Also at the Canon iSQUARE Hong Kong Showroom are these photo equipment demos which doubles as observation decks for visitors.

Tsim Sha Tsui, where the showroom is located at, is one of the prime location for tourists in Hong Kong. By placing these super telephoto L lenses on EOS-1 bodies, these demo setups go beyond the function of being a simple sales tool and do double-duty as observation decks for the casual visitors.

Although you can see only one of such setup here, the showroom in fact has six of these at this corner, showcasing all the crown jewels of the Canon EF Ls including the EF 400mm

f/2.8L IS II USM (pictured), EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM, etc. These lenses all retails for 10k+ USD so if you ever want to play with these toys without breaking the bank, this is the candy shop for you to visit.

This is by far the most ingenious photography showroom display I have ever seen. Crazyisgood. SML Love.

If there were a single incident in the history of mankind where the act of war has solved any problems, I have never observed it. Instead, history has shown repeatedly to me that wars have contributed to massive sufferings of the human race and countless destructions of civilisations.

The state of affairs between US and Syria has troubled me deeply. I am so in awe with the justifications pumped out by propaganda machines that I feel the urge to say something, and this is the only way I knew how.

War is never justified.

War is never the answer.

Porsches are everywhere in Hong Kong, so I’ve wised up—there is no reason to go look for them on the street really, all I need to do is go downstairs to the car park and there is a healthy dose of them in very bright colors.

The 911s are my favorite Porsche model—the duck which speeds. Beautiful forms and very humanistic. It is an unassuming form which roars when it runs.

This is the setup I currently use for most of my panorama shots. It includes the following:

+ Canon EOS 6D. An affordable (and my first) digital full-frame body. Here shown without the battery grip, as it the Manfrotto 303SPH does not extend far enough for me to use the grip in order to setup the nodal center point correctly.

+ Canon EF 17-40 f/4L. The widest lens I own. This allows me to capture for as far as I can.

+ Manfrotto 303SPH pano head. For a cool 670 USD, this baby certainly does not come cheap for a slab of metals, but after wrangling with parallax I made the plunge to buy it. I have now shot several scenes both with and without the panoramic head and you can see that it does make a huge difference. It is quite heavy though.

+ Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod. This is a versatile tripod with an easily rotatable center-column which is nothing short of genius. It replaces the 3021BPro tripod which I previously own.

+ Canon TC-80N3. My remote release. You do need this to minimize vibration. A lot of my photos shot in crowdy areas are somewhat long-exposures. Longer exposure renders moving objects as a blur, and thus hides the identity of people, so if I choose to publish it I will not need to get model release from every single one.

This setup was used to photograph www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/9404825673/ — some of my followers have expressed that the tutorials are helpful so I will try to do some more tutorials presentations in the future.

Chiharu Shiota (塩田 千春 Shiota Chiharu) is my favorite artist seen at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013. There are at least four sculptures from this series seen at the show. By the end of my visit I have learned her name intimately [1].

These series of sculptures all feature the same three raw materials: metal, threads and an everyday object. Their structural construction is the same. Color threads are secured to the metal frame where they travel in midair organically to form a cocoon-like structure to hold an everyday item—a children’s dress in this case—in mid air.

Great art to me always hold one property which is universal—pure magic through the process of an artist’s imagination. This is one such instance. Its presence is beyond what an image or words alone can transpire.

Highly recommended.

Chiharu Shiota (塩田 千春 Shiota Chiharu?) is a Japanese installation artist born in 1972 in Osaka. She has been living and working in Berlin since 1996.

She studied at the Seika University in Kyoto and at various schools in Germany and is represented by ARNDT in Berlin and Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris.

# ARNDT

Arndt & Partner was established in 1994 as one of the first contemporary art galleries in former East Berlin with an international profile. In the gallery's eighteen years of operation, it has presented more than 270 exhibitions, produced sixty publications, and participated in approximately ninety international art fairs. Within this period the gallery has also operated spaces and offices in Zurich and New York City.

In 2010, the gallery changed its structure and location from Arndt & Partner at Zimmerstrasse, Checkpoint Charlie, to Arndt at Potsdamer Strasse, Schöneberg – again launching a new gallery district and adding to the everexpanding Berlin art scene.

In addition to the ongoing exhibition program of the Berlin gallery, Arndt is expanding its operations to the vibrant art landscapes of Asia – particularly Southeast Asia and the Pacific Region. While Arndt Berlin continues to present shows of international talents from around the world and to organize curatorial projects, Arndt also stages pop-up shows in unconventional, temporary spaces in Hong Kong, Sydney, Singapore, and Jakarta.

In January 2013 Arndt opened a project space, viewing room, and Asian office in Singapore: Arndt Singapore is situated in Gillman Barracks, the new art destination located in the center of Singapore, which houses galleries and creative businesses as well as the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), opening in 2013.

