From Township to City: The Evolution of Vaughan

by cityofvaughan

The City of Vaughan is situated on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, which were acquired by the British government through Treaty 13, as well as the ancestral territory of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee. As the indigenous inhabitants of this land, the Mississaugas of the Credit occupied, controlled, and exercised stewardship of over 3.9 million acres of land, water and resources in Southern Ontario.

Incorporation of the Township of Vaughan – 1850
The beginnings of the City of Vaughan can be traced back to 1850 when the area was first incorporated as a Township, with a population of just over 6,000. Prior to the 1849 Robert Baldwin Act, communities in Upper Canada had no corporate existence and were overseen by the Crown. In 1850, the present municipal system came into operation in Vaughan, with the election of a Reeve and five Councillors.

From Township to Town – 1971
The 1970s saw significant change for Vaughan, with the amalgamation of various communities within York County. In 1971, the Township of Vaughan became the Town of Vaughan, with the Village of Woodbridge being incorporated into the latter. The Regional Municipality of York was also created during this time, replacing the former York County. With the creation of a Regional Government administration, the Police Village of Thornhill ceased to exist, and management of the community reverted to the newly created Towns of Markham and Vaughan.

The Incorporation of the City of Vaughan – 1991
On January 1st, 1991, Vaughan celebrated its new status as a City - the first municipality of York Region to attain such a distinction. This event marked a significant change to Vaughan’s presence on a global scale, with the beginning of numerous international partnerships and City Twinnings, beginning in 1992. The 1990s also continued Vaughan’s trend in growth and development as 60,000 new residents came to call the area home during this decade.

25th Anniversary and Beyond – 2016
In 2016, Vaughan celebrated its 25th Anniversary as a City, with various celebrations taking place throughout the year. Commemorative pins, logos, and a flag were created for this special occasion, as well as the inception of the Order of Vaughan - an award that recognized individuals who have made significant and enduring contributions to the City. Vaughan continues to be a City on the move.
