Not been out with the camera far too windy, this is one of the pink series, a few more being saved for a rainy day LOL, I know I'll not get a shot like this for another year, I'll have to wait for the Rhododendrons to flower again, hoping that I'll start seeing more Common Darters soon, seems a long wait :)

This male Terrier Mix is new at a small farm where I visit often. They have a GSD mix, Border Collie and Australian Shepherd also. The larger dogs get to run free and help with the farm duties but this little guy was tethered to his dog house. I guess they're worried about him getting run over. Looking a bit lonely and bored, he was happy to pose for my camera.

Rhodes(Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos, IPA: [ˈro̞ðo̞s]; Italian: Rodi; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes) is a Greek island approximately 18 kilometres (11 mi) southwest of Turkey in eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, with a population of 117,007[2] of which 53,709 resided in the homonymous capital city of the island.

Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today Rhodes is a tourist destination.

The island of Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead, 79.7 km (49.5 mi) long and 38 km (24 mi) wide, with a total area of approximately 1,400 square kilometres (541 sq mi) and a coastline of approximately 220 km (137 mi). The city of Rhodes is located at the northern tip of the island, as well as the site of the ancient and modern commercial harbours.

In the 1st century AD, the Emperor Tiberius spent a brief term of exile on Rhodes, and Saint Paul brought Christianity to the island. Rhodes reached her zenith in the third century, and was then by common consent the most civilized and beautiful city in Hellas. In 395, the long Byzantine Empire period began for Rhodes, when the Roman Empire was split and the eastern half gradually became a Greek empire. Although part of Byzantium for the next thousand years, Rhodes was nevertheless repeatedly attacked by various forces. It was first occupied by Muslim forces of Muawiyah I in 672. Much later, Rhodes was retrieved for the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus during the First Crusade.

In 1309 the Byzantine era came to an end when the island was occupied by forces of the Knights Hospitaller. Under the rule of the newly named "Knights of Rhodes", the city was rebuilt into a model of the European medieval ideal. Many of the city's famous monuments, including the Palace of the Grand Master, were built during this period.

The strong walls which the Knights had built withstood the attacks of the Sultan of Egypt in 1444, and of Mehmed II in 1480. Ultimately, however, Rhodes fell to the large army of Suleiman the Magnificent in December 1522, long after the rest of the Byzantine empire had been lost. The few surviving Knights were permitted to retire to the Kingdom of Sicily. The Knights would later move their base of operations to Malta. The island was thereafter a possession of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries.

I'm thinking this could become very addictive. After receiving an alert on my phone and finding the kp had shot up to 8 (very high chance of aurora in the UK) I scoured the weather looking for somewhere to escape the thick cloud over Aberdeen. This was taken between Portknockie and Findochty on the Moray coastline, Northern Scotland. Most of the night there appeared to be only an arc but at this point we could see rays shooting upwards. It was difficult to visualise well with the naked eye due to the sun not being far below the horizon, and the cloud cover was a bit excessive most of the night but overall definitely worth the trip.

You can also follow me on Facebook. I plan to upload information on aurora sightings in NE Scotland as close to real time as possible

vida o castigo solo deseo tenerla contigo,

vida o castigo solo deseo beberla contigo,

vida o castigo solo deseo morirme contigo... (Rosana Arbelo)

Am back again after another short break, another work trip and therefore no time for my camera :(

I have had a lot of transit time to think about new experiments and I've decided to work on them in the next couple of days so hopefully, you will see something fresh and new from me soon. In the meanwhile, here is another one of my earlier images, treated in a different manner.

This is like old wine in a new bottle but am not sure this is going to rock anybody's world. Thanks for looking up!

I'll visit your streams today and check your work out. Have a good day my dear friends!

I've been in kind of a colorful mood lately.

There's been some beautiful light out there on the streets.

You'd never catch me shooting in color after the sun sets...

But when I ran into this woman I ran into a polytonic explosion!

