Poppy's Birthday

12/4/13

7:19am

4.185Kg's

56cm

I was just about to write to a friend who had a home birth to say how great that was and how it was something that I would love to be able to provide but would probably never have the guts to do and then Poppy decide's she doesn't want to wait.

What a morning!

Here's the story..... a few nights ago a neighbours' dog has been barking for hours on end for the second night in a row. I got annoyed so wrote a letter that I felt wasn't rude but one that asked the owner, who ever they were, if they could do something about it. Well the next day a guy turns up to the front door asking if I'd writen the letter. He told me he'd felt it was quite rude as that day before he got home he'd had three people die on him and that his girlfriend had left him recently. Well it turns out he is a paramedic and works at night and that's why his dog barks all night long.

Fast forward two days later and Paveena is in heavy labour and there's no time to get to the hospital who do I turn to? yep the sleeping paramedic neighbour who I'd just in his mind rudely asked him to shut his dog up. He hurry's in and immediately starts to assist her while I'm on the phone to 000. Baby Poppy was delivered 10 mins later on the Couch. Ambulance turns up 5 mins after her delivery.

Amazing how life turns out sometimes. If I'd not written that letter I'd never have known about Paul.

I told him I don't care anymore, he can let his dog bark as much as he likes.

I saw that wall near to Pantheon in Rome. As you see it's not the usual wall you see every day. This one got lots of padlocks sticked to it with names writen to each of them.

If anyone knows the reason why people do this, please don't be shy and let me know. =)

JIMMY DONLEY

Born James Kenneth Donley, 17 August 1929

Died 20 March 1963

I first heard Jimmy Donley's name in an old Let It Rock mag ( a pioneering mainstream UK music mag, which had great features on many 50s heroes) or Record Mirror early 70s article on Swamp Pop. Whilst Jivin Gene, Cookie & the Cupcakes and Johnnie Allen became household favs (when my mam was out) Jimmy remained an enigmatic mystery, a shared label credit or two on some early 60s Domino sides, a Jerry Lee album track and also on a Billy Swan lp. Despite Bill Millar ,Charlie Gillete and Flyright 's pioneering dips into Swamp pop/Southern fringe music I heard no more about the man until Stu Colman played Jimmy's waycool The Shape You left Me In on a radio show, where he stunned me by saying Jimmy had comitted suicide in 1963. In 1987 Cliff White informed me that he was helping put together a Decca anthology on Jimmy for Charly records. This great vinyl compilation of 15 Decca tracks from 57-60 is a gem, try to track it down. Sadly there is no CD collection of Jimmy's Decca sides, despite my semi regular mailing to Bear Family's suggestion box. Happily, Edsel have a great cd of his early 60s Teardrop label songs and some demos cut for the infamous Huey Meaux's Crazy Cajun labels.

Cajun rocker Johnnie Allen has written (alongside Dr Bernice Webb) Jimmy's biography, Born To Be A Loser, but despite several US visits I've yet to track it down. Johnnie's notes in the Edsel cd (writen in 1998) indicate that a Californian movie company was making a video movie based on the book but I can find no trace of it being issued. File next to the many proposed but never issued films on Vincent, Cochran or even Joe Clay ( where the great Jack Nicholson was mooted as going to portray him in a film). Now he was agreat great songwriter but he never had a million selling hit to his name so why would he warrant a book and movie? Well, gentle reader, this synopsis of his life may indicate the complex life lead by this forgotten southern songrwriter .

Jimmy was born James Kenneth Donley on August 17th, 1929. He grew up in Jonestown Mississippi, the wrong side of the tracks in the town of Gulfport, now the Dixie Vegas. His mother Myrtle was musical amd doted on her son. His father James Gilmore "Tag" Donley however regarded music as an unmanly interest. Tag forced Jimmy to quit school at 14 to work unloading the banana boats at the Gulfport dock ( Day-o!). He developed a keen interest in music throughout his teenage years, encouraged by his mam he became a talented vocalist and multi instrumentalist. He told his fellow musicians that he would on day be a big star. These happy teenage years ended when he enlisted in the US Army in 1948. After being sent abroad he developed terrible homesickness, missing his mother and little sister. Like a future musical army sargeant, he developed a drug habit to help him cope with the rigours of army life and his overseas posting. His behaviour deteriorated and he was finally given an undesirable discharge in 1949. Family and friends soon saw great changes in him, no longer happy-go-lucky, he was showing signs of schizophrenic mood swings. His personal problems lead to him marrying four times in four years. Each on of his wives adored him but he abused them badly and quickly tired of each one.His sister Myrna put this restlessness down to an inner desire to search for happiness.

