Eubanks was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he began studying the violin at the age of 7 with good results, later becoming equally good at playing the piano and the trumpet. He says he fell in love with the guitar at a memorable #JamesBrown concert he had attended when he was 12 and then, when he announced to his parents that he would like to add the guitar to his instrumentation, they were far from happy at the thought of having to pay for other lessons. Nonetheless, he bought a guitar and began learning to play it on his own. His references were Wes Montgomery, #JohnMcLaughlin and #JimiHendrix. He played with Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Slide Hampton, and Sam Rivers before starting his own group in 1983. Like his brother Robin Eubanks, a jazz trombonisthe participated in studio recordings with Dave Holland.
