Sunrise and sunset are mostly noted for the associated changes in the colour of the sky especially around the sun. On some occasions, clouds will also reveal different colour patterns if present around sunrise and sunset.
This was taken last Thurs, today's sunrise colours are grey clouds. Isn't nature beautiful?
I don't like Mondays....have a great week or Sunday for those still in Sunday.

.....a fire in the sky
I woke up early yesterday morning and decided to make the most of the time and catch some sunrise shots. I was pleased to see there was a light mist on this small lake, which I think gives the image an interesting atmosphere. This is a 3 bracketed shot HDR using my tripod.
There are more of the same to come as I soon as I process them....

Since leaving the Midwest last year, I’ve been meaning to photograph the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge in downtown San Diego. The bridge connects the convention center with Petco Park (home to San Diego’s Major League Baseball team the Padres). At 550 feet, the bridge is one of the longest self-anchored pedestrian suspension bridges in the world and is supposed to look like a sail to fit in with San Diego's nautical history.
I took this photograph from the top floor of a parking garage. I like this view since it not only includes the new Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge, but also Petco Park, the new Central Library and the East Village District, which is San Diego's largest and most rapidly developing neighborhood.
Happy Travels!

I spend an hour or two with my brother yesterday. First I had a completely different idea but it ended up like this. My brother and I found some apples on our way to this spot and decided to use them in the photo. (it's not the same spot as the last photo - Fascination of light - I 35:52 I )
I really like this story myself.

These are the premises of the legendary Guy's of Cork - photographers, stationers, and publishers of Guy's Cork Almanacs and Directories. At no. 69 to the left is Allen, a drapers perhaps as a sign in the window proclaims that they have a Ready Made Department. At no. 71 is Russell - presumably Robert Russell, aged 71 on the 1901 census: Grocer and Provision Merchant (thanks Niall McAuley).
Also interesting for dating purposes perhaps is a poster on the archway leading to the church that advertises: Meeting: New Church. Is the church in the photo the "new church"? Is the meeting to be held there or is it about a new church elsewhere? (Obviously too much to hope that there'd be a clear date on the poster!)

This star trails image was done in ruins of the Steinschloss castle in Styria, Austria. The castle is already impressive by day, but spending the night in the ruins of this medieval fortification, with some bats as the only companions, is indeed an intense expirience.
Stack of 40 individual frames, each of 60 seconds exposure time (Canon EOS 550D, ISO 800, 10mm, f/3.5), resulting in a total exposure of 40 minutes. The ruins and the landscape were illuminated by the first quarter moon.

El Djem is famous for its amphitheater, often incorrectly called a Colosseum (roughly translated from Latin as 'that thing by the Colossus'), which is capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome (about 45,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre at El Djem was built by the Romans under proconsul Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor at Thysdrus, around 238 and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races (like in Ben-Hur). Many tourists come here to see what it was like to be inside what was once a place where lions and people met their fate. Much of it is crumbled but the essence of it still remains. It is also possible that construction of the amphitheatre was never finished.
Until the 17th century it remained more or less whole. From then on its stones were used for building the nearby village of El Djem and transported to the Great Mosque in Kairouan, and at a tense moment during struggles with the Ottomans, the Turks used cannons to flush rebels out of the amphitheatre.
The ruins of the amphitheatre were declared a World Heritage Site in 1979.
Drifting sand is preserving the market city of Thysdrus and the refined suburban villas that once surrounded it. The amphiteatre occupies archaeologists' attention: no digging required. Some floor mosaics have been found and published, but field archaeology has scarcely been attempted.
In the world of writing materials, Thysdrus lay in the Empire of Papyrus, which preserves remarkably well if kept as dry as at El Djem..
********
The amphitheater was used for filming some of the scenes from the 1979 Monty Python film The Life of Brian and was also used for filming some of the scenes from the Academy Award (Oscar) winning film Gladiator with Russel Crowe. In the old days when it was used for real gladiators, the gladiators would be kept in dungeons under ground. The star shaped holes in front being their only lightsource. Hope you all have a great weekend!

