Weather Report's self-titled debut album was released on May 12, 1971, by Columbia Records. This groundbreaking album received critical acclaim and was awarded Album of the Year by Down Beat magazine's polls that year.

 

In Japan, the album was issued by CBS/Sony, Columbia's Japanese affiliate, under the same title. The Japanese release featured the same tracklist as the original U.S. version. Notably, the album's back sleeve includes liner notes by Clive Davis, then president of Columbia Records, praising the band's originality.