The shadows were growing long and it was gettin' to be the 'golden hour.'

She was a lot of fun to shoot...

And her personality was as warm and as colorful as her self.

When I first bumped into her I was shooting in black and white...

She asked to see the picture and before she finshed objecting to the mono magic I had switched that sweet D300 to the technicolor mode and I shot her as we talked.

It's been the most amazing summer I can remember in a long time.

Nothin' but love and light.

When you're walking on sunshine the world can see that.

The 'light seeks the light.'

I hope you've enjoyed your summer so far.

It's movin' fast.

Faces on the street

Chicago 7.23.11

35mm 1.8 cropped square and contrast and expo danced around until those reflections in her glasses looked magical.

I'm back from Kauai with as many good photos as I've made in all of my previous trips to Hawaii combined, but with no huge winter waves of course. I really lucked out with the light I think. So here is a good place to start. The start of the day in Hanalai.

The clouds were heavy before sunrise but they cleared out just enough to allow the sun to light up the 4,000 ft. mountain range behind the beach. Without that light, the scene did not have the punch and depth that is does in this photo. Summer is when the light strikes across the mountains at the best angle.

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

I spent a good huge chunk load of gigabytes taking shots of the reflections off of the Arno River while in Florence. Will post a few more of them going forward, loved the reflections was entranced by them.

Anyway, hope everyone is doing well and having a great weekend!!

HSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Saturday, we spent the day visiting local farms to learn more about where our food comes from and how it is produced (part of the natural food coops 'Eat Local Farm Tour' program). Our favorite, which is where I shot this photo, was an organic farm north of the Twin Cities that teaches farmers how to grow and become certified organic farmers. It was an amazing place to spend the afternoon. I was giddy when I opened the car door and found chickens running around the grounds and racing toward me (not a common site for a city girl but one that I LOVE!). They also treated us to fresh goodies they had just picked including sungold tomatoes (to die for - they were like popping sugar cubes only better), broccoli, cukes, zucchini and homemade iced tea and lemonade (which tasted so good since the heat index was over 100'F... again).

Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead and a Happy August 1st!

Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater)

Location: East Java, Indonesia

Coordinates: 8.058°S 114.242°E

Elevation: 2,799 m (9,183 ft)

Type: Stratovolcano

Last eruption: 1999

Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater) is a nature reserve Ijen Park is located between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso District, East Java, Indonesia. This crater exactly located at the top of Mount Ijen which is one of a series of volcanoes in East Java such as Raung, Bromo, Semeru and Merapi.

This beautiful warm crater lake with its blue-greenish water look very inviting but it corrosive and dangerous! Kawah Ijen is the world's largest highly acidic volcanic lake. The crater size is about 960 meters x 600 meters with a depth of 200 meters is so acidic that it can dissolve clothes and human flesh. The acid measure is almost zero (pH<0.5) about similar to the strength of car battery acid.

With the elevation 2,799 m (9,183 ft), cold air with temperatures 10° Celsius, the temperature might reach 2° Celsius will increase the sensation of its own experience. Various plants that exist only in the highlands can also be found here, such as Edelweis Flowers and Pine.

The best time to start hiking to Kawah Ijen is early morning. From either Arabica or Catimore homestay, takes for about 30 minutes driving to Paltuding Starting Point. Enthusiast hikers even leave the homestay at 4 am or earlier, so they can reach the crater on time for sunrise.

From the parking lot, a well-worn 3km track leads us up to the volcano rim. At first, heading up through the shady casuarinas forest, the track is wide and flat but it is just the beginning and gradually it rises up with some steep sections. After about 2 km walking, there is a shelter up there, Pondok (shelter) – the post to weigh the miner’s sulfur load where they can get a promissory note to exchange it later with cash money at the base camp.