Whether Edward Snowden is a “hero” is up for debate, but what the NSA PRISM whistleblower did achieve is providing evidence which many have suspected—that the US government is mining valuable data on the Internet.

Big data analysis is nothing new—companies who provide free internet services have been doing this for years. Why did you think that Twitter has no advertising but manage to get so much venture capital investments? It is because it is very easy to decipher trending opinions on the web.

Google’s company tagline has always been “Don’t be evil”—mostly because the same technology that can be used for good can be used for evil. Mint.com uses big data to track consumer spending and financial status. Biomedical researchers can use big data to track virus outbreaks. United State government certainly can use big data to track anti-terrorism activities — but the real question is if they would not mine the data for other purposes also.

The other claims which Snowden made and enraged many Hong Kong citizens are evidence which points to US Government’s active hacking of local universities and businesses. Hacking for personal gain is definitely criminal. When the US pointed at China for cyber attacks, they have utilised the media on the side to paint an ugly picture of China, but pointing fingers first simply shows hypocrisy on the country’s own politics. And this fact provided ample ammunition for political activists world wide.

Contrast makes for interesting compositions.

In colors: orange vs blue. In materials: reflective vs matte surfaces. In age: old vs new. In size: large vs small. In forms: curves vs lines. In proportion: majority vs minority. In brightness: dark vs light.

When all the elements are there they sing to my eyes. Everyday found art in the urban landscape is a living poetry waiting for the eyes to explore.

The thing which applies to photography also applies to design. The visual art language is the same for food—food tastes best when it hits all the taste buds: sweet, sour, salty, heat. Visual pleasures work best when it hits all the visual notes: hues, colors, brightness, proportion, size.

I just started watching Fringe season 5 [1], which was just concluded. I generally prefer to do season-long marathons over watching things weekly. Pacing is better for me this way.

What I used to do is chain-smoke while watching TV. But I can’t do it in Hong Kong so I started eating pistachios instead. One bag of pistachios span approximately 3 40min episodes. A bit fattening I think.

For those of you who commented that I should quit smoking, I think that I will pick getting skinny with a potentially shorter lifespan over getting fat and thus minimizing chance to get suitable mates.

Besides, SML Family has a history of long life anyway. Everybody who has passed away in the previous generations are over 90yo. I would much rather rip the benefits of smoking over living til I am over 100.

No one can say that they do not enjoy receiving the “likes” on their feed. But I enjoy the comments more—comments which explain why they like or dislike something. I don’t mind negative comments really. If we only receive kudos and no criticisms then we will never grow.

In America, I learned the arts of being “politically correct.” The problem with that stance is that I never really know what people are trying to tell me. I prefer direct and open communication. Sometimes it does hurt quite a bit, but it only hurts when we have ego. Once we remove the self-pride (which is one of the seven deadly sins), there is nothing to be hurt about.

I would much rather you tell me that you don’t like something than telling me that “it’s nice” but secretly hating it.

Please criticize me in my face and tell me you absolutely dread this crap that I am posting. If you tell me, I will correct my course and post relevant content that is of interest to you. Of course I could also agree to disagree with you.

Feedbacks—good or bad—are always good. There is no such thing as constructive vs destructive criticisms. For me, criticisms are always good. It is always feedback. But elaborate feedback are better, because we know the why.

Have an opinion. Elaborate.

Whenever people are in the market for an SLR, they come by and ask me what I thought of Nikon. I really don’t have an answer for you. I have been shooting with Canon since I was a teenager, so I know my Canon lineup very well. I do not have a lot of disposable income so although I have played with Nikon cameras, I will not be considering adding a Nikon to my camp any time soon.

So “what about Nikon?” I don’t know. Go ask a Nikon guy. They will probably love it but they are likely not in the position to compare that with Canon either.

Bottom line: the two compete in the same market, their technologies are similar to one and another. Their handling is different. You get used to one and then you stick with it.

Sticking with it is key — don’t jump around the two camps. Photography is a lifetime investment. If you ask me I would recommend that you get a Canon—for starters you are free to play with my lenses if you want to. Go with Nikon? Good luck, I won’t be able to help with any of your camera purchases in the future, but I am sure that if you can find a friend who shoots with Nikon, they would know.

Did Flickr change its view counting method after the recent UI change which shows photos in a never-ending scroll?

In the past, my typical daily view count circles around 3000 views per day, but as you can be seen in the screenshot here, it has gone up to the 5-digit range. So much so that in typical Flickr fashion they have probably locked my account two days before which moved view count to zero.

I know that they do inspect “suspicious activities” by temporarily locking accounts because every time my photos get used on prominent web sites, my view count will soar, and then immediately the next day I would see my view count drop to zero. But I am fairly certain that this is not such instance.