I found out that this pelican has been a resident of the Imperial Beach Fishing Pier for the last 6–7 years. I don't know if that is a tall fishing tale {but I would appreciate it if anyone from IB could weigh in on that assertion to confirm or deny}.
All I know is that I saw him for the first time yesterday ... and then again this morning. I knew it was the same pelican because he favored his right foot. He was quite amenable to being photographed and I got quite close. The close up shots are really good, but I loved this shot the best as it captured the gorgeous morning light streaming down the pier and the distant fisherman. My shot was leached of color for the most part so sliding this right into a black & white was a no-brainer! And most of you know I don't do b&w ... so this is an unusual appearance in my Photostream!!

The Old Republic Building is a high-rise building in Chicago. This was the first high-rise in the area east of Michigan Avenue between the river and Grant Park, and when it was built it enjoyed high visibility.
Its construction finished on 1925 and was designed by Vitzhum and Burns. When it was constructed, at just 24 stories, it was considered a classic skyscraper in every sense of the word. Its height, style, and location demonstrated all of the attributes that when put together make a great skyscraper at the time.
Located on the northeast corner of North Michigan Avenue and East South Water Street, the Old Republic Building was one of the first tall buildings, along with the London Guarantee Building, to be constructed south of the Chicago River on North Michigan Avenue after its widening in the early 1920s. The building exemplifies the city’s efforts to encourage commercial development on the avenue as a result of major improvements brought about by Burnham and Bennett’s 1909 Plan of Chicago. The construction of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, the widening of the avenue and the construction of the bi-level roadway at South Water Street and Wacker Drive in the 20th century changed the face of Michigan Avenue in particular, and the downtown in general.
One thing that caughts ones attentions is the "Betsy Ross" 13-star US Flag outside the building, which was one of the biggest symbols of the American Revolution.

When the breezes calm down and there's no boat traffic on the Willamette River the water get's smooth enough to see the underwater portion of the Ross Island Bridge Cyclotron and Linear Accelerator, see notes.
Most particle accelerators are horizontal structures on top of or under ground serving only one purpose. But OSU realized that their design could also easily double as a bridge for city traffic, and thus the city was able to get this nice bridge for just half the price it would have paid otherwise. Based on the Ross Island success and needing a linear accelerator capable of handling light rail sized particles a new Linear Accelerator Bridge OSU/city collaboration is currently under construction just down river from here. Back on 20th Dec 1994, a major derailmet happened at Waterfall in the Southern Suburbs of Sydney just before the morning peak.
Seen here is the lead car of set S3 with the 2nd 4 cars being set 8 (can't remeber car numbers). S3/S8 ran into the train on platform 1 being sets S13/S11 (once again can't remember car numbers). S3/ S8 came out of the shunt neck at the south end of Waterfall Yard.
The footbridge was propelled onto the up main, 8163 was sent from the south and 8038/ 42213 weresent from the north to move the remaining cars out of the so they could eventually remove the damged cars.

Get Pushed: I was paired with PKcam for R25. Her push was:
Because your shots of others are so intriguing, I'm going to use that as part of the challenge. We all go through struggles, high moments, low moments, etc. The only constant is change. For you I would like you to convey where you are in your life right now (whether it is how you are feeling on the day you are shooting, or a frame of mind you've been in for a particular period of time up until now) by recognizing it in others and capturing it for the viewer. Perhaps this could be seen as an abstract self portrait. If you would like to do it as a diptych or triptych that is okay as well.
This was both difficult and intriguing. Above is the result. I have been away from home for a long time - almost a year. I returned a week ago. I should be happy. I won't explain more than that; the shot should stand on its own. But I am interested in what people think the feeling is - so by extension how successful I was in capturing it.

Situated at the heart of the Olympiapark München in northern Munich, the stadium was built as the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics.
Designed by the German architect Günther Behnisch and the engineer Frei Otto, the Olympiastadion was considered revolutionary for its time. This included large sweeping canopies of acrylic glass stabilized by steel cables that were used for the first time on a large scale. The idea was to imitate the Alps and to set a counterpart to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, held during the Nazi regime. The sweeping and transparent canopy was to symbolize the new, democratic and optimistic Germany. This is reflected in the official motto: "The Happy Games". They were not as happy as intended due to the attack on the Israeli team and the horrible fail of the overstrained police in Munich.
With an original capacity of 80,000, the stadium also hosted many major football matches including the 1974 World Cup Final and the Euro '88 Final. It hosted the European Cup Finals of 1979, 1993 and 1997.
The Olympiapark, found in the area of Munich known as the "Oberwiesenfeld" ("upper meadow-field"), the Park continues to serve as a venue for cultural, social, and religious events such as events of worship.

