RED HOUSE - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE (1969)

www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/the-american-sing...

Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell (drummer)and Noel Redding (Bass) who came from Folkestone, all formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1968 photograph of them boarding a plane at Lydd Airport)

I can see this house from my landing window. They stayed at The Red House in the 1960s.

Macy Gray was a no-show to close Montreal's jazz festival, so local artists The Brooks stepped in with several local vocalists.

Macy who?! What a show!! Jazz, soul, funk,...they even played some go-go!!! =D What a surprise to here go-go so far north of Adams Morgan and Shaw....!

A little taste from years past:

be'auti 'mu:zek in Tokyo (Shinjuku)

A blend of digital colouring and enhancement along with touches of sepia toning were used in this one to give a sense of the timelessness of Times Square, of the great span of its years in history. From the old New York of the Rockefellers, the Carnegies and the Mellons to Apple, iPhones and Instagram Times Square is probably one of the greatest indicators of the human pulse over the decades since it's initial construction.

Time, space and singularity of perception are broken up, or, made simultaneous with several others. As we approach the Quantum Age, non-singularity of view, simultaneity and indeed, non-locality will increasingly become our ways of seeing.

I took my inspiration for the colouring of this image from the work of Paul B0udreau, whose unique art always boggles my mind.

Music Link: "Stratus", Billy Cobham. From his album "Spectrum". This is a live, tour de force piece of Jazz wizardry performed by Cobham and his band, featuring some strangely appropriate, brilliant steel drum playing by his percussionist. "Stratus" always felt to me like music for a BIG city.

▶ Released in 1974, the album, Mysterious Traveller, marked Weather Report's transition from the improvisational sound influenced by Miles Davis' Bitches Brew to a more composed-through funk/rock vamping.

It's also my personal favorite of Weather Report's pre-Jaco Pastorius oeuvre; in particular, the cuts: Blackthorn Rose with a beautiful soprano sax/piano duet, the miniature electronica of American Tango, the ethereal (and mysterious) title track, Mysterious Traveller, and the jazz-funk workout of Cucumber Slumber.

▶ "In 1974, three years after the band's inception, Weather Report became one of the world's most popular jazz groups due to their uncompromising originality and musicianship. This was the year that founding member Miroslav Vitous was replaced by Alphonso Johnson, who became a critical asset as both a fluid, creative bassist and a composer. Drummer Ishmael Wilburn and Brazilian percussionist Dom Um Romao, with a shifting cast of supporting players, laid the foundation for the band's most exciting incarnation yet. The overdue reissue of Mysterious Traveller is a welcome acknowledgment of this mid-period lineup's importance in the evolution of fusion."

My vision for this was as a statement design for BIG skirts in dancing outfits worn over black leotards, with fly away neck scarfs, but I think it also looks good as flanged cushions. Could be fun as a seat for the piano stool... for the right sort of musician!

SCOTT HENDERSON TRIO

Studio: Bolic Sound, Inglewood, CA and Whitney Studios, Glendale, CA (March 19–June 1, 1973)

sleeve design: The cover was done by Dave McMacken as somewhat in vein of Salvador Dalí's surreal imagery depicting a two-headed man sitting on a waterbed in a Holiday Inn hotel room surrounded by various objects like a Mothers backstage pass and a television set showing Zappa's face with slime oozing out of it. The entire painting is depicted in a frame showing many sexual acts.

**************

All About Jazz

**************

▶ To me, 1974's Mysterious Traveller marked Weather Report's transition from the improvisational sound of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, in its first albums, to the more composed-through funk/rock vamping of its later efforts. It's also my personal favorite of Weather Report's pre-Jaco Pastorius oeuvre, and, in particular, the cuts: Blackthorn Rose with a beautiful soprano sax/piano duet, the miniature electronica of American Tango, the ethereal (and mysterious) title track, Mysterious Traveller, and the jazz-funk workout of Cucumber Slumber.