Also noted: normal new photo views typically circles around 50 at most daily but something posted yesterday now will circle in the 200+ values, leading me to suspect that something is going on — though exactly what is unclear.

“Tracking the trackers: Gary Kovacs explains Mozilla Collusion” #data #privacy #opinions

It was said that data is the new oil [1]. The data mining industry is an annual US$39 billion business. Like it or not, data is being collected about you surf the web. The technology was not intended as evil, but as Internet citizens we have the right to know what data is being collected and how it might affect us.

During a recent TED Talk, Gary Kovacs, the CEO of the Mozilla Corporations, demonstrated Collusion, a free Firefox add-on which visualizes your browsing behavior in real time. [2, 3]

In the visualization: the blue dots are sites which you have visited, the red dots are third party sites which are tracking you, and the gray dots are tracking data which could not be identified.

In his demo, Gary showed that 25+ sites started tracking him by checking emails during breakfast. An even more alarming aspect of this was installing the addon on his 9 year-old daughter’s computer and visualizing what companies are tracking through her browsing kids’ sites.

What Gary showed is the tip of an iceberg. Through my own consulting gigs in New York, several multi-national corporations have demonstrated what their own tech can track—which goes far beyond what is thought to be humanly possible. A very alarming feat indeed.

I didn’t think that it was possible to fit two cameras inside the Lowepro Fastpack 200. I was wrong.

Pictured: Canon EOS 7D + Canon EF 70-200 mm f/4L USM + Canon EOS M + Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM. Increasingly I am loving these f/4L lenses.

Although image quality is unbeatable with the f/2.8’s, it is no fun lugging deadweight when I travel. Comparatively speaking, the EF 100 f/2.8 Macro (not pictured) has both supreme image quality while being relatively light, thus making it ideal for travel use as well.

This bag is awesome. Highly recommended. As all the lenses and cameras, of course.

What is often rather unclear when photographing in near total darkness is the white point to develop in.

But since most image sensors are configured with 2G 1R and 1B, yellow (R+G) and green (G+G) are pretty good to work with. Here processed using green as layer. It could work just as well in black and white but I prefer the intensity of the warmth from the yellow glow so I pick it slightly towards lime.

Image sensors’ typical config: (where BG/GR together makes one single pixel)

BG BG BG

GR GR GR

This is why blue and reds are normally noisy but the greens in hardware is actually twice as much resolution. At least this is how I see it.

A sailor in “crackerjack” white uniform salutes to crew members boarding the ship while another enlisted sailor chats with another sailor named Callen in “Navy Working Uniform”—a camouflage which is digitally printed in multiple colors. According to Wikipedia, this should be the Navy Type III MARPAT [1].

The Crackerjacks—so nicknamed because of the Navy-uniformed figure that adorns the Cracker Jack snack box—are my all-time favorite uniforms worn by military units. Most probably because they feature bell-bottom cuts—a cut of pants which is closed to impossible for me to buy anywhere and I used to custom tailor them for myself—as many of my friends in New York knows.

It is for this same reason why I love the clothes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier [2], a fashion designer based in France who has had a long history of designing outfits which bears many naval uniform influences.

I have often formed the opinion that artworks which you cannot relate is not the artwork for you. In usual fashion, I am drawn to works which I find to be slightly bizarre.

From the espresso maker which I am planning to buy, an “object and its unreliable witnesses,” the “talking clock” to the witty form juxtaposed near one”s belly, I find this piece of work to be a feast to the eye.

I haven’t had a chance to speak to the gallerists so I can only respond to this as candidly as I can. I am certain that there will be far more “high-brow” mumbo-jumbo which you can chow down on various art sites. The links are below. Meanwhile as a layman this South African piece is calling to me in more ways than one.

(Note: You do much prefer my nonsensical analysis more so than the impossible-to-read essays written by people who get As in English from Yale, right?)

Seriously WTF. Crazyisgood. SML Love. Highly recommended.

# William Kentridge

William Kentridge (born 28 April 1955) is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. These are constructed by filming a drawing, making erasures and changes, and filming it again. He continues this process meticulously, giving each change to the drawing a quarter of a second to two seconds' screen time. A single drawing will be altered and filmed this way until the end of a scene. These palimpsest-like drawings are later displayed along with the films as finished pieces of art.

Hong Kong’s bus stops are very long. Each stops usually have space to allow multiple buses “park” at the same time. They usually run along the highway, so having space for multiple buses to stop along the way is necessary. This enables high speed travel with stops along major districts.

You know why New York buses are inefficient? Because in New York every block is a traffic light. In Hong Kong the urban planning is different. Buses can run on highway all the time while sections of the pedestrian walk is crafted out for bus to stop.

彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) is super psyched with the EOS M.

“Wow, this camera is the bomb!” RT said. “Finally there is a camera that I can control. I don’t even need a shutter release. I just point and it focuses. And the mirrorless body is light like me [1]. Best yet, I can even reach the lens for zooming.”

Pictured here with the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM lens [2], the Canon EOS M is the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera produced by Canon [3]. It is effectively a miniature version of the Canon EOS 650D with a simpler physical interface. Like the 7D, it contains a 18 megapixel APS-C crop frame CMOS chip. But unlike the 7D, it's focusing performance is rather poor.

However its saving grace is its ability to do full HD 1080p videography in AI servo mode—which is what SML now uses for lightweight travel use. Also now semi-permanently mounted on tripod to do videography for the Serenity series. Recommended.

I have a camera annex in my closet. You won’t see the Canon EOS 7D or the Canon EOS M here because those body is always with me in the camera bag. You also won’t see the 24-70 or the 17-40 here as those are semi-permanent fixture on the 7D and EOS M respectively. What you will find here are, from left to right (approximately):

1. Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite Flash. The perfect flash for the 100 f/2.8, but with limited use. Recommended if you do macro photography, otherwise it is a bit pricey. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/239656-USA/Canon_2357A002_...

2. Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens. Lightweight with amazing lens resolution. Highly recommended. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/183198-USA/Canon_2578A002_...

3. PocketWizard FlexTT5 Transceiver Radio Slave for Canon E-TTL II System. Before the Canon 600EX was introduced, this is the only way to do radio flash. Useful. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/605720-REG/PocketWizard_80...

4. PocketWizard MiniTT1 Radio Slave Transmitter for Canon E-TTL & E-TTL II Systems. This one is mounted on the camera body. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/605713-REG/PocketWizard_80...

5. Canon Speedlite 430EX. Pretty good though I am letting my dad use it because differences in power output makes it difficult to do manual strobes with the 580EX. Now replaced by 430EX II: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/571297-USA/Canon_2805B002_...

6. Canon Speedlite 580EX. Super bright goodness. Highly recommended. Now replaced by 580EX II: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/486706-USA/Canon_1946B002_...

7. Canon CP-E4 Compact Battery Pack. Improves flash recycle times by 3 times for the 580EX. Nothing special about it except that it houses 8 more AA batteries so I guess that it just cycles faster. If you use Ni-MH rechargeable batteries it should already be pretty fast. Though Ni-MHx12 is obviously super crazy fast. Recommended. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/498738-REG/Canon_1947B001_...

8. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens. The non-L lens which has image quality which rivals other L lenses. This is a must-buy. Good for macro as well as portraits. Highly recommended. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/194451-USA/Canon_4657A006_...

9. Canon Angle Finder C. Allows you to adjust viewing angle while providing 1.25x to 2.5x switchable magnification. Super useful for doing macros and other odd camera placement when eyeing from the back is not really possible. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/183200-REG/Canon_2882A001_...

10. Canon EOS 10D. My first DSLR. 6.3 megapixel ACPS-C crop frame goodness. It is at its 60,000+ cycles and still going strong. Used as my spare as well as perms-loan to dad. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_10D

11. Canon EOS 100. My first SLR bought by my dad when I went to Yale in 1995. It is my only film camera and yes it still works. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_100

12. Canon PowerShot G12. My point+shoot camera. Highly recommended for photographers but not recommended for amateurs, this shoots JPEG and RAW on SD cards. 10MP CCD sensor with the usual Av / Tv / Manual functions. But for amateurs it can be somewhat daunting—my dad gave up on it and gave it back to me. But he is using the 10D and loving it. This is why I told amateur photographers that they should just get a DSLR because it is easier. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/734743-REG/Canon_4342B001_...

13. Canon PowerShot G2. My first Canon P+S. I loved it. I don’t know if it still works but after moving back to Hong Kong I found something in the memory card taken in 2007. Super awesome. Recommended. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_PowerShot_G

14. Canon ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter. Before Canon got into the radio transmitting game, this is the only wireless off-camera flash controller. (although the MT-24EX also can do that up to 3 groups). The ST-E2 controls up to 2 groups. Super useful is that it emits AF-assist beam in very low-light conditions so I sometimes mount it on the camera even when I don’t use flash. Recommended. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164264-REG/Canon_2478A002_...

乳豬 Baby suckling pig is a Chinese delicacy. Pictured is how it is served at 翠亨邨 Tsui Hang Village — where SML had his Chinese New Year dinner with the mom’s side of the family. Super yummy. It was said that SML’s sister MSL can eat one by herself. I can too. In previous visits 翠亨邨 Tsui Hang Village used to have the best 乳豬 Baby suckling pig SML has had in Hong Kong, but perhaps because the restaurant was too busy during the holiday seasons (Chinese Near Year) it was not as spectacular as before. Still it was very good. SML Love. SML Rec.