Oh, I'm so excited to post you this 'cause I think this is my favorite piece so far. Yesterday came into my mind that we incidentally have a loft... a really big one actually. My dad helped to get up there... it was gorgeous - but really dusty, I have to admit. I spent 1,5 hour up there and when I came down in the light, I looked so awful that even I was afraid of myself. Anyway, I'm really content with this and hope you'll like it too. Reminds me of one of my first shots... this one.

The first recorded ascent of Mont Blanc was on 8 August 1786 by Jacques Balmat and the doctor Michel Paccard.of modern mountaineering. The first woman to reach the summit was Marie Paradis in 1808.
Now the summit is ascended by 200000 mountaineer-tourists each year and could be considered an easy, yet long, ascent for someone who is well trained and used to the altitude.
Every year the Mont Blanc massif takes many victims, however, and in peak weekends normally around August) the local rescue service flies an average of 12 missions, mostly directed towards people in trouble on one of the normal routes of the mountain. There are courses that require knowledge of high-altitude mountaineering, a guide or at least a veteran mountaineer), and proper equipment. It is a long course that includes delicate passages and the hazard of rock slides.
This is a place really magnificent to visit !!
The skyline of San Francisco's famous financial district as seen from Pier 14 during evening nautical twilight. This was shot during our Night Eyes Photo Workshop last night with fellow instructor Matt Granz. We were showing our class the many interesting subjects along the waterfront, including the ferry building tower and Sinbad's sign. It is a lovely sight indeed from the end of the pier.
To the far right, one can see the Embarcadero Towers and the tip of the Transamerica building poking up from behind. To the left, more great skscrapers including some elegant condos. Just out of frame to the left is the West anchorage of the Bay Bridge.

The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps.
The cable car to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m. There are two sections: from Chamonix to Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 m and then directly, without any support pillar, to the upper station at 3,777 m (the building contains an elevator to the summit). The span of the second section is 2,867 m measured directly, but only 2,500 m measured horizontally. Thus it remains the second longest span width, measured directly. The tramway travels from Chamonix to the top of the Aiguille du Midi – an altitude gain of over 2,800 m – in 20 minutes. An adult ticket from Chamonix (as of 9/5/2012 to 30/11/2012) is €52.20 return.
The Aiguille summit contains a panoramic viewing platform, a cafe and a gift shop. The Vallée Blanche ski run begins here, and the nearby Cosmiques Refuge is the starting point for one of the routes to the Mont Blanc summit. From the Aiguille another cable car (summer months only), the Vallee Blanche Aerial Tramway crosses the Glacier du Geant to Pointe Helbronner (3,462 m) at the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif. Pointe Helbronner is served with a cable car from La Palud, a village near Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley (Italy).

View on parts of the city Schluchsee (Germany) and same named lake from the tower (Riesenbühlturm, sorry only in German) on top of the mountain Riesenbühl.
The Schluchsee is a reservoir lake in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, southeast of the Titisee in the Black Forest near Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
The Schluchsee, with its height of 930 metres above sea level, is the highest reservoir in Germany and also the largest lake in the Black Forest. By contrast the Hornberg Basin (Hornbergbecken), is 1,048 metres above sea level, but is the upper basin of a pumped storage hydropower station, rather than a reservoir.
The water of the reservoir is relatively cool even in summer because of its high elevation.
The best-known settlements around the Schluchsee are on its northern shores and include the eponymous town of Schluchsee and the hamlets of Seebrugg by the dam itself and Aha. The Three Lakes Railway, an extension of the Höllentalbahn, runs from Titisee station along the northern shore to the terminus at Seebrugg.
The Schluchsee is surrounded by numerous walking trails in the local area. The entire length of the shoreline, about 18 km long, is walkable, mostly level and suitable for prams. From May to October the walks may be combined with boat trips on the pleasure cruiser St. Nikolaus (en.wikipedia).
Nice to view Large On Black

Fall migrants and post-breeding dispersal birds start moving through Central Florida in June, although peak songbird migration isn't until late September. I found this Prairie Warbler flycatching in my yard this summer. It would fly out into a pack of small flies, nab one and return to the same branch. It did this repeatedly for about five minutes, which made for some nice photo opportunities.
