Seglora Church (Seglora kyrka) comes from a parish in Västergötland. The old wooden church dating from 1730 was abandoned when a new church, built of stone, was erected in 1903.

The church was built of local materials; the plinth is of gneiss and the walls made of wood. Both the roof and the walls are lined with oak shingles on the outside and these are painted with a mixture of tar and traditional red paint. The tower was built in the 1780s. Prior to that the bells hung in a separate belfry. The organ is from 1770.

Hanging in the porch is a long rod that the verger used for waking parishioners who fell asleep during the sermon. Each farm had its own pews in the church. Women and men sat on opposite sides of the aisle; women to the left and men to the right. This custom lived on in the countryside into the 20th century.

The wooden church was moved to Skansen in 1916 and found a new lease of life as one of Sweden’s most popular churches for weddings.

My son-in-law James and I hit the trail for an early morning hike to Boynton Canyon. The trail was quite rugged. It snaked through a number of rocky gulches and ravines that were littered with boulders and rocks..

The going was tough at times, and I had to keep my eyes on the ground to keep from tripping over the smaller rocks that were littered about like children's toys in a messy nursery. The rewards were great though, as the colors and rock formations were other-worldly.

The downside is, my hip has been killing me ever since--as they say, no pain no gain. When I look at this photo, I see faces in the rocks.

Inner Narthex: Cycle of the Life of the Virgin

Three bays of the inner narthex are devoted to the story of the Virgin, from miraculous birth to miraculous pregnancy. The unfamiliar subject is based on the Protevangelium, or Apocryphal Gospel of St. James, which was widely accepted during the Middle Ages. The Genealogy of Christ fills the two dome mosaics of the inner narthex in the northern and southern bays [7-81]. The mosaic encrusted domes are known as pumpkin domes with undulating, faceted surfaces. The result is multiple curves that capture the light from many angles, creating a shimmering surface and suffusing the interior with a golden glow. The Bust of the Virgin, surrounded by the royal ancestry, is in the north dome and the Bust of Christ is in the south dome.

The Netherlands is a small country of 16 million people, but it boasts a quarter of a million competitive speedskaters, and millions more who skate for fun. What's the story? Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Infinite sea of ice is perfect for ice skating journeys. Ice skating is not only a Dutch sport, it also underwrites the history, art and culture of the Netherlands. Perhaps most importantly a good freeze provides the Dutch a chance to discover the wilderness and an outdoor challenge within their own landscape. The Netherlands are a long distance skater's dream. Hundreds of kilometres of potential routes can carry the skater to the heart of a wild landscape. Today after 4 years we went ice skating on the Ankeveense Plassen.

The Ankeveense Plassen is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Photo taken of Dutch people on the lakes of Ankeveen. A first time skating in 2017 is such a rare occurrence.

Opvallend veel Amsterdammers zoeken hun toevlucht in Ankeveen.

L'abbatiale Saint Philibert - vue d'ensemble

Tournus - Bourgogne du Sud / South Burgundy - France

I have been living in Burgundy (near Mâcon) for more than twenty years. And yet, i had never since nowadays visited Saint-Philibert Abbey in Tournus, at about 30 km from Macon. It was time to repair this oblivion ...

I was not disappointed, it is worth the detour, it is a magnificent Romanesque building built between the Xth century and the XIIth century.

The exterior of the abbey church is not very spectacular, it makes a very massive ensemble, almost like a fortress. I found remarkable the interior of the abbey with its Romananesque vaults in transverse cradles. This is what makes the abbey famous.

The church houses the tomb of Saint-Philibert.

Saint-Philibert was a monk, he had founded the abbey of Jumièges in Normandy in 654. At his death, he had been buried on the island of Noirmoutiers. Later, in 836, to escape the Norman invasions, monks carried off his relics, and the chance of their peregrinations led them as far as Tournus, where the relics were at last deposed in the year 875.

Light and shadow

We are not very far from the top the Roche de Solutré (Solutre's rock) and the village of Solutre shines in the sun below us, as the shadow imperceptibly grows. White frost has remained intact since the morning and sprinkles the hillsides among some patches of mist.

In the distance, the Mont-Blanc, more and more visible, shines over a sea of clouds that covers the whole plain of the Saône River.

And I'm repeating myself that I did well to go out because i had never seen this place like this! But the most beautiful was yet to come ...

I usually like to pick only one favorite shot to publish from a specific vista or location, even if I have hundreds of others just as worthy. But I simply could not resist publishing this one from the same meadow, even if this is pano is similar to two other already published shots.

This panorama is made up of 7 portrait exposures stitched in Lightroom, edited also in Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro. The resultant photo is about 10k x 5k pixels. Go full screen and press L for the highest resolution available.

Thank you very much for all the faves and comments.