# About 乳豬 Baby suckling pig

A suckling pig (or sucking pig) is a piglet fed on its mother's milk (i.e., a piglet which is still a "suckling"). In culinary, a suckling pig is slaughtered between the ages of two and six weeks. It is traditionally cooked whole, often roasted, in various cuisines. It is usually prepared for special occasions and gatherings.

The meat from suckling pig is pale and tender and the cooked skin is crisp and can be used for pork rinds. The texture of the meat can be somewhat gelatinous due to the amount of collagen in a young pig.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suckling_pig

“Together with the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens [6], this setup weighs more than 1000 times my total weight,” RT said. “My hands cannot really reach the shutter release on the camera, but thankfully the battery grip has another shutter release which allows me to do portrait photography easy. After affixing the iPad on the Hover Bar, I thought that it would be an excellent webcam to do video conference with. And apparently I had the same idea more than a year ago—because I already own the app for it: PocketCam by Senstic. It seems that I gave up on it before because doing teleconference while holding a device is no fun, but now that the iPad hover hands free it makes things easier.

In case you have no idea wtf is going on in this photo, I have zoomed in my monitor to show the Skype preferences window. By point the iPad cam to the greatly zoomed in window, I created a gigantic feedback delayed video loop. It is delayed because the video signal path to slow. But it is fun as you can see the windows rotate one by one over time. You see, lag is good for _something_. :)

彩熊 Rainbow Teddy (RT) overheard a conversation recently: “Why does the rainbow flag represents LGBT?” an SML Family member asked.

”Oh, it’s because the rainbow is all-inclusive and it represents people in all different colors,” RT hijacked the conversation while fanning out the Pantone Color guide to show the amazing beauty of color diversity.” But if you want more information about the rainbow flag, let me Google that for you:

According to Wikipedia, the rainbow flag, sometimes LGBT pride flag or gay pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches. It originated in California, but is now used worldwide. [1]”

“可能中文會比較容易明白: 彩虹旗作為同志驕傲標誌是起源於美國加州。顏色反映的LGBT社區的多樣性, 所以自20世紀70年代成為LGBT (Lesbian 女同性戀者, Gay 男同性戀者, Bisexual 雙性戀者, Transgender 變性者)社會運動的象徵。”

RT is eager to share his Google knowledge with humans who don’t enjoy Googling. Please feel free to ask more questions in the future!

As Cosmopolitan writes, it is “Sex in the City marries Facebook.” While SML has his “MenReview” project, it seems that this idea is not really that far off, as clearly there is a market for men reviews.

Available on iOS as well as the Android platform, LuLu allows women to review men anonymously, with things which women apparently do care about: is he ambitious, trustworthy, good in bed?

Sickly awesome. Crazysigood. SML Love.

Combo today: Canon EOS M + Canon EF 50mm f/1.4.

The 50 f/1.8 is pretty crappy but the 50 f/1.4 is pretty sweet. Yes there is also the 50 f/1.2L from Canon but I do not shoot enough 50mm to justify that purchase.

1. The updated iTunes is awesome. Spiffy and neat. SML Love. SML Thank You. Yes I own a lot of @Tiesto. Tiesto is my “work like a machine” biohacking music. The US Air Force uses Amphetamine for the same purpose, but Tiesto is both safer and cheaper (and legal in most countries).

2. Now that my iTunes Match subscription has ended, I can finally change country. SML Thank You. Updated my credit card information to Hong Kong, so all should be good, right?

3. Apparently not. I kept on getting error 5002. Googling the net it seems that credit card info is the issue. People suggest that removing CC and then only subscribing again should work. But not for me.

4. But I have identified the issue. Basically, the US address entries contain City and State information which Hong Kong address does not. But since I used to live in New York, those fields are active, thus obviously my bank does not authorize an address in Brooklyn but there is no way for me to remove those entries in my address fields [2]

Wrangling with cables is every nerd’s daily routine. I don’t actually think that there is a solution to this. I think that I have bought at least 4 strips of power outlets since moving back to Hong Kong in 2012.

Pictured is one of the power strips for charging batteries for photography equipment alone.

From left to right: Canon LP-E6 for the Canon EOS 7D (I have two of these). Canon LP-E12 for the Canon EOS M. Canon NB-7L for the Canon G12. Then there are two Energizer AAx4 together with another BP AAx4 unit.

NiMH batteries are the best if you want to get rapid firing action on flash. You know why I can strobe non-stop and keep up the high frame rate of the 7D? NiMH. Use them. They are awesome.

