Mandrake or Mandrake Som, pseudonym of Ivanir do Nascimento (Guaratinguetá, May 21, 1934 – Rome, September 8, 1988), was a Brazilian singer and percussionist naturalized Italian, active in Italy since the late 1950s.
The nickname comes from his participation in a Brazilian television program in 1959 in which Enrico Simonetti took part as conductor and arranger: during an episode dedicated to magic, Ivanir do Nascimento, being the only member of the orchestra with a moustache, impersonated the magician Mandrake, later taking his name definitively. Mandrake takes part in shows and recordings with internationally renowned artists such as Jair Rodrigues, Elis Regina, João Gilberto, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque, Vinícius de Moraes, Wilson Simonal, Carlos Piper, Roberto Carlos Braga, Gal Costa.

Satoh was born in Tokyo on 6 October 1941. His mother was Setsu and his father, who owned small businesses, was Yoshiaki Satoh. The house that his family moved into in 1944 contained a piano; Masahiko started playing it at the age of five. He began playing the piano professionally at the age of 17, 'accompanying singers, magicians and strippers at a cabaret in the Ginza district'.
Masahiko Satoh's All-In All-Out (1979) is a standout album in the Japanese jazz fusion scene, showcasing Satoh's innovative approach to blending jazz with diverse musical elements.
All-In All-Out is praised for its dynamic compositions and the synergy between musicians. While the opening track 'Sapajou Walk' is considered more conventional, the subsequent pieces are lauded for their intensity and creativity. Listeners highlight the powerful rhythm
section and the expressive solos that define the album's character.

Stan Getz (born Stanley Gayetski, February 2, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as 'The Sound' because of his warm, lyrical tone, with his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as 'one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists'. Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he also helped popularize bossa nova in the United States with the hit 1964 single 'The Girl from Ipanema'.

Eubanks was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he began studying the violin at the age of 7 with good results, later becoming equally good at playing the piano and the trumpet. He says he fell in love with the guitar at a memorable #JamesBrown concert he had attended when he was 12 and then, when he announced to his parents that he would like to add the guitar to his instrumentation, they were far from happy at the thought of having to pay for other lessons. Nonetheless, he bought a guitar and began learning to play it on his own. His references were Wes Montgomery, #JohnMcLaughlin and #JimiHendrix. He played with Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Slide Hampton, and Sam Rivers before starting his own group in 1983. Like his brother Robin Eubanks, a jazz trombonisthe participated in studio recordings with Dave Holland.

🔥 Brazilian Jazz Countdown: 'Flame' by Azymuth – A Rare Japanese Gem 🔥
As we continue our countdown toward the much-anticipated early morning with Hermeto Pascoal—Tuesday at 7:00 AM sharp—today we’re turning up the heat with a true vinyl treasure: 'Flame' by Azymuth, showcased here in its stunning Japanese pressing, complete with obi strip and insert.
Released in 1984, Flame captures Azymuth at their jazz-funk peak—sophisticated, soulful, and sonically rich. But what makes this album glow even brighter is the presence of two Brazilian legends who bring extra layers of brilliance.
✨ Flora Purim appears on the track 'The Textile Factory' (Fábrica De Tecidos), co-written with bassist Alex Malheiros. Her voice floats effortlessly over the rhythmic architecture, transforming the track into something otherworldly and hypnotic.
🎺 On the title track 'Flame', Marcio Montarroyos steps in on trumpet and absolutely shines. His phrasing, tone, and lyrical touch elevate the composition into a truly cinematic experience. And speaking of Marcio—if you know his powerful collaboration on the album 'Marcio Montarroyos / Stone Alliance', you already understand the depth he brings. That self-titled record, which I also happen to own in a Japanese edition, is a serious jazz-fusion heavyweight—raw, spiritual, and electric.
So whether you’re discovering Flame for the first time or returning to it with fresh ears, let it guide you further into the soul of Brazilian fusion. More treasures to come as we keep the groove going right up to Hermeto’s sunrise set.
🌞 See you tomorrow for the next chapter in the countdown.

