Dronefly / SML.20130321.Opinions
A new toy was sent to SML recently for remote spying with the Hero. This bird, aptly named the “Dronefly,” would carry a GoPro camera and let you fly it out to remote lands for a cool US$679. Very tempting. The only thing that is stopping SML on his tracks right now is whether or not it is built in plastic or metal. It is very hard to tell from the videos / photos from the site. If it is in metal, then it sounds like a good buy. If it is in plastic though then it seems somewhat overpriced for a quadcopter—quads are generally not the best way for flying. Three is better, I think, for this I also agree with Simon Forman, another nerd SML knows who lives in San Francisco.
# Promises + SML Translate
+ Attractive and highly integrated design.
SML: It is in white, because Apple Research suggests that humans like them white.
+ High intensity orientation-aiding LED indicators.
SML: Flashy things on the body.
+ Ready-to-fly right out of the box – no programming needed.
SML: It is human-controlled by you, the human.
+ Stable and easy to fly with agile performance.
SML: Your flight results may vary.
+ Multiple flight modes, including GPS position hold.
SML: Flight modes? GPS is nice.
+ Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC).
SML: Techno mumbo jumbo for possibly gyroscopic awareness.
+ Failsafe and auto go-home/landing.
SML: Useful when flight fail—thus probably not really that “easy to fly” afterall…?
+ Camera mount included for GoPro.
SML: The best feature. Should be the #1 real feature.
