I am just starting to go through the 25K of images I shot during a month long tour of Scandanavia and parts of Europe with my Uncle and Aunt. I put the entire lot of images aside, purposefully, so that I could see them again with anticipation rather than hurry. The joy of discovery is certainly present and reliving the trip has a lure that I hadn't anticipated! Obviously more to come...!

I was lucky enough to be invited to the concert and double lucky to be given a Photo Pass and spend the entire show shooting at the front, face to face. I love this band and encourage you to check them out! Vök is a dream-pop/indie-electronica band formed in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 2013 and this is Margrét Rán (vocalist).
This was my first time getting to shoot a show under such conditions and it was a load of fun. Plenty of fun shots came from the effort and also realized how difficult it can be if your settings are not working. It took me a little bit to get the feel for it, but eventually I settled into it and the experience of it proved invaluable for the next time.

I love the way an ordinary scene can leave an impression on me in an unusual fashion and weigh heavy in my mind for days after. Swirling around, kicking up dust and infecting the rest of my shooting until I let it go, delete it or post it....like this one.

The Summer Palace was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 as the "Summer Palace, an Imperial Garden in Beijing". UNESCO notes, "The Summer Palace in Beijing - first built in 1750, largely destroyed in the war of 1860 and restored on its original foundations in 1886 - is a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value."
Calligraphers come to the Summer Palace in the mornings to write on the walkways with large brushes dipped in water. The works disappear as they dry.

"Crying out for the last time
And there's no turning back now that you've opened up to your mind
What guides your vision
What holds the balance
Don't think that I can't see you shake and tremble
Well I know your nervous this world is scary
You have to let go all the madness you carry...
There is no turning back now
Everything you've ever wanted"

i realized this does kinda look like Brook Shadens stuff. and then i also realized that in alot of her pics she writes on her wrists so now i feel like total copycat... SORRY BROOKE! I didn't mean for it to look like that :( this is my payback for yesterdays "utter crap". I personally think its better... it feels good to take it out on a picture in photoshop. Oh, the monsters i can be in that place :)

I think about hands too much probably. They interest me, perhaps to the point where I can imagine the stories they may tell, given a voice. I think about the work they have endured, the love they have held, the life they have led, the help they have offered. I think about the deeds that have been done under cover of night and the ones that go unnoticed by the most watchful of us. I think about the secrets that they keep and the scars that mark time passing. Too much to consider, but hands captivate me, especially when they have aged and have the callouses of life.

“...he was not such a special person. He loved to read very much, and also to write. He was a poet, and he exhibited me many of his poems. I remember many of them. They were silly, you could say, and about love. He was always in his room writing those things, and never with people.
I used to tell him, What good is all that love doing on paper? I said, Let love write on you for a little.
But he was so stubborn. Or perhaps he was only timid.”

Sunlight writing on water:
This is another one of the effects you can get if you use the "special method" described below.*
The brightest streaks document
--during the 1/20s the shutter was open--
the continuously changing positions of the strongest reflections of sunlight from the water surface.
For a different example using this "special method," see my just previous post:
www.flickr.com/photos/49304401@N00/50176021902/in/datepos...
BTW - the green cast is due to moss partly covering both these stones and the shallow river bed.
* Special Method -
The key is to shoot an auto-focused, telephoto closeup of brightly-lit, turbulent water at ca. 1/20s or 1/30s. You shoot in shutter-priority mode, with ISO limited to ca. 200. This forces a DSLR (or equivalent) to use an f/stop of ca. f/20+ (f/36 here) so that everything is more or less in focus. You shoot hand-held with anti-shake turned on, and hope to thus avoid blur caused by hand-holding at a low shutter speed.
Execution: You zoom to compose and then immediately, but gently. click the shutter. If you wait too long, you will begin to shake the camera and get some blur. Sometimes you get get lucky and there is no blur. It is best to make a few shots and pick the sharpest ones later.
Location: River Wiese, near Maulburg, Lörrach District, Baden-Württemberg DE.
In my album: Dan's Water World.

I kind of wish our eyes had met when I passed you on a street or when you sat on the bench next to me. Then I would know you would know we had been known each other for a long time. then you could just write on my palm and I could borrow your jacket when it's cold and maybe we could tiptoe along the road while we were looking at each other and laughed at the world.
