Denizen of the lower levels of the forest understory, this little beauty is a tough one to get the focus on. Constantly foraging on the journey South, they never sit still and are most of the time " behind something" and in the DARK. I was fortunate to have it briefly in the open in a shaft of light.

Now I have reached the equivalent nr. of species as last year.

It is getting tougher as the time goes on.Photographed in my backyard. (There is even a hint of orange visible on the crown).

As (my) luck would have it and against all "ODDS" I spotted this elusive cousin of the Sora quietly slipping through the marsh vegetation. Not often long enough in the open to focus on him but I managed. It looks like they have returned once more to our area.

This was probably one of the dreariest days in the life of this out of it's way flycatcher. Not normally seen around here. However I liked the Fall colours in this miserable looking bird image.

You don't see too many 60-year-old cars on the road anymore. I was part of a photography walk and shoot group doing some street photography in Fitzroy. Nobody else took any interest, but I was very excited to see an XP Falcon parked outside a coffee shop.

Every year I search the woods and fields for the dropped antlers of deer, called sheds. This happens during Feb.,March and even as late as Apr. Some bucks shed them earlier others later. I have no explanation for that.It is always a very pleasing surprise to find one and even nicer if I locate the matching side of the same buck. This has only happend a few times in all the years I have been doing this. It takes me out and if I use the snowshoes it is also a good physical excersice. From this time on the bucks start to grow new antlers. Covered in a velvety skin which is the blood supplying cover under which the bone grows larger and larger. By September the growing stops and the bucks start to rubb the velvet off by using shrubs, trees fenceposts etc. Now they are ready for the upcoming rut which starts in Nov. Fighting ensues between bucks but no antlers come off. However tines (as shown on the antler above) and even half an antler may break. Than something happens between the "pedicel" which is the part of the skull from which the antler grows and the base of the antler, causing it to drop. Amazing !.

This must be the most entertaining duck I know. Doing his courtship "bubble making" ritual always make me laugh.

Spotted this coyote far away in a bare field where it was mousing. Snowing lightly.

As soon as I stopped the vehicle it vacated.

Finally we are seeing some finches.

Something odd I noticed. What is this coot doing so close to the muskrat. Well, the muskrat was the one doing the work by diving to the bottom and bringing up some fresh aquatic plants to eat . The coot just helped itself. Freeloader !.

This Red fox zig-zagged the small grassy field obviously in search for rodents etc. to feed it's kits.

With the miserable weather we had the ducks were loafing along the shoreline vegetation.

Keep on coming, just keep on coming, was my thought.

Sitting in one of my wildlife observation spots I noticed this coyote working its way slowly through the grasses, coming towards me. With the light breeze in my favour I could squeeze off several shots before the coyote became suspicious of the shutter sound, slowly turned around and disappeared the same way as it came.

While I was trying to follow this guy going up the tree it was like panning for gold. Then he stopped and started preening.Ha,now I got a "nugget".

This one took a break from its rambunctious siblings to meet up with its mom.

This seems to work both ways.

While I was observing five playful fox kits, the vixen was watching me and the kits at the same time but stayed at a good distance.

Torn between curiosity and flight it definitely could not figure things out and decided to leave the scene. I just loved the encounter. It definately was worth the 3 hours of sitting still.

It is not only us these big, hairy, blood-thursty marsh mosquitoes are after.