This is one of my favorite Chinese snack. It is very popular in South East Asia and it has different names depending on region. It is known as krupuk or kerupuk in Indonesia; keropok in Malaysia; kropek in the Philippines; bánh phồng tôm in Vietnam and xiapian (蝦片 虾片 "prawn chips") in Chinese.

The ones seen in the photo was photographed at 東海酒家 East Ocean Restaurant in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. It is served as a light hors d’oeuvre before the meal and is infused with black pepper, which is very yummy.

#OnlyInHK—“Torino Lamborghini cigarettes” #wtf #crazyisgood

Branded as the L6 and L8, the Lamborghini cigarettes designate their product lines with respect to the amount of nicotine in each cigarette. Hong Kong cigarette packaging is very informational. You know exactly how much nicotine and tar you are consuming. Unlike in the US where cigarettes’ nicotine content is a complete guessing game, at a glance you know on the packaging that the L8 contains 8mg tar and 0.8mg nicotine. The Davidoff which I smoke usually contains 10mg tar and 0.9mg nicotine. Knowing this also makes buying Nicorettes easier.

How does it taste? Pretty good. I don’t really think that I will be changing brands any time soon. But I do still miss my additive-free cigarettes in New York: American Spirit and Nat Sherman’s, which I cannot find in Hong Kong at all. International travel is no longer an option either as cigarette allowance is 19 count (1 box of 20 minus 1) which is why the trash bin before custom is a cemetery for that single cigarette disposal. It is stupid really. Hong Kong Gov should just create a cigarette recycling bin I think…

Oblivious to the chaos surrounding around him, Rainbow Teddy (RT) got into the “zone” trying to figure out the best move to counter SMLBioBot’s opening while the red blitz chess clock is ticking away.

“You know, I am a nice guy,” RT said. “SMLBioBot has agreed to play chess over Skype with his Mr G next weekend, so I figured that I would help him out a little bit. There aren’t many gay geeks out there who can play chess well and I am just doing my part to get him up to speed.”

RT is pictured here with SML’s beloved Fischer designed chess set with dotted bishops so it is easy to tell the pawns from the bishops even when photographed head on from above. Design SML Love. :)

The MTR stations in Hong Kong are color coded. Pictured is the station for 西灣河 Sai Wan Ho. Color coding stations serve a few purpose:

+ Recognizable during rush hours. If you have been on the metro in Hong Kong or Tokyo, you know that what NYC consider “crowdy” is no comparison. When you can barely move, there is no chance that you would be able to see what station it is in. But it is easy to see that you are surrounded by colors—yellow in this case.

+ Trans-cultural. Color coding transcends all language barrier. Although Chinese and English combined cover most of the languages spoken by the locals, travels to Hong Kong might not read these languages well. But most people (with the exception of the color blind, which is 1% male) would be able to recognise colors—so all they need to know is that they have to get off at the yellow station. This strategy works well for all.

+ Mood stabilising. Most of the colors utilised are in a heavy saturated spectrum. Colors have a psychological effect to humans. Whether you like it or not, cheery colors do relieve some of the stress. And workers in Hong Kong are highly stressed. Daily overtime is expected to most—and not just the bankers. I have found cheery paints painted on various public housing architecture in Hong Kong and I reason that perhaps any bit of ambient device can help.

I love design which serves a function. And the MTR is a great example of well done information design at work.

One of the Little Green Men (LGM) from Toy Story was also at the photoshoot with Rainbow Teddy (RT) and Daddy Smurf that night [1] but he has a different opinion regarding how to use the strobe.

LGM: I think that a bare bulb is better than SML’s ceiling bounce.

SML: Why?

LGM: If I hold the flash this way, it highlights how private your date is.

RT: But we are just hanging out—SML was lying. We are definitely not on a date. My love is for Tigger.

SML: Really? So where is Tigger?

RT: Well you did say that he was too big to tag along…

LGM: I heard that also!

SML: …

So basically depending on your needs, different lighting setup gives you a different effect, and this capture illustrates a few things:

1. The stadium is very dark.

2. The flash by itself covers a very small area.

3. If you bounce from the ceiling it creates a much larger area.

4. Bounced flash is able to create a big soft light.

5. Unbounced bare bulb flash is able to create a small but harsh light.

So which do you use? It depends on the look you are going for.

Most of the non-L lenses from Canon is pretty bad, but the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is one exception. As a prime lens, its sharpness is second to none. The large aperture makes it perfect for portrait shooting. Its ability to focus at 0.38 m distance makes it great for macro photography. All these and it is super light. So I am taking it with me on the EOS M for a run around town tonight.

In this particular config it does look kind of phallic though :)

Lens caps are for pussies. I don’t use them but I always use my lens hoods.

