7D also:

1. Set the drive to be remote with a 2-sec lag

2. Frame the picture

3. Shutter release and then hold still like a tripod.

4. Click!

The reason that it works is because although there is camera shake while you release the shutter, by holding still you eliminate much of the shake. Obviously it still doesn’t beat having a tripod, but as you can see here if you can hold relatively still, this 1/13 sec exposure is possible.