His love for his mother drove him to strive to succeed and improve their circumstances via his musical talents. By 1956 some local music promoters (including Pee Wee Maddux) manged to arrange a deal with no less than Decca Records. Jimmy recorded with Owen Bradley in Nashville. From Feb 1957 we have the swinging sax laden Kickin My Hound Around and Come Along. The session also included a New Orleans styled Baby How Long (think Bobby Charles at his bluesiest)and the unissued Chuck Willis styled rockaballad Child Love (on the Charly lp) A later session in Nov 1957 featured another neat bluesy rocker Please Come Home and the now classic lament Born To Be A Loser (later recorded by Jerry Lee on the Southern Roots album produced by Huey Meaux in the mid 70s). This perfect swamp pop anthem featured all the heavyweights, Hank Garland, Chet Atkins, Grady Martin, Harold Bradley and Floyd Cramer and Glenn Douglas on keyboards, Frank Duke on drums and the Anita Kerr Singers (who for once add an effective backdrop to Loser). This gem received a vast amount of airplay in southern Dixie and became a jukebox fav. Like later follow ups, Radio Jukebox & TV and Our Love, Loser was a small regional hit but failed to break through to the all important cross country national charts. Several label tours ensued, venturing as far as the Midwest and the Eastern coast. His songs being staple bandstand requests in Southern Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.

Hearfelt ballads like I'm Alone, Our Love and What Must I Do ( with little sister getting a co-writer credit) were of the quality of the then popular Everly/Nelson style million sellers and sometimes sound as if the young Ronald Wycherly (aka Billy Fury) had hijacked his Mersey tug boat and crossed the big pond. The angst and self reflective mood of the songs hint at the inner turmoil that must have haunted this superbly talented musician. The frustrations in his career (where he could see that far less talented "singers" from bandstand were selling shed loads) lead to more disappointments and eventual despair with a return of erratic behaviour and health problems. Give Me My Freedom from July 1959 would have been a gold record in the hands of Mr growly Conway Twitty, but for the Jimster, zilchsville.

Radio, Jukebox & TV from August 58 similarly would be gold in the hands of say Chuck Willis or Ivory Joe Hunter , the song would fit in well on any compilation of their best, but the backbeat handclaps and the wailing sax failed to click once again, despite several hits like Splish Splash, Willie & Hand Jive, My True love, Western Movies etc getting a name check. Now I Know from July 1959 would have fitted Brenda lee like a Ronnie Self styled glove but you can guess the rest. The plaintive I Can't Love You from the same session flopped likewise. The touring and regional hits faded, Jimmy had lapsed back into the honky tonk circuit, Jimmy's addictive personality and booze not being an ideal combination. Drunken bad behaviour lead to legal problems and also a spell in a mental institution. Things began to look up when he married again in January 1959 to Lillie Mae Ugas, that damn confetti addiction striking again. The Wanda Jackson lookalike dark haired beauty brought some domestic stability and short lived happiness into the darkness that seemed to surround him.She was his one true love, abused by Jimmy but able to deal with it and loving him despite the problems, she was the mentor of many of his best songs.

April 60s chugging My Baby's Gone fared no better. His best Decca rocker is the great The Shape You left Me In from March 1959, an absolute corker of a song which I was finally able to track down in a vinyl haven in New Orleans in 2004. if there was natural justice in the wolrd, this would've sold a million and been covered by the returning king on the Elvis Is Back album, a real gem. Even Little Willie John couldn't have bettered the performance.