The lens hoods are functional objects. For one, they shield the rain and stray lights entering the lens. For another, it allows me to store my camera in my camera bag without a lens cap while providing enough space between the lens and the bag.

When I go out and shoot I often see people putting the hood the wrong way—well if you put it the other way around it does nothing except obstruct your control of the lens. I see that often enough that I wonder if Canon should perhaps put something in the instruction manuals so people will know why it was included in the first place.

Pictured is the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and the Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM with their lens hood. It is photographed with the Canon EOS M with the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM. And as you can see, this EF-M prime is not too shabby in doing macro photography. On the far end though the chromatic aberration is quite noticeable, however, so it definitely is not an ideal lens—but you definitely cannot beat its weight.

“Skype screen share becomes premium; Google+ Hangout = free;” $MSFT $GOOG

I just went onto Skype to screen share for a conference but apparently after Microsoft bought Skype, all these features which used to be free comes with a $ sign. You can’t even just pay with credit anymore. To use premium features you must subscribe to a monthly €6.99/month or annual plan: €3.49/month.

Thankfully you don’t need to stick with Skype. First off, for video conferencing I have found Apple’s FaceTime (free) to have the best quality so this is where I do the actual video conferencing, which is free. Google Plus’ Hangout (also free) supports screen share so that is what I use to share the actual screen.

Relying on monthly subscriptions to drive revenue is terrible. Companies can make more money doing data analytics for businesses, I think. But some companies are filled with financial advisors who just want to make quick easy bucks. Ah well, shortsighted business people abound.

Last year, I asked a question on Quora asking why Apple ($AAPL) does not violate antitrust laws to default Safari as its browser on iOS devices while Microsoft ($MSFT) was fined billions for defaulting Internet Explorer in Windows. An anonymous user reasoned that Apple’s practice cannot be considered as monopolistic because it does not hold the majority share of the market [1].

A couple of days ago, Bloomberg reported that Apple has—for the first time—taken over Samsung to become the top mobile-phone maker in the U.S. [2]

Does this mean that it is finally possible to pressure Apple to give users the option to customize which browser is used by default on iOS? That would be very welcome, as Google ($GOOG) Chrome on iOS in my opinion gives a far better user experience than Safari, and frankly it is wasting a lot of time for me to be copying URLs from Safari just so that I can paste into Google Chrome.

1. Bloomberg: 2013-02-01: Apple Overtakes Samsung With 34% of U.S. Mobile Market: www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-01/apple-overtakes-samsung...

Apple Inc. (AAPL) passed Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. to become the top mobile-phone maker in the U.S. for the first time, scoring a victory in the companies’ battle for global dominance of the mobile-device market.

The U.S. market is a stronghold for Apple as it faces intensifying competition from Samsung and other smartphone makers using Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system. Samsung, which also makes cheaper handsets with less sophisticated functions, is the global leader in mobile phones with more than 100 million units sold last quarter.

I have had shark’s fins many times now but I have never had 斑翅 garoupa fins. The two should not really be compared as they are technically different, but part of the it has the texture of shark’s fins which is quite wonderful.

Security experts are advising that a networking feature known as Universal Plug and Play be disabled on routers, printers, and cameras, after finding it makes tens of millions of Internet-connected devices vulnerable to serious attack.

UPnP, as the feature is often abbreviated, is designed to make it easy for computers to connect to Internet gear by providing code that helps devices automatically discover each other over a local network. That often eliminates the hassle of figuring out how to configure devices the first time they're connected. But UPnP can also make life easier for attackers half a world away who want to compromise a home computer or breach a business network, according to a white paper published Tuesday by researchers from security firm Rapid7.

An international roster of photojournalists stood by at the footbridge crossing Garden Road between Cheung Kong Centre and Bank of China Tower waiting for the rally to go underneath them.

Every time I go do photojournalism I would notice people trying to get a spot in the front. Actually the best vantage point is not down there—it’s up there. Grab a telephoto lens and start shooting.

Exactly what are the differences between Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lenses besides the difference in pricing, someone on Facebook asked.

Quite a bit. When I do any kind of shopping, I perform extensive research. And I can see the differences regarding performances among these lenses. I also asked the opinions of my peers who have worked with these lenses.

The number 1 criticism cited by photographers regarding the 50 f/1.8 II is the poor construction. Note that people have problem mostly with the Mark II but not the Mark I. So if you have the Mark I then this criticism does not apply.

The other main difference, as can be seen pictured here which comes directly from the Canon EF Lens Book III is the lens elements configuration. Generally speaking the L series contains aspherical lens elements which makes their images superior to others. As one photographer once said to me, although for the consumer line of lenses you often have to pump the saturation quite a bit, when shooing with the L lens you often need to dial the saturation down.

I have worked with both lines of lenses and I can speak to this fact.

