Another route branding scheme on the Reading Enviro400EV fleet is for the Claret 21, applied to six of the initial delivery of 24 vehicles. As with the others, it looks well, and it is clear that the operator has pushed the boat out to make the biggest impression possible with its opening battery-electric fleet. Here 21 (RG21 ZEB) is seen in the town centre.

Battista "Pinin" Farina, the famous Italian cachbuilder always dreamt of creating a car bearing his name. In March 2019, Automobili Pininfarina unveiled the Battista. The Battista will be an all-electric hyper GT car to clients from 2020. 90 years after Battista founded Carrozzria Pininfarina, the Battista will be launched as Italy's most powerful and fastest car. Paolo Pininfarina, Michael Perschke, CEO of Automobili Pininfarina and Mahindra & Mahindra Chairman, Anand Mahindra, confirm that the limited-edition hypercard Battista will be the fastest and most powerful car ever designed and produced in Italy. Power and torque equate to 1.900 hp and 2.300 Nm respectively, meaning the Battista has the potential to accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds, faster than a Formula 1 car, and break the 250 mph top speed barrier - all with a potential zero emissions range of over 300 miles. No more than 150 Battistas will be available from late-2020.

Newport Bus has taken very well to the Yutong brand and now the majority of its fleet is from that Chinese manufacturer in battery-electric form. Recently it became the first UK operator to take delivery of the U11DD double-decker, which itself debuted in demonstrator form around a year ago. The U11DD is a bus that is as distinctive-looking from the front as it is the back. These are also the first zero-emission double-deckers in Wales and utilise the same driveline as fitted to the E10 and E12 single-deck buses, and at least the TCe12 among the two Yutong battery-electric coaches that are sold in the UK. Here 418 (CK24 AUH) departs from its home city bound for Cardiff on a 30 journey.
Perhaps the first Australian-built buses for the UK are a batch of Custom Denning Element battery-electric examples delivered to Rotala Group. They are relatively well spread around its operations, with some in Burton-upon-Trent at the Diamond Bus East Midlands business, which was formerly Midland Classic.
More are due, and indeed Custom Denning has big plans for its products in the wider UK market. Premises in the East Midlands have been secured, a regional Managing Director appointed, and talk now is of a battery-electric coach to come in 2027. Manufacture in the UK is a longer-term aspiration, but it is on the agenda.
Custom Denning and Rotala are closely linked, which is no doubt the reason for the group's decision to import from Australia. Both are part of the Dunn family, which came to prominence some decades ago with Dunn-Line of Nottingham. Bob and son Simon own Rotala; other son Scott owns Custom Denning after emigrating to Australia, and before that owned Your Bus of Heanor.
The Elements at Burton were part-funded by the government's Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas scheme, hence the sticker above the signalling window. Here 39005 (BX25 GNU) pauses outside the town's railway station.

Historic bullet.
Camille Jenatzy owed his reputation to straight-line, even if corners didn't pose a problem. He set his first record at 66,6 km/h : that's probably the reason of his nickname Red Devil (and he wore a red beard). Four months later, he hit an amazing 105 km/h, still talked about today. It was the first time a man exceeded 100 km/h by any manner of means. He did it in this car whose extreme streamlining is confined to its upper section.

One of the early beneficiaries of the first round of the government's Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas fund in England was Warrington's Own Buses. It received a good chunk of funding towards conversion of its entire fleet to battery-electric and the associated infrastructure, which includes a new depot. 105 Volvo BZLs with the customary MCV bodywork are on order, with a claimed completion date for the transition of before the end of 2024. Naturally, Volvo is very keen to hitch its wagon to this horse. To that end, one of its BZL demonstrators has gained the new yellow livery for Warrington's Own Buses that will come with the electrified fleet. Here BV72 KPF is seen at Carden Park Hotel at a recent conference.

The Alexander Dennis Enviro100EV has a monopoly on bus purchases in London in its size class, with there being no suitable zero-emission competition. Optare and Switch Mobility have packed up and taken the Versa EV with them, while the Yutong E9 product in this field does not satisfy Bus Safety Standard requirements mandated by Transport for London. Some reasonable business has thus been done by Alexander Dennis with its 'big little bus' in the capital. Go-Ahead London has 47 of them in use. They can be seen on some routes in and around Orpington, such as the R1. Here SEO9 (YX25 OBR) passes through that town while working a journey to Green Street Green.

Five BYD ADL Enviro400EV battery-electric double-deckers are with First Leeds, where they are branded for park-and-ride route PR3 to Stourton in this rather busy livery. They are nothing if not distinctive. Here 38402 (LG21 HZW) passes through central Leeds, in true First style operating a route other than what it is branded for as it heads for Temple Green on the PR2 service. Noticeable on closer inspection is that it has rear-view cameras in place of conventional mirrors - the latest fad, and one that experience suggests still has a bit of a way to go in some cases.