How frustrating was it for Jimmy to see say Fabian being a star when he couldn't carry the suggestion of a tune in a bucket. This came out on Brunswick in the Uk, as did the earlier South Of The Bordert/Trail Of The Lonesome Pine (not on the Charly lp)

When Liillie Mae briefly walked out on him he responded by containing his emotion in the song What A Price. This became one of seven songs recorded by Jimmy's hero the great Antoine Domino (four of Jimmy's originals can be found on the Edsel cd). What perhaps handicaps Jimmy's reputaion as a great songwriter is the fact that he frequently, like other starving songwriters (eg the young Willie Nelson), sold the rights to his latest song for a paltry sum like say $50, to put food on the family table. His reasoning being, heck I can write another song tomorrow. Many opportunistic entrepreneurs ( that is verbattim from the more erudite Johnnie Allen's notes, thieving twats would be my cultural assessment)have benefitted from his desperation. This explains why his name seldom appears on the writer's credits of any song he wrote for others or himself, hence the occasional appearance of his sister's name.

The Domino link lead to the Fatman recording latter Imperial period goodies like What A Price, Domino Twist, Stop The Clock and Rocking Bicycle (only Stop the Clock has Jimmy's name on it along with Fats, Maddux and Jessup. Roll over Russ Fratto and tell Alan Freed the news ;-)) What cements Donley's reputation amongst those in the know is the quality of songs he wrote and recorded for Meaux's Teardrop label. Just a shame Jimmy couldn't get that regional breakout that Meaux achieved with Barbara Lynn, Joe Barry, Sunny & Sunliners and Big Sambo. Meaux couldn't read music but had a great ear for a hit and luckily bumped into Jimmy at Cosimo Matassa's studio in NO and he promptly signed him up. A session was set up, produced by Leroy Martin and using Joe Barry's band the Vikings and possibly Mac Rebennack.

Jimmy was despondent over his beloved mam's death in March 1962, this coupled with his Decca failures caused him to fall out aggresively with Lillie Mae. her increasingly frequent departures lead to him penning several heartbreaking pleas for her to return once more. Meaux accuratelt described him as the " most lonesome guy on earth, reminding me of Hank Williams, Jimmy sang in a heartbreak key", mental torture equals songwriting genius. no wonder JLL always reckons he avoids songwriting as it can kill you.The Crazy Cajun cd is packed with 26 gems, 5 previously unissued. Please Mr Sandman is stunning, Loving Cajun Style likewise, even JLL has played this live and has jammed with it in the studio, Think It Over (not the Holly), Santa Don't Pass Me By (what a title and the performance is as good.)Just A Game, I'm To Blame, Forever Lillie Mae, the Domino songs esp Domino Twist with the ad lib "not the Chubby Checker twist, but the Domino twist" before breaking into giggles, all wonderful in the ears of this smitten kitten.

If only Jimmy had the lucky break of say a massive hit like Tommy McClain's cover of Sweet Dreams. The reality is just after the first anniversary of his mam's death Jimmy took his own life on March 20th 1963, the demons he'd battled since the army days finally won. Gone but not forgotten as Johnnie Allen says, his songs are still on the bayou jukeboxes, in the repertoire's of the dance bands and on the Donley memorial day radio playlists. That unique mix of blues, soul, country with a bluesy edge gets me everytime. No wonder they wanted to do a movie, I could see the young Ed Harris in the lead role or the young Robert Duvall

If like me, you dig Bobby Charles, Johnnie Allen, Cookie & the Cupcakes, Jiving Gene, Joe Barry, Rod Bernard etc than add the name Jimmy Donley to the list of guys to check out, oh, and send Bear family an email if you have the time -------

These swamp pop gems are evocative of lazy mint julep bayou visits and that heavy atmospheric Nawlins aroma. It was magical to hear Warren Storm's Lil Band Of Gold stroll through Please Mr Sandman at a great free State sponsored gig there back in April, I espied no less a legend than Allen Toussaint digging that one. Says it all really.

JIMMY DONLEY

BORN TO BE A LOSER

There's been a whole host of artists over the years whose critical acknowledgement has fare outshone there actual talent. Conversely, there's been plenty of acts who have received scant rewards for their undoubted ability. Jimmy Donley falls firmly in the second category. A talented performer and songwriter, he sits on the swamp pop side of rock 'n' roll, and his page here in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame is long overdue.

Born James Kenneth Donley on 17th August 1929, he was raised in Jonestown, Mississippi, close to Gulfport. His upbringing was a mixed affair very much in the Elvis mould. Whilst his mother Myrthe lavishing attention on him and encouraging his musical escapades, his father, Tag, played the Vernon Presley role, given him the "I ain't never seen a singer worth a damn" speech. At age 14 Tag forced Jimmy to leave school, not to become a truck driver but to work in the Gulfport docks, unloading the banana boats. It was hard physical work for a young teenager, but through it all Jimmy kept his music hopes alive.