Basically you don’t need expensive lenses if you are willing to work on the photo after the fact, which you should anyways, but working with good input does usually save time and effort in postproduction aka processing workflow.

With a Crisply fried dough inside and a steamed smooth texture outside, this traditional Hong Kong dim sum is one of my favorite, and can usually only be had in noodle and congee shops. While most places often render the fried dough (twisted cruller) soggy inside, 正斗 Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop at IFC Central gave a nice rendition. Comes with soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and sesame paste. A nice side dish for the evening.

Makibox = 3D printer for 200 USD! The catch is that you have to assemble it yourself. The more well known MakerBot is a 3D printer for 2500 USD although that printer does come assembled.

I am thinking of getting one. The 200 is definitely a chewable R&D cost. Its founder Jonathan Buford is based in Hong Kong so I figured that if I failed miserably in my assembly there is at least someone close by to give me some help.

Will let you know how it goes once my order is in. I figured that if I successfully got this to work I can probably graduate from geekdom into nerddom so it would be a very worthy thing to do.

According to an SML trusted source [1] as well as available public media sources, Japanese fashion retail brand Uniqlo is considering a public listing by introduction on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2013 with no additional funding. The main purpose of the IPO is believed to be further establishment of brand image.

My being a lover of Uniqlo’s products, it is a no-brainer that it is on my buy-list.

Data is important to me. Some humans commented that I have a lot of tags. If you have no data, sure, you don’t need tags. But if you have 10,000+ media items on Flickr like I do, you tag, you organize, you make sure that everything you do is searchable so that when someone asked you for a photo, you are able to find it under 10 seconds. I can do that. Can you?

1. I use Adobe Lightroom, because it has tight integration with the EXIF metadata storage scheme implemented by Flickr.

2. When I enter information in the title / description area of Lightroom, it automatically populates the relevant fields on Flickr. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/

3. When I assign keywords inside Lightroom, they get populated as Flickr tags. Lightroom has an awesome feature which allows you to create synonyms for tags, and is what I currently do for Chinese tags. I am bilingual, Flickr is not. So assigning synonyms inside Lightroom, I tag once but then Flickr shows both Chinese and English on the page. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/

4. The JPEG format stores metadata information in the form of EXIF. Add /meta to the Flickr URL and you see it instantly. JPEG EXIF on Flickr is text only, making it very indexable by search engines. All that info you spend time organizing in Lightroom is reflected automatically. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/meta

Some people said that they have no idea where I find the time to popular these fields. I don’t. Everything is automatic. Things just get smartly embedded everywhere. With a few scripts anything is possible.

It takes someone with a vision to steer a company, and it takes someone with principles to be the gate keeper for optimal user experience. Having the guts to believe in something will likely upset many people in the process. Doing so will often facilitate hate from the team. It will not make you popular, but the fate of the company rests in that person’s hand.

I cannot help but notice that Apple’s user experience went to dust after Steve Jobs died. I am not even a member of the Mac cult myself, as I use every single OS in the market. I started using OSX as my main operation system after falling in love with Gnome with Ubuntu in 2008. So my conversion is dissimilar to most. It was not because of my hate for Microsoft, but my love for Linux.

Pictured is the latest iTunes update. I was looking for Genius but I cannot find it. For the first time I consulted with the help for iTunes. I have never once before used the help docs for doing anything inside iTunes. It seems that to evoke Genius you now have to Control-click to start a genius play. Who the __ came up with this unusable nonsense? What is wrong with the UX team? Is there massive fight overs now that Steve Jobs died? One can only imagine the politics inside this US technology business after the powers that be is no longer alive.

SML2AAPL: take care of your customers. When you fail that you will see your stock plummet like a free-fall. Just look at $FB. Stop the infighting if it exists. I hope that I can expect better from you in the future. Like you said, think different. After Jobs’ death I can hardly differentiate you from other technology business anymore.

SML Opinions:

Yahoo has had a good year. I reason that it largely has to do with the economy of China. Although in Google is the defacto search engine in the US, when you move around the world you will notice that different parts of the world’s primary search engine differs greatly.

For example, in Hong Kong, the number 1 search engine that people reference (just by casual conversation) is Yahoo. In the UK, it seems that people reference Bing often. This is unusual to me. But if you think deeply, Google has many properties which are blocked by China’s Great Firewall. Google could not survive in China so if China is slowly becoming the creditor of the world, then it would make sense for companies which are able to survive in China to do well.

One must also not forget Baidu. There are a ton of amazing content available in Chinese. Just because you cannot read it does not mean that data is not available. This is often the number 1 thing I noticed about technology companies based in the US—they ignore the audience in other parts of the world while trying to be a global products and services company. You can’t force your language and culture onto others. Learn from history regarding world peace and diplomacy. Then you will go far.