While digging deeper into Dave Liebman's discography and related projects, I came across the album Father Time. As I explored further, I noticed that Frank Tusa was involved, which caught my interest even more. It was through this deeper dive into Liebman's associated acts and collaborations that I discovered the album and its ties to both artists. I later found out there was also a Japanese release of Father Time, which led me on a hunt for that version—and I was lucky enough to track down a promo copy.
'Father Time' is a deeply personal, musically adventurous statement from Frank Tusa. It captures a moment when a bassist stepped into the spotlight—supported by top-tier collaborators from Liebman's ensemble—blending improvisational freedom, rhythmic exploration, and melodic warmth. If you're drawn to adventurous jazz from the mid-'70s that blends acoustic intimacy with rhythmic diversity, this is a standout recording.

A twin-flute session that's graced by the talents of Joe Farrell and Sam Most on reeds – both working here in one of their loosest, freest settings of the 70s! Both flutes get equal space in the lineup – flying and fluttering around each other, then taking off in some really great solos that have plenty of freedom, yet which still maintain the strong sense of rhythm we expect from both players. Other members of the group include Bob Magnusson on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums, Jerry Steinholtz on percussion, and Mike Wofford on both acoustic and electric piano – the latter of which is heard to great effect on the sweet groover 'Samba To Remember You By', a laidback jazz dancer that's really great. Other titles include 'Love Season', 'Hot House', 'Leaves', 'Sound Off', and 'Kim'.

The Japanese pressing of Faces in Reflection (catalog number ULS-6048-P) is a gem not only for its pristine vinyl quality and elegant packaging, but for capturing one of the boldest statements in jazz-funk fusion history. Released on MPS Records and reissued in Japan with the iconic obi strip and Japanese liner insert, this version stands out as a highly desirable collector's piece.
From the opening note, Faces in Reflection radiates high-level artistry. The interplay between these three masters is nothing short of electrifying. Duke’s solos are otherworldly, gliding between lush Rhodes textures and searing synth leads that remain completely grounded in groove. His command of space and melody — even when venturing deep into electronic territory — feels both futuristic and deeply rooted in soul and funk traditions.
Tracks like 'Psychosomatic Dung' and 'Faces in Reflection (No. 1 & 2)' serve as pure, high-octane jazz-funk workouts, with Ndugu Chancler’s drumming supplying rock-solid pulse and dynamic fire, while John Heard’s bass keeps things locked down with deep, melodic swagger. The trio format leaves no room to hide — and none is needed. Each player brings the full force of their creativity to the table.

Swish (Japan Edition) – A Musical Journey Revisited
Today I’m thrilled to share the Japanese release of Swish by the Harris Simon Group—a gem originally recorded in 1980 at Sound Ideas Studio in New York. Over the years, this album has found its way through several reissues, especially in Japan, where jazz fusion has long had a loyal audience.
From my own perspective, I have to say—New York Connection still holds a special place in my heart. There’s something about that album’s feel and energy that really speaks to me. But Swish absolutely stands on its own—more refined, more polished in some ways. I’m lucky to have both albums in my collection, and they complement each other beautifully.
The music on Swish blends modern jazz, Brazilian rhythms, smooth fusion, and sophisticated arrangements. It’s a record that showcases the talent of a group that never got the recognition it truly deserved—especially Harris Simon, who remains something of a mystery, even now.

Mr. Hands – Herbie Hancock's Untamed Fusion Spirit
Today’s post is about a true jazz-funk titan—Herbie Hancock’s Mr. Hands, the 1980 gem that often gets overshadowed by his earlier fusion landmarks but still punches with fire, invention, and soul. What makes this post even sweeter: it’s about the Japanese pressing, complete with the original obi strip and insert. You know the deal—attention to detail, warmth in the pressing, and that iconic Japanese packaging finesse that turns a great record into a collector’s dream.
But Mr. Hands isn’t just pretty packaging. This is Herbie at his most unpredictable and versatile. It’s not a record that plays safe. Each track is a different animal, as if Herbie threw out the idea of making a 'cohesive' album and instead went wild in every direction he wanted. The result is a killer showcase of what made him a genre-breaking icon: groove, experimentation, control, and chaos.
Now to the heart of this whole ride—'Shiftless Shuffle'. A high-octane blast of uptempo jazz-funk that feels like it escaped from the Headhunters vault. The electric piano is crackling, the groove is relentless, and the track just does not let go. It’s loose but tight, unhinged but precise. Herbie's synths fly over the rhythm like sparks off a live wire. It’s wild, it’s awake, and it’s got that fire that reminds you why fusion was such a revolution in the first place.