By now an accomplished musician, he spent his spare time playing and forming a strong bond with Myrtle and his baby sister Myrna. His world turned upside down in 1948 when he was called into the Army. A spell abroad left him depressed, longing for the comfort of home and the loving arms of his mother. He turned to drugs for solace and was starting to show the early signs of schizophrenia, leading to an undesirable discharge in 1949. He went through a crazy period of marriages, beatings and divorces, with no less than four wives in four years. Just the thought of the money wasted on wedding rings must have been enough to depress him.

The early 50's saw him continue to play and write songs, always confident that he would get the lucky break that would change his families fortunes forever. That big break finally looked like it was here when Mississippi promoters Pee Wee Maddux, Frank "Yankee" Barhonevich and Marion "Prof" Carpenter brought him to the attention of Decca head honcho Owen Bradley. The first session was arranged for 26th February 1957 at Bradley's studio in Nashville. With a cracker band of the city's most celebrated musicians, the session was a blast.

The first Decca single was taken from the session with Come Along chosen as the a-side over Kickin' My Hound Around. Come Along was a mid tempo rockabilly not dissimilar to Brenda Lee's Bigelow ??. The b-side was even better, with Boots Randolph's sax driving the rocker along with the Anita Kerr Singers adding to the wonderful sound. Quite why this was never a hit I'm not sure, and why it is never issued on any compilations is even more baffling. The second session on 26th June that year spawned the follow-up single, Trail of the Lonesome Pine and South of the Border. Both songs showed an unusual blend of the Tennessee style rock 'n' roll and the swamp pop that was a part of Donley's soul. The third single featured a song from each of the preceding two sessions, with I Gotta Go and Baby How Long. The top side was a Fats Domino style stroller with plenty of high pitched wails of anxiety. The flip was mid tempo rocker again in the Fats mould, complete with the high pitched "la la's". It failed to make any noise but Decca were still confident that Donley was an artist to persevere with. It's intriguing to wonder what Donley himself must have been thinking at the time, especially on his bad days when steam of frustration must have been coming out of his ears.

On 21st November 1957 Donley was reacquainted at Owen Bradley's Studio with Boots Randolph and the Anita Kerr singers, and the wonderful Hank Garland on guitar. The single taken from the session shows Garland on fine form on the rockabilly number Please (Baby) Come Home. Sadly the b-side has become Donley's epitaph, Born To Be A Loser. Credit here must go to the versatility of the A-team who provide a backing that belies the Nashville setting, sounding for all the world like it was cut in Crowley, Loiusiana.

By now his life outside the studio was a mess, with spells of depression causing moments of violence which often resulted in periods in the slammer. A good place for writing songs but not great for someone with his mental problems who obviously needed a lot of TLC. How the fifth single wasn't a hit I'll never know. Radio, Jukebox and TV is a swamp pop/rock 'n' roll classic and the b-side, I'm Alone is a heartfelt ballad with pure lonesome vocals beautifully complimented the Anita Kerr and the gals. And if that was a good single, the follow-up was even better, one of the greatest double-sided non-hits of all time. The Shape You Left Me In is his best rocker, with it's full sound, it was as if everyone of the session pickers gave him everything they had because even they couldn't believe he wasn't get hit records. It's perfect rock 'n' roll for 1959, something akin to the sound of Jack Scott's best work. And if ever a single was called something that reflected the artists situation, this was it - What Must I Do. It was a brilliant ballad, beautifully sung. Between the two sides it was a fabulous 45, with a great uptempo side and a beautiful slow side.

The second single of 1959, the glorious ballad Now I Know again failed to chart and the voices in Jimmy's head must have been tormenting him as he saw Brenda Lee copy the song as Weep No More My Baby. The flip was a swamp popper with JD giving another stellar performance. They could take the boy to Nashville but they couldn't take the Cajun out of him. 1959 had been a curious year for Donley. In spite of two brilliant singles he'd still failed to garner any chart action, but his love life took a turn for the better when he married Lillie Mae Urgas on January 30th. She was better equipped than the previous wives to deal with Donley's violent fits, and suffered more than she should. She frequently left for short spells, giving JD great inspiration for his songwriting, with classics like Think It Over, Please Mr Sandman and Forever Lillie Mae resulting from these periods of despair.