Just about 1 km from pondok, the trail thankfully flattened out all the way to the crater’s rim as we are welcomed by smelling sulfur fumes. From the edge, we need to climb another 300meters down a narrow steep path to the lakeside to get the best pictures.

As alternative, the panoramic view can be seen obviously just hike up for about 1km to the northern-east of the crater and follow the track, a breathtaking view of stunning turquoise lake brings us to this magnificent.

In terms of total area, the Raurisertal is one of the largest expanses of valley in the Hohe Tauern range. In contrast to many others, it is not used merely as a grazing area during the summer, having been an important site of settlement for many centuries. Since 1984, large areas in both of its side valleys, the Hüttwinkeltal and Seidlwinkeltal, have belonged to the Hohe Tauern National Park. Together with the National Park Region which surrounds the Rauris Valley, we encounter special features and natural treasures that are so rich in variety, we are often said to be a separate "world" within the Hohe Tauern National Park. The national park Hohe Tauern is with 1,800 km2 the biggest protective area of Austria and the whole east alps. It applies about wide primeval landscapes with glaciers and cliff faces, alpine pastures and cultured alpine pastures. The variety of 2663 thousand mountain picks, 1000 mountain lakes, 342 glaciers with a total area of 185 km2 as well as the rich fauna and flora fill with enthusiasm since centuries. Over 295 km of marked hiking paths give you the perfect opportunity to get to know the beautiful Rauris Valley. The ultimate nature adventure. Offering beautiful scenery and outstanding hiking are the romantic Seidlwinkel Valley, with the 500-year-old Rauriser Tauernhaus, the Krumltal and Bräualm where you'll also walk alongside the roosts of the recently reintroduced Bearded Vultures. And let's not forget the uniquely beautiful Kolm-Saigurn valley head with the High Sonnblick or Rauriser Sonnblick. A meteorological observatory and an alpine hut - Zittlhaus are located at it's peak of 3106m height. The alpine hut is open in the summer months. The snow pack on slopes with sunny exposures are strongly influenced by sunshine. Daily cycles of mild thawing Strong freeze thaw cycles will result in the formation of surface crusts during the night, and the formation of unstable isothermal snow during the day. Slopes in the lee of a ridge or other wind obstacle accumulate more snow and are more likely to include pockets of abnormally deep snow when disturbed, may trigger an avalanche. On extremely steep slopes like here above, generally small sized wet snow avalanches can be naturally triggered. Every year, a number of avalanche deaths occur in Austria's alpine regions. Many occur when skiers/snowboarders stray from the designated ski slopes. Always check weather forecasts (snow, thunder) before you leave and adjust the walk if necessary. Take suitable clothes, equipment, food and drink to cope with the unexpected.

And finally at the snow border, once again: snow, snow, just look at the snow! This mountain range, just like the neighbouring Glocknergruppe, forms part of the Hoher Tauern National Park, one of the most beautiful areas in Austria. Given their altitude, the Hoher Sonnblick mountain range here remain snow covered until relatively late in the season. But always be aware such deep snowpack and spring weather are creating the potential for powerful dangerous avalanches. Beautiful but dangerous.

Val Thorens located in the Tarentaise Valley, Savoie, French Alps, is the highest ski resorts in Europe, at 2300 m altitude.

Given the high altitude of Val Thorens and the Glacier de Péclet the resort is often regarded as "snow sure". With the winter season lasting into early May and summer skiing on the glacier.

Many of its slopes face north and north-west, providing for good snow conditions. This means that the slopes are not as sunny, so the resort tends to attract a crowd more interested in skiing than "terracing." However, the resort itself faces south, and many people enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine when they have finished skiing. As well as a combination of 68 marked runs, Val Thorens also 5 terrain parks giving access to bordercross tracks, quarter pipes and jumps.

Val Thorens is the most international ski resort in France: more than 70% of its visitors are foreigners. While one will find people from all over the world in Val Thorens, British, Scandinavian, Belgian, Dutch and German tourists make up the majority.