In such a cut throat world as the music business it was no surprise when Decca finally ran out of patience. His last song for the label was a last ditch attempt to appeal to the soppy teens of the day who'd given up buying guitar led rock 'n' roll for string laden ballads. Despite this attempt, Our Love and My Baby's Gone again failed to register. The top side (cut on 14th April 1960) was a gentle ballad with the flip being the type of orchestrated rock 'n' roll Roy Orbison was starting to make popular. The change in style was an obvious move, but surely they'd have been better served by just changing his name to Bobby!

Disillusioned and impatient, Donley began selling his songs for a pittance. One he happened to keep was What A Price, which Fats Domino picked up in the summer of '61, and took into the top 30. Fats was to record another half dozen Donley songs, the royalties giving Jimmy one of the few things of stability in his life. Another of those, his mother died suddenly on March 15th 1962, a great loss which JD never really recovered from. Legend has it that he spent long hours at her unmarked grave, playing his guitar through the lonely night whilst drinking a bottle of whiskey.

A chance meeting at Cosimo Matassa's studio in New Orleans led to Donley signing up with producer Heuy Meaux, who remembered Donley as "the most lonesome guy on earth. Reminded me so much of the late Hank Williams. He wrote songs and sang them in a Heartbreak Key. At times he could write as many as eight songs a day. You could give him an idea and Boom! He had you a song that could be recorded in any style". Meaux issued no fewer than 9 Donley singles over the next few years on his Tear Drop label which also saw released by Rod Bernard and Gene Summers. Non of the singles made the charts but they were again excellent songs, mostly in the swamp pop style that Donley was able to capture better than anyone.

A year and five days after the death of his mother, Jimmy Donley took his own life, an almost welcome release for a troubled but brilliant man. Forty years on, the name lives on through the jukeboxes of south east Texas and Louisiana. The Decca stuff was issued on a fabulous Charley vinyl album in 1987 but for some inexplicable reason has yet to see the light of day on CD. The Tear Drop sides were issued on an Edsel/Crazy Cajun CD in 1999. Fan and fellow swamp pop legend Johnnie Allan wrote a book about Donley's life with Dr Bernice Webb and for years there has been the rumour that Hollywood is going to film a biopic.

Also acquired the Sekonic L-28c lately , a good clean meter that reads well and is complete with all the factory bits and bobs , must be one of the first as the instructions are type writen from Kanematsu New York Inc. The back page includes a coupon for supply of the instruction book when it is printed. Mmmmm I wonder if they would still honour that coupon.

Choice between Gold & Selver i know your love is hard

If it hard to deside between these two

it's just two colors i choice

New in 2004 to Holyhead fire fire station

Later served at Aberdyfi were it replaced PN04 WKB that was rolled in June 2008 while on a shout and writen off as a result.

PO54 FJU was also rolled on April 13th 2012 hence why this is fitted with the newer style LED gantry lighting and different rear blue lighting to all the other volvo FL's made by saxon in the fleet.

This round tower is cosied up to an 18th century cruciform shaped church ruin, though some 16th C mullioned windows are found within. First writen mention of the tower has the cap in ruins. The current fair attempt at restoration was carried out in 1880 by the OPW. It has a rounded top though, instead of a decidedly pointy traditional cap. This, its wide drum, and less than average height, makes this round tower look rather squat.

Many things have been said and writen about those two nebulas. Many astrophotographers have taken the challenge the last years to capture the faint squid nebula that is hidden in the flying bat nebula and was ignored until 2011, when another amateur astrophotographer Nicolas Outters proved once and for all its existence. I spent many days on this target. I started in June and finished in October, trying to capture as many photos as I could to really make the details from the squid nebula visible. 18 nights I turned my telescope towards the constellation Cepheus and gathered precious photons for this project. The processing was also very challenging and I went throught a very difficult learning process, trying to improve my processing skills and master the difficulties this target provided. A very big thanks to fellow astrophotographer Yannick Akar for the inspiration to capture this target, but also for his precious guidance throught the processing. I hope you enjoy it!
